Twitter reacts to Chris Weidman’s leg break against Uriah Hall at UFC 261

[autotag]Uriah Hall[/autotag] exacted revenge on [autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] on Saturday in their UFC 261 rematch – but not how he want.

After losing the first fight in September 2010, Hall (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) came out on the right end of the rematch. However, it came after Weidman (15-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) snapped his leg in horrific fashion just 17 seconds into the middleweight bout, which aired on the pay-per-view main card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

Check below for the top Twitter reactions to Weidman’s leg break against Hall at UFC 261.

UFC 261: Chris Weidman snaps leg throwing kick vs. Uriah Hall – same way he beat Anderson Silva

In perhaps the most horrifically ironic result in MMA history, Chris Weidman snapped his leg throwing a kick against Uriah Hall.

In perhaps the most horrifically ironic result in MMA history, [autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] snapped his leg throwing a kick against [autotag]Uriah Hall[/autotag] – the same way he beat [autotag]Anderson Silva[/autotag] nearly eight years ago.

The first kick Weidman (15-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) threw, with his right leg, Hall (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) lifted his left leg to check it. When he did, Weidman’s lower right leg folded like it was made of rubber. Weidman then stepped on the leg and went down. The fight was stopped immediately just 17 seconds in.

In December 2013, in his first defense of the UFC middleweight title against Silva, whom he beat for the belt earlier that year, Weidman checked a Silva kick and snapped Silva’s leg. The only real difference between the Silva kick that Weidman checked, and the Weidman kick that Hall checked more than seven years later was left leg vs. right leg.

The injury kept Silva out for more than a year and is known as one of the most gruesome injuries in the sport’s history.

Weidman’s left leg was put into a compression boot and he was taken from the cage on a stretcher. During replays shown in the arena, the reported 15,000 fans in attendance let out seemingly unanimous groans. The event was the UFC’s first in front of fans since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Chris Weidman,” Hall told Joe Rogan after the fight. “He’s truly one of the best. It is a crazy story that he was the first man I fought that defeated me, that introduced me to fear. … I wanted to put on a great performance. I feel so bad for him. I hope he’s OK. I wish the family well. It’s the sucky part of this sport. … I hope he recovers.”

UFC 261 took place Saturday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The event was the UFC’s first in front of fans since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

UFC 261 results: Anthony Smith kick kills Jimmy Crute’s leg, fight stopped between rounds

Watch and listen: Jimmy Crute’s rubber leg gets crowd audibly cringing at UFC 261.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] won at UFC 261, but perhaps not in the way he had expected.

Saturday, Smith (35-16 MMA, 10-6 UFC) defeated [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] via TKO (doctor stoppage) in between the first and second rounds. The light heavyweight bout opened up the UFC 261 main card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

In the opening round, Crute (12-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) absorbed a number of outside leg kicks that quickly took their toll. Midway through Round 1, Smith landed a hard kick that knocked Crute down. With a blown tire and in survival mode, Crute shot for a takedown – and got it. He held Smith down for the rest of the round.

When the end-of-round horn sounded, Crute gingerly rose to his feet. While strolling back to his stool, it became apparent Crute had been rendered unable to walk, at least not without grotesquely rolling his ankle, to the oohs and aahs of the 15,000 in attendance.

After a pep talk from his coaches, Crute prepared to go back out there for Round 2. However, upon a doctor examination, Crute rolled his ankle again. The cageside physician swiftly waived off the fight, much to the displeasure of Crute, who punched the ring stanchion and crashed to the mat.

With the win, Smith moves to 3-2 since his unsuccessful title challenge against Jon Jones at UFC 235 in March 2019 and has now won two fights in a row. Smith’s other wins since his title shot loss include Alexander Gustafsson and Devin Clark.

As for Crute, his two-fight winning streak is snapped with the loss. His only other career loss came in September 2019 at UFC Fight Night 158 when he lost by submission to Misha Cirkunov.

UFC 261 results: Randy Brown taps Alex Oliveira with one-armed rear-naked choke

UFC welterweight Randy Brown needed just one arm to submit Alex Oliveira with a rear-naked choke at UFC 261.

[autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] is a serious submission threat.

He needed just one arm to submit [autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] at UFC 261. Brown (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) tapped Oliveira (22-10-1 MMA, 11-8 UFC) with a one-armed rear-naked choke at the 2:40 mark of Round 1.

The welterweight bout closed out the UFC 261 preliminary card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It aired on ESPN following early prelims on ESPN+ and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.

It was a short, but dramatic bout.

Brown seemed to be in trouble early when Oliveira landed significant leg kicks that were stunning him. But not long after, Brown answered back with a right hand that wobbled Oliveira.

From there, the 30-year-old pounced on the Brazilian, took his back, and submitted Oliveira with a rear-naked choke using just one arm. Brown ended up locking the rear-naked choke with both arms, but Oliveira was tapping well before the choke was locked.

Brown bounced back from a loss to Vicente Luque in August 2020. He’s now 3-1 in his past four bouts. Oliveira fell to 2-5 in his past seven trips to the octagon. He’s on a two-fight skid, including a loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov, also by submission, this past October.

UFC 261 video: Danaa Batgerel floors Kevin Natividad with perfect check left hook

Watch UFC bantamweight Danaa Batgerel knock out Kevin Natividad with a perfectly timed left-hook counter at UFC 261.

[autotag]Danaa Batgerel[/autotag] sure has a mean left hook.

The 31-year-old bantamweight picked up another UFC win, dispatching Kevin Natividad with a left hook at Saturday’s UFC 261 in Jacksonville, Fla. Batgerel (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) stopped Natividad at the 50 seconds into Round 1. Their bantamweight clash was part of the UFC 261 preliminary card.

Batgerel dropped Natividad with a check left hook after Natividad rushed him early. Batgerel rushed in with ground-and-pound after sending Natividad to the canvas, but almost immediately he was stopped by the referee, who waved off the fight.

This is Batgerel’s second UFC win. Both victories have come by first-round KO using a left hook. The Jackson Wink MMA product is 5-1 in his last six outings.
