Deiveson Figueiredo proud of historic UFC 256 title bout, warns ‘masked clown’ Henry Cejudo

Deiveson Figueiredo thinks a matchup with Henry Cejudo could be in his future if he successfully defends his flyweight title at UFC 256.

[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] thinks a matchup with [autotag]Henry Cejudo[/autotag] could be in his future if he successfully defends his flyweight title in the UFC 256 main event.

Figueiredo (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) is set to put his title on the line for the second time in 21 days when he meets Brandon Moreno (18-5-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC) in Saturday’s headliner, which takes place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

After submitting Alex Perez in the first round at UFC 255 on Nov. 21, Figueiredo agreed to get right back in the octagon for the clash with Moreno. The former titleholder, Cejudo (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), has poked fun at the sidelines, saying Figueiredo is merely “babysitting” the strap for him.

That irked Figueiredo, who issued a response.

“Cejudo’s a masked clown,” Figueiredo told reporters, including MMA Junkie, through an interpreter during UFC 256 virtual media day on Thursday. “I can’t wait for him to step in front of me so I can knock that mask off his face.”

While it remains to be seen if a clash with Cejudo is in his future, the present is all about his encounter with Moreno, and trying to make history in the process.

Figueiredo stayed in Las Vegas after his win over Perez, and said he’s maintained his focus and discipline in the short stretch between fights. He said he currently weighs about 132 pounds, and has used his time to come up with a “very strategic” game plan for Moreno.

It hasn’t been difficult at all for Figueiredo find motivation for this fight, he said, especially because Moreno has added fuel to the fire.

“Brandon’s a guy that asked to fight me since the (Joseph) Benavidez fight,” Figueiredo said. “That’s something that irritated and bothered me a little bit, so if he’s asking to fight me then we’ll get in the octagon and he can fight with me.”

The current record for fastest turnaround between successful UFC title defenses currently stands at 56 days, and is shared by Matt Hughes and Ronda Rousey. There’s a chance for Figueiredo to blow that mark out of the water.

If Figueiredo does pull off the victory, he would have a significant case for the 2020 “Fighter of the Year,” having finished Benavidez twice before kicking off his title reign in legendary fashion.

It’s a moment in time that makes Figueiredo grateful, he said, but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to stop pushing to expand his legacy.

“To win again and take two belts home to Brazil and relax with my family – thinking about that makes me feel very proud of myself,” Figueiredo said. “I want to really dominate my division, I want to make history. But I’m fully open to having a super fight at 135, and I hope this happens soon.”

UFC 256 ‘Embedded,’ No. 3: Brandon Moreno brings joy to fight week

Go behind the scenes with the third episode of “Embedded” leading up to UFC 256 headlined by a flyweight title fight.

The UFC returns Saturday night with its final pay-per-view of the year, UFC 256, which features a quick turnaround flyweight title fight as top billing.

UFC 256 takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

In the main event, [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] will defend his 125-pound championship against [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] just 21 days since both men last fought. And in the co-main event, [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] looks to get back to his winning ways when he meets rising contender [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] in a pivotal lightweight clash.

The third episode of “Embedded” follows some of the big names. Here’s the UFC’s description from YouTube:

Junior Dos Santos arrives on a late-night flight. Champion Deiveson Figueiredo hits the sauna; opponent Brandon Moreno sings through training and PT. Jacare Souza starts his quarantine. Tony Ferguson checks in with his not-coach.

In Ciryl Gane, Junior Dos Santos sees his younger self and relishes the opportunity to fight the “next big name” at heavyweight.

In [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag], [autotag]Junior Dos Santos[/autotag] sees his younger self.

Dos Santos (21-8 MMA, 15-7 UFC), who once started out his career as an undefeated prospect, will face Gane on Saturday at UFC 256, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The former UFC heavyweight champion knows Gane (6-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is being dubbed as the division’s next star, a position he can certainly relate to.

“He’s a different type of heavyweight,” Dos Santos told MMA Junkie. “He’s like me. He moves very well. He’s very light for his weight. He deals very well with his own size, so that’s why I’m saying it’s gonna be a very interesting fight, because this guy is dangerous. He already submitted some people showing some ground game, as well, so no doubt this fight will be very interesting for the fans, and I’m happy to be there fighting against someone that everybody is considering the next big name in the heavyweight division.”

Though Dos Santos is currently enduring the roughest stretch of his career having lost his past three in a row, he still has championship aspirations. He thinks derailing Gane’s hype train is going to prove that he has more to give and that he’s not done yet.

“I don’t underestimate my opponents,” Dos Santos said. “Especially right now, I can see a lot of potential in this guy to even become the champion one day. There’s a reason why everybody is talking about him, and that’s why it’s so important for me to go there and show a little bit more of myself as a fighter because once you start having negative results, people stop believing in you.

“I know I can avoid this type of feeling in myself, but I want people to believe me, and I want to give them a great victory on Saturday night so that they can believe in me again, and believe that I will become the champion at some point again.”

Tony Ferguson warns he could skip UFC 256 if Charles Oliveira misses weight

Tony Ferguson isn’t looking to hear any excuses from Charles Oliveira after he steps on the scale.

[autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] isn’t interested in competing Saturday unless it’s on an even playing field.

Ferguson (25-4 MMA, 15-2 UFC), who faces [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] in the co-main event of UFC 256, will look to rebound after having his 12-fight winning streak snapped at the hands of Justin Gaethje this past May.

Although Oliveira (29-8 MMA, 17-8 UFC) never has missed weight at 155 pounds, he was heavy on numerous occasions at featherweight, which prompted his move up a weight class.

Since Oliveira has taken this fight on relatively short notice, Ferguson has an inkling that the Brazilian could miss weight. And if he’s too far off the mark, Ferguson says he won’t accept the fight under those cirucmstances.
