Jaguars have talked to UF, UNF about relocating games for renovation

The Jaguars are, at the very least, preparing contingency plans in the case that they can’t use TIAA Bank Field during renovations.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have contacted the University of Florida and the University of North Florida to discuss the possibility of games being relocated from TIAA Bank Field during future stadium renovations, the schools each confirmed to the Florida Times-Union.

On Wednesday, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said in a radio interview that a two-year renovation of the Jaguars’ home stadium may happen during the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and that “the team will have to play somewhere else” during the project.

While the veracity of those claims by Curry have been called into question — especially when the Jaguars don’t even have a renovation proposal yet — the Times-Union’s report shows that the team is, at the very least, preparing contingency plans.

“The University of North Florida has had initial contact from the Jaguars, and we understand the team is exploring many options. No decisions from any side have been made, and we look forward to future discussions,” a UNF spokesperson told the Times-Union in a statement.

Similarly, Florida Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin said that the Jaguars “expressed interest in having future conversations about where they would play games during the renovation.”

UNF does not have a football team, but the school’s soccer teams and track and field teams play at Hodges Stadium, a 9,400-seat facility in Jacksonville.

The Gators’ Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is significantly larger with a capacity of 88,548. However, “The Swamp” in Gainesville, Fla. is a more than 70-mile drive from TIAA Bank Field.

On Thursday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer’s office told Spectrum News 13 that the city’s venues staff hasn’t had any conversations with the Jaguars about the possibility of using Camping World Stadium.

Players currently slated to attend the Bucs’ local pre-draft workout on Thursday

The workout will consist of players from state schools and players who attended high school in the Tampa Bay area.

It’s draft month, and that means that NFL teams can hold their local pre-draft workouts.

The workouts host players from both state schools and those who went to high school in the team’s local area. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that means that the team will host players from the likes of UF, FSU, USF and UCF while also working out players from out-of-state colleges who went to high school in the Tampa Bay area. The workout will allow the team to get an extra look at some players it may be interested in as the draft draws nearer.

Here is the full list of players slated to attend the workout thus far, as reported by FOX Sports’ Greg Auman:

Tim Tebow confirms documentary on infamous 2008 Florida team is in the works

Former Gators QB Tim Tebow talks about an upcoming documentary on the 2008 Florida Gators.

One of the most famous, or infamous, depending on how you look at it, college football teams in the history of the sport is getting its close up.

After months of speculation, Florida Gator legend Tim Tebow confirmed a documentary is in the works for the 2008 Florida national title team to Mackenzie Salmon on Sports Seriously.

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about it yet,” said a reluctant Tebow, trying to not spoil any of the details. “But I want to get a chance to actually see it.”

Of course, the 08’ Gators are remembered for going 13-1 and defeating the Oklahoma Sooners in the national championship game that season. But today, it’s mostly known as the Gators team that had the likes of Aaron Hernandez, Riley Cooper and Percy Harvin on the roster.

Head coach Urban Meyer and Tebow are expected to be key figures interviewed in the documentary. The Gator legend didn’t want to give away too much but admitted it was fun to look back at this legendary season in college football.

“It was fun having the chance to be able to film it and I will tell you what those were some really fun years. It’s some of the most special times of my life and to be able to look back at it with some of my teammates will be really fun.”

What are Florida’s odds at making the College Football Playoff?

College Football Playoff picture remains unclear after Week 12 with the Florida Gators sitting at No. 10 in the nation leading up to Alabama

[jwplayer lwWY8EG1]

As the final weeks of the regular season wind down, what seemed elusive for so long is nearly in grasp for the Gators. Florida is 6-1, and with three games left in the season (for now), it should be favored in every matchup until the SEC Championship Game. From there, it can start to think about the College Football Playoff.

Get to the conference title game with no more blemishes, and the formula is pretty simple: win and you’re in, lose and you go home (or to a New Year’s Six Bowl, more precisely).

At this moment in time, what exactly are the odds of that happening? Well, if you’re a Gators fan, it’s not exactly what you want to see.

According to ESPN, UF has just a 12.2% chance of making the CFP. Those odds are the 10th best odds in the nation, and when you see that the teams ahead of Florida include USC, Cincinnati, BYU and Northwestern, it may be hard to believe.

But the Gators’ chances at making the CFP come down almost entirely to the likely matchup with Alabama. And right now, their odds of earning that one aren’t great.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, Florida’s chances at winning the SEC aren’t much better than its chances at making the playoff, as the odds are just 16.2 percent.

UF has one of the nation’s elite offenses, but it’s clear that at the moment, the analytics don’t think the Gators are prepared to slow down the Alabama attack.

Here’s the full list of playoff odds.

TEAM (RECORD) MAKE PLAYOFF WIN TITLE
Alabama (7-0) 94.2% 54.2%
Ohio State (4-0) 71.1% 18.7%
Notre Dame (8-0) 59.3% 7.6%
Cincinnati (8-0) 35.3% 2.3%
Clemson (7-1) 33.5% 8.2%
Oregon (3-0) 26.9% 1.9%
USC (3-0) 14.8% 0.8%
BYU (9-0) 14.1% 0.8%
Northwestern (5-0) 13.9% 0.8%
Florida (6-1) 12.2% 1.9%
Texas A&M (5-1) 11.6% 0.8%
Wisconsin (2-1) 9.2% 1.9%
Miami (7-1) 1.3% <.1%
Oklahoma (6-2) 0.8% 0.1%
Indiana (4-1) 0.7% <.1%
Washington (2-0) 0.7% <.1%
Georgia (5-2) 0.2% <.1%
Texas (5-2) 0.1% <.1%

Only ‘Bama is better than the Gators in ESPN’s SEC power rankings for Week 12

ESPN’s latest football conference power rankings for the SEC has the Florida Gators second behind Alabama Crimson Tide for the league lead.

[jwplayer moe4b2fM]

Florida’s 38-17 victory didn’t do much to instill confidence in the fanbase that the team is capable of beating Alabama, but it did keep the Gators on track to win the SEC East.

Though Texas A&M is among the stronger teams in the country, it is unlikely to usurp the Crimson Tide in the West. As a result, the SEC is essentially a duopoly between UF and UA. Assuming both teams win out before the conference championship, a Florida win could land them both in the College Football Playoff, while a ‘Bama win would likely eliminate the Gators from contention.

This balance of power is reflected in ESPN’s latest SEC power rankings, as Florida ranks second in the league behind the Crimson Tide. It’s followed by the Aggies at No. 3 and Georgia, who UF beat 44-28, at No. 4.

Here’s the full power ranking for this week.

1. Alabama
2. Florida
3. Texas A&M
4. Georgia
5. Auburn
6. Missouri
7. LSU
8. Arkansas
9. Ole Miss
10. Kentucky
11. Tennessee
12. Mississippi State
13. South Carolina
14. Vanderbilt

Gators News: College Football Playoff announcement tonight

Florida Gators football is in the mix for a spot in the College Football Playoff picture when it is announced; women’s basketball tips off.

[jwplayer moe4b2fM]

The din of the past weekend dims to a dull roar on this Tuesday as both college football’s Week 12 and the National Football League’s Week 11 come to an official close, leaving football fans a few days until their next gridiron fix.

In the meantime, the first official College Football Playoff rankings will be released tonight by the CFP selection committee, with the Florida Gators expected to be in the mix. Several questions loom as the committee sets the tone for the rest of the regular season and those questions are addressed by USA TODAY Sports.

As far as other Gators sports, women’s basketball tip off their season tomorrow against Grambling State University in the O’Connell Center. The first game of the season starts at 1 p.m. EST.

Here is the rest of the news from around the Gator Nation.

SI’s college football rankings not too fond of Florida Gators

Florida Gators football team found itself outside of the top-5 in SI’s college football rankings for Week 12 after a shaky win over Vandy.

[jwplayer moe4b2fM]

The Florida Gators are among the top 10 of every college football poll and rankings after Week 12 while sporting a 6-1 record over the course of its Southeastern Conference-only schedule this season.

Despite a loss to the Texas A&M Aggies in their third week of action, UF has managed to maintain its place in the upper echelon of collegiate football with the help of a statement win over its fiercest rival the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 7. Subsequently, a plurality of the press still sees Florida as a top-five team, though there are plenty of outliers out there.

Sports Illustrated has vacillated on the Gators this year and their latest assessment represents one of the lower points in the ebb and flow. The latest college football rankings from the publication have Florida at No. 8 in the nation — much lower than most other outlets currently.

Here is how SI’s columnist Pat Forde broke down UF’s ranking for Week 12.

8. Florida

Last game: Beat Vanderbilt, 38-17
Next game: Kentucky Saturday

The Gators haven’t led any of their past three games after one quarter, but they’ve led by a bunch at the end. Florida has scored 38 or more points every game, maintaining Kyle Trask’s stature as a top Heisman Trophy candidate. The path to Atlanta and an SEC championship game against Alabama remains fairly smooth and straightforward.

Florida, along with the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and the Aggies — who sit just one spot above the Gators — represent the SEC in the top 10 of Forde’s rankings.
