UCLA won the first meeting between these programs 68-54 at home as a 12-point favorite on Jan. 14.

The Bruins enter off a 78-71 victory at Utah Thursday. UCLA will look to grow its lead atop the Pac-12 Conference in Colorado following Arizona’s last-second loss to Arizona State Saturday.

Colorado has a tall task to hand UCLA its first loss outside of the Quad 1 in the NET rankings. The Bruins rank 7th in the nation with 59.8 points allowed per game and the Buffaloes score just 70.4 per game (t-205th). The Bruins beat Colorado by 14 points in the previous meeting this season and are coming off a 7-point win at Utah on Thursday.

Colorado is coming off an 84-65 home loss to USC as it looks to rebound and salvage a mediocre season.

The No. 3 Bruins are not going to take this game lightly. Which is not good for the Buffaloes. UCLA will control the pace and make this a comfortable margin of victory.

The Bruins failed to cover the 7.5-point spread Thursday, but this time they get it done.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 134.5 (-110)

UCLA has gone Under in 5 straight games against a team with a winning record, and Colorado has gone Under in 5 straight home games against teams with a road winning percentage over .600.

This game has all the hallmarks of an Under play.

UCLA will hold down a Colorado squad that averages just 70.4 points. UCLA’s offense is not high-powered (74.2 points per game) while the Buffaloes’ defense allows a respectable 66.7 (84th). The scoring struggle will be real for both squads and an Over is not likely.

UCLA is on the road for a second straight game after it defeated the Utah Utes 63-58 Thursday. The Bruins have been solid on defense in going 7-1 over their last eight games and holding opposing squads to a 39.3% mark from the floor. The second of those eight games was a 73-61 home win over Colorado.

The Buffaloes are coming off a hard-fought 61-58 home loss to USC Thursday. Colorado led that game for a good chunk of the second half as was up by 2 with under four minutes remaining. CU was in the game on its 3-point shooting (7-for-15); the Buffs shot 25.0% on their 2-point attempts.

UCLA’s backcourt is banged up a bit, and it’s playing the back half of a road trip that started in Salt Lake City Thursday. The Bruins have the edge everywhere it counts — except for the venue, and that’s a key checkmark in Colorado’s favor.

BET the BUFFALOES (+140) as a solid value play at this price point.

Against the spread

Colorado was the beneficiary of a 13.5-point spread last month that it covered and it’s won two in a row ATS versus UCLA — and six of the last nine meetings.

Colorado taking on Pac-12 teams traveling on short rest has been a solid angle in the past. This Buffs team is trending the right way, especially at the defensive end. BACK THE BUFFALOES +3.5 (-112) on a small-to-moderate lean.

A mid-130s total looks solid. PASS.

UCLA at Colorado: Three things to know

  1. This is year three of the Chip Kelly-experience for UCLA and the first two seasons haven’t been as successful as the Bruins faithful hoped they would be. UCLA is just 7-17 since Kelly took over the head coaching position and it has the worst against the spread record in the PAC-12 in his tenure (9-13-2 ATS).
  2. First-year Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell was an assistant for the Miami Dolphins in 2019 and his only head coaching experience is for UCLA from 2003-07. Dorrell had a 35-27 overall record and was 1-3 in bowl games.
  3. UCLA is 1-1 straight up and 1-1 ATS vs. Colorado in Kelly’s first two seasons as the helm. The Bruins took down the Buffaloes last year 31-14 as QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 21 of 28 passes for 226 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Money line (ML)

The only way you can start a UCLA-Colorado handicap is with your confidence-level on Bruins coach Kelly. Personally, I thought Kelly did a good job with the Philadelphia Eagles, while the San Francisco 49ers situation wasn’t a fit and his achievements running the Oregon Ducks from 2009-12 speaks for themselves. So, on a 0-10 scale, I’ll say my confidence in Chip Kelly having a bowl-eligible 2020 is at a 7.5.

Colorado (+170) coach Dorrell has a 2005 Pac-12 Coach of the Year trophy under his belt but his Buffaloes team has just the 115th-graded return in production, according to ESPN. All my Dorrell-knowledge is a Wikipedia briefing so he’s an unknown commodity as far as I’m concerned.

UCLA’s Thompson-Robinson is in his third season as a starting QB in Kelly’s offense and I think we’ll get the best iteration of a Bruins offense that’s been disappointing since Kelly took over. Even though UCLA lost its 2019 leading rusher to the NFL (RB Joshua Kelley), the Bruins still return ESPN’s 33rd-most offensive production.

I like the Bruins (-200) to win but hate them at this price. PASS ON THE MONEY LINE.

Against the spread (ATS)

I “LEAN” UCLA -6 (-110) because I refuse to believe Kelly’s team can’t turn the corner. This Colorado defense was bad last season and doesn’t have much hope for 2020. The Buffaloes defense is ranked 70th in return of production, and last season they were 114th in yards per play. UCLA can have success against the Colorado defense in its first game under Dorrell.

Over/Under (O/U)

UCLA’s defense was even worse and returns less production than Colorado’s in 2019. The Bruins were ranked 125th in opponent’s yards per play and 116th in points per game. Plus, they are ranked 96th by ESPN in defensive return of production. GIMME OVER 56.5 (-110) in a UCLA-Colorado shootout.
