UCLA Bruins Men’s Soccer preseason 3rd in Big Ten

The soccer team should do well this year.

The UCLA Bruins men’s soccer team is underway for the 2024 season. The Big Ten preseason coaches poll was released earlier this week, and the Bruins come into the season ranked third.

Leading off the Big Ten Men’s soccer preseason poll was the Indiana Hoosiers. They were unanimous to win the conference. Penn State is listed second, while Washington and Michigan State round out the Top 5.

The Bruins will start their Big Ten season on September 13th in Evanston Illinois. Northwestern will host the Bruins on a Friday night. After that, the Bruins will head to Madison Wisconsin and take on the Badgers on September 16th. The first home match for the Bruins will take place on September 21st against Michigan.

UCLA also got three players named on the watch list. Jose Contell, Pablo Greenlee, and Andre Ochoa.

Contell is in his first season for the Bruins. He was named to the All-Far West Region second team last season. Greenlee is also in his fifth season. He has 14 starts in 40 games in his UCLA career.

Andre Ochoa is starting his third season as a key member of the UCLA soccer team. He started all 18 games last season, and in his career at UCLA he has 7 goals and 11 assists

Bridgette Marin-Valencia named UCLA Student Athlete of the Week

Bridgette Marin-Valencia was named the UCLA Athletics Student Athlete of the Week. The star Bruins soccer player scored two goals last week, and dishing out an assist.

The Bruins soccer team got off to a quick start with back-to-back wins over Long Beach State and UC Riverside. The 5’5 junior out of San Francisco came to the Bruins from Immaculate Conception Academy. Last season she played in 17 games and made 3 starts. She scored two goals, including a game-winner against CSUN.

Bridgette Marin-Valencia is also part of the Mexican 2022 FIFA Under 20 World Cup team as well. She helped the team to a bronze medal at the 2022 Sun Ladies Cup.

Thursday night the Bruins are on the road at Cal Poly before they come back home on Sunday to take on Santa Clara at home. The Bruins will remain at home and take on Brigham Young on August 28th. The first Big Ten match for the Bruins will come in Eugene Oregon on September 14th against the Ducks.

UCLA Bruins Men’s soccer wins season opener

The UCLA Bruins men’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win on Thursday night over LMU. The Bruins got a pair of goals from graduate transfer Edrey Caceres in the match.

It was a nice night for the Bruins as a trio of players played their first college match. Sveinn Hauksson, Shakir Nixon, and Tamir Ratoviz have now played in a college soccer match. Five others got their first career match with the Bruins under their belt.

Goaltender Sam Joseph recorded a clean sheet. It was the third of his career. The Bruins defense helped him out big time, as they allowed just two shows on the net in the final 30 minutes. UCLA finished with 14 shots, while the Lions had 7.

The next match for the Bruins will come on Sunday. The Bruins are home for their next four. They will host James Madison on August 25th. After that, they have home matches against Portland on August 30th, Cal State Fullerton on September 5th and Denver comes to town on September 9th.

The Big Ten slate then starts on September 13th, as the Bruins head to Northwestern and Wisconsin.
