2022 U.S. Open best value prop bets for 3 golfers

Three golfers to profit on at the 2022 U.S. Open, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The 122nd U.S Open tees off Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Below, we tab the best value prop bets on a trio of golfers among the 2022 U.S. Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Golfweek’s No. 2 overall golfer Jon Rahm tries to defends his 2021 U.S. Open title against a 156-player field featuring Golfweek’s top-ranked golfer, and 2022 PGA Championship winner, Justin Thomas and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

This will be The Country Club’s 4th time hosting the U.S. Open, and 1st since 1988. The course is playing at 7,264 yards, par 70, and cuts will be made after 36 holes with the top 60 players playing for a prize pool of $12.5 million ($2.25 million to the winner).

Shane Lowry

Lowry is 1st on my custom model and 2nd on my mixed model (courtesy of FantasyNational.com), behind the 2 favorites: Rory McIlroy (+1000) and Justin Thomas (+1200).

According to my numbers, Lowry ranks in the top-10 of this field in greens in regulation (GIRs) gained, good drives, Par 4 efficiency: 450-500 and bogeys avoided (per Fantasy National). The Par 4 efficiency stat was pulled because 7 Par 4 holes at The Country Club play within 450-500 yards.

All Lowry has done this calendar year is finished 10th or better at the Honda Classic (2nd), 2022 Masters (3rd), the RBC Heritage (3rd) and last week’s RBC Canadian Open (10th). Lowry has 2 other top-20 finishes and hasn’t finished worse than 32nd in his 8 events played in 2022.

The bottom line is Lowry shows up at majors. He has 7 career top-10s in major tournaments, including his 2019 British Open victory.

  • $12.50 for winner (+3000) to earn a $375 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+650) to earn an $81.25 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+300) to earn a $75 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+130) to earn a $130 profit

Sungjae Im

We are getting value in Im here in part because he’s not a household name and he missed last month’s PGA Championship due to a positive COVID test prior to golf event in his native South Korea.

Since then, Im finished 15th at the Charles Schwab Challenge and 10th at the Memorial. Im has 7 top-20 finishes and 4 top-10 finishes in his 12 events played in 2022.

Im was the 1st-round leader at the 2022 Masters and finished 8th. If Im was able to play in the 2022 PGA Championship and played up to his 2022 form, then Im would be priced north of +3000 to win the 2022 U.S. Open.

More importantly, Im has a game suited for major tournaments. Majors test all of a golfer’s skillset and Im has gained strokes across all five major categories over his last 5, 10, 20 and 111 events. Im ranks 2nd on the tour in Par 4 average, 3rd in scrambling and 8th in GIRs.

  • $12.50 for winner (+4000) to earn an $500 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+750) to earn an $93.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+380) to earn a $95 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+175) to earn a $175 profit

Corey Conners

Golfers need to consistently hit fairways and greens if they have any hope of contending in the U.S. Open.

Conners has gained strokes off-the-tee (OTT) in 33 straight tournaments dating back to the 2021 Genesis Open and ranks 4th on the Tour in GIRs.

His only poor performance since March was a missed cut at the PGA Championship. Otherwise, Conners has 5 top-20 finishes in his last 9 events played, including 6th-place finishes at the 2022 Masters and last week’s RBC Canadian Open.

Conners’ finish in the RBC Canadian Open is noteworthy because he’s a native Canadian so the Canadian Open had a major-like atmosphere for him. Essentially, Conners has played well in important tourneys this season.

Conners is also one of the few golfers in this field with experience at The Country Club. He competed in the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship in Brookline.

  • $12.50 for winner (+5000) to earn a $625 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+1000) to earn a $125 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+500) to earn a $125 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+210) to earn a $210 profit
