UFC Fight Night 205 video: Emotional Tyson Pedro blasts Ike Villanueva in first fight since 2018

After three surgeries in three years, UFC Fight Night 205 proved to be a sweet outcome for Tyson Pedro.

[autotag]Tyson Pedro[/autotag] is back in a big way.

The UFC light heavyweight had his first fight since 2018 on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 205 in Las Vegas. Pedro (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) put away Ike Villanueva in devastating fashion in the first round of their light heavyweight bout.

Pedro hampered Villanueva with several leg kicks that limited his mobility. With the final leg kick, Pedro dropped Villanueva to the canvas and then followed up with the fight-ending uppercut on a downed Villanueva who was leaning against the cage.

It was a long road back for Pedro after he underwent three knee surgeries that kept him out of action for more than three years.

“It’s surreal at the moment,” Pedro said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I just needed a second to take it all in. There’s a lot going on. I can’t even put it into words how hard it’s been, four long years. This is the proudest that I can say I am of myself in a long time.”

Tyson Pedro returns from three-year layoff, meets Ike Villanueva at UFC Fight Night on April 23

Tyson Pedro will return to action for the first time since December 2018.

[autotag]Tyson Pedro[/autotag] will return to action for the first time since December 2018.

Pedro (7-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) faces [autotag]Ike Villanueva[/autotag] (18-13 MMA, 1-4 UFC) at a UFC Fight Night event on April 23 which doesn’t yet have a publicly known venue or location.

A person with knowledge of the booking confirmed the news to MMA Junkie after an initial report by Eurosport NL but asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make a formal announcement.

Pedro hasn’t competed in more than three years. The 30-year-old Australian underwent knee reconstruction surgery in 2019 to repair an injury which he suffered in his last octagon appearance, a third-round TKO loss to Mauricio Rua at UFC Fight Night 142 in December 2018.

Villanueva has struggled since joining the UFC roster in May 2020. The former Fury FC light heavyweight champion has lost four of his past five, with his lone octagon win coming in a second-round knockout of Vinicius Moreira at UFC on ESPN 20 in January 2021.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup for April 23 includes:

  • Jessica Andrade vs. Amanda Lemos
  • Louis Cosce vs. Preston Parsons
  • Cameron Else vs. Aori Qileng
  • Clay Guida vs. Claudio Puelles
  • Dean Barry vs. Mike Jackson
  • Maycee Barber vs. Montana De La Rosa
  • Tyson Pedro vs. Ike Villanueva

UFC Auckland: Tyson Pedro reveals he’s out of his fight vs. Vinicius Moreira in New Zealand

Tyson Pedro has revealed that an injury has forced him out of his upcoming bout vs. Vinicius Moreira at UFC Auckland.

After a year on the shelf recovering from knee surgery, Australian light heavyweight [autotag]Tyson Pedro[/autotag] revealed his plans for an early 2020 comeback have been put on hold.

Pedro (7-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) was scheduled to take on [autotag]Vinicius Moreira[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN+ 26 in Auckland, New Zealand. But the 28-year-old revealed he will no longer be competing on Feb. 22 due to an undisclosed injury.

He provided a statement on social media addressing his fans.

“Peaks and Valleys 🏔 Just when you think everything is going to your plan something hits you upside the head with a different one. Out of the fight in Feb, I’m gutted but thank you for all the messages. I’m not stressed as I know I’m coming back, I’ve never stopped before, so I’m not going to now. Every time I’ve messed up in life, been injured or blind sighted, something good came out from it, that I couldn’t see at the time. So until then, it’s all smiles and time to grind again. A massive positive was being able to connect and train with the boys down @citykickboxing thanks for having my family come through and showing us love. I’m praying for good news from the surgeon and a quick turnaround ✊🏽✊🏽 #hopeforthebestplanfortheworst#1yearrecovery2weekcamp

Pedro has not competed since December 2018, when he suffered a third-round TKO loss to Shogun Rua – his second straight defeat. He spent the whole of 2019 recovering from a knee injury he sustained during that bout and was on target for an early-2020 return against Contender Series alum Moreira (9-4 MMA, 0-3 UFC), who is still chasing his first win since graduating to the full UFC roster.

But now, following the news of Pedro’s latest injury, it seems the amiable Aussie’s return to action will have to wait a little longer.
