How each American, European player fared at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy

Only one player earned four points this week and just one went home pointless.

The Europeans are back on top.

After a historic loss two years ago Team Europe dominated the 2023 Ryder Cup to reclaim the trophy with a 16½-11½ victory over the three days of play at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome in Italy.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was the only player to score four points this week (4-1-0), while four players went unbeaten: Tyrrell Hatton (3-0-1), Viktor Hovland (3-0-1) Jon Rahm (2-0-2) and Robert MacIntyre (2-0-1).

Here’s a breakdown of how each player fared this week by session at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy.

2023 Ryder Cup Sunday singles matches, tee times feature must-watch showdowns

Set your alarms because you won’t want to miss these final matches.

Set your alarms, folks. You don’t want to miss these final 12 matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup.

European captain Luke Donald and American captain Zach Johnson announced their picks for the 12 Sunday singles matches and a handful are appointment television, no matter the time.

Team Europe holds a 10½-5½ lead after the first four sessions, but the momentum appears to have swung back toward the U.S. after the Americans claimed Saturday fourballs, 3-1. The Europeans need four points to win the Cup, while the U.S. needs at least 8½ to retain.

Check out who’s playing who in the final 12 singles matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

Europe expands Ryder Cup lead over United States after Saturday foursomes thanks to historic match win

The Europeans are cruising through the Ryder Cup.

ROME – There was more blue on the board on Saturday morning.

Team Europe extended its lead in the 44th Ryder Cup to 9½- 2½ after Saturday morning’s foursomes session, winning three of the four matches. That included Norway’s Viktor Hovland and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg trouncing the American team of Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, 9 and 7, the worst loss in Ryder Cup history in any 18-hole match, regardless of format.

There was no let up in the European side after opening a five-point lead after the first day. They won three of four matches and seven of eight in the foursomes format. It ties the largest lead after three sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the five-session format in 1963. (The U.S. led by seven in both 1967 and 1975.)

“Last night we talked about enjoying what we did yesterday but coming out and showing no mercy today,” McIlroy said. “Obviously the way Ludvig and Viktor started off and the way we started off, you know, that set the tone for the day again.”

It was a bloodbath for the Americans and for those fans who woke up early in hopes of seeing a valiant comeback, they were better off hitting the snooze as the Americans were thrown to the lions in Rome.

Tyrrell Hatton has hilarious back and forth with the media at the 2023 Ryder Cup over his swearing

Just Tyrrell being Tyrrell.

Tyrrell Hatton has always been known for, let’s say his fiery behavior on the golf course. He’s not one to hold back language or gestures when he’s out playing on Tour, sometimes to his detriment, but this week at the Ryder Cup is an opportunity where that emotion can be an ally.

While meeting with the media ahead of the 44th playing of the biennial bash between the United States and Europe, Hatton was asked who would win a swear-off, him or Jon Rahm.

“I think I would probably win in a swear-off. I’ve got everyone covered when it comes to that,” he said.

When asked about his extensive repertoire and carefree attitude toward expletives, Hatton said, “Yeah. Just any time of day, anywhere. No holding back. Doesn’t matter what we’re doing. I’m swearing.”

And after a brief moment, “F*** off.”

The media center erupted in laughter as the European team member left the microphone.

In two previous appearances at the Ryder Cup — 2018 and 2021 — Hatton holds an overall record of 2-4-1 and is 0-2-0 in Sunday singles.

Ryan Fox upstages European Ryder Cup team, wins 2023 BMW PGA Championship

Fox birdied eight of his last 13 holes during Sunday’s final round.

Ryan Fox birdied the 18th hole to win the 2023 BMW PGA Championship for his fourth DP World Tour victory, pumping his fist in the air just as the ball was dropping into the cup.

Along the way, he upstaged the European Ryder Cup team.

All 12 members of the squad arrived at Wentworth Club for one last tournament of preparation ahead of the biennial matches against the Americans, and all 12 made the cut, including Tyrrell Hatton, who birdied the 18th to forge a tie atop the leaderboard at 17 under.

But it was Fox who overcame a triple-bogey 7 on the third hole with birdies on eight of his last 13 holes during Sunday’s weather-interrupted final round to post a closing 67 and win his first Rolex Series event by a shot over Hatton and Aaron Rai.

“I played great, pretty much from the third hole on, didn’t miss a shot,” he said after his round. “It was a pretty cool feeling on the last, knowing I had one to win it and actually make it.”

Fox birdied four of the first five holes on the second nine before the weather stalled the action.

“The back nine was crazy. I made birdie from the trees on 15, first hole back after the delay,” he said.

Jon Rahm grabbed solo fourth, two shots back. He had an eagle putt on the 18th hole that would’ve tied him for the lead, but he missed just left to finish 16 under.

Rai also had an eagle putt at the last and while his ball was tracking, it could only catch a bit of the edge of the cup and it lipped out.

Ryder Cup rookie-to-be Ludvig Aberg held the 54-hole lead by a shot after rounds of 68-66-66 but shot a final-round 76, his card featuring two bogeys, two double bogeys and just two birdies.

Defending tournament champion Shane Lowry tied for 18th after shooting a final-round 71 which included a 9 on the par-5 17th hole.

How are the 12 Team Europe Ryder Cuppers faring at the BMW PGA Championship?

One of the major subplots at this week’s BMW PGA Championship is how the Team Europe players are faring.

Earlier this month, U.S. captain Zach Johnson locked in his 12-player roster for the upcoming 2023 Ryder Cup, and European captain Luke Donald followed by doing the same.

After the conclusion of the 2023 Omega European Masters the six automatic qualifiers – three from a world points list and three from a European points list – for Team Europe that are bound for Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy were confirmed. Donald then made his six captain’s picks, including a pair of surprise rookies.

As we’re counting down the days until the biennial event in Italy, one of the major subplots at this week’s BMW PGA Championship in Surrey, England, is how the Team Europe players are faring.

Euro team captain Luke Donald is also competing at Wentworth, as are five of his six vice captains. Vice captain Nicolas Colsaerts is doing the best out of this group, as he’s tied for 38th. Vice captains Thomas Bjorn, Francesco Molinari and Edoard Molinari all missed the cut. Jose Maria Olazabal isn’t playing.

Here’s where the 12 members stand after two days:

Sahith Theegala, Justin Rose just outside the top 30 for Tour Championship

It’s crunch time near the Windy City.

It’s crunch time near the Windy City.

The second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is the 2023 BMW Championship this week at Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago, with the top 50 from last week’s field of 70 having advanced.

Sunday night, there will be but 30 golfers moving on to the 2023 Tour Championship, the season finale at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

All 50 players who reached the BMW earned a guaranteed spot in the 2024 signature events, but they’re also eyeing a huge potential payday next week, as the 2023 FedEx Cup champion will bag $18 million in bonus money.

Guys like Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are all in prime position to advance but there’s a few golfers right near the top-30 cutline who have to make sure they don’t slip, just as there are some who need to make a move in the upward direction.

Here’s a look at Nos. 26-30, trying to hold serve, and those in Nos. 31-35, who need a big week. The PGA Tour’s projected standings will be updated during play starting Thursday and finalized Sunday night for next week.

Position Golfer
26 Tyrrell Hatton
27 Jordan Spieth
28 Sungjae Im
29 Chris Kirk
30 Sam Burns
31 Sahith Theegala
32 Justin Rose
33 Kurt Kitayama
34
Denny McCarthy
35 Seamus Power

The Tour Championship will once again use the Starting Strokes format, with the golfer in the top slot starting at 10 under, the No. 2 guy will be at 8 under and so on. Golfers in the 26th through 30th slots next week will start at even par.

The winner takes home $18 million. Last place is good for $500,000.

Tyrrell Hatton had the most sarcastic reaction with his putter after carding a 9 on his final hole at The Open

Not a great end of the round for Hatton.

Things were going pretty well for Tyrrell Hatton at The Open 2023.

But then, he got to No. 18 at Royal Liverpool in the second round. And the wheels came off.

Ultimately, at the Par 5 hole, he shot a 9 for a quadruple-bogey. And when he finally putted the ball in to finish his round, he took his putter, pretended it was a gun and — sarcastically, I assume — took a couple of “shots.”

Hey, it’s better than the meltdown we saw two years ago or flipped the bird at a pond. And 18 is a tough hole!

2023 Genesis Scottish Open odds, course history and picks to win

Last year at the Renaissance, Fleetwood tied for fourth.

Before the world of golf heads to Royal Liverpool for the 151st Open next week, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour are set to host the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick.

An absolutely loaded field is set to tee off Thursday, including defending champion Xander Schauffele. He’ll be joined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Cantlay.

Schauffele, who last tied for 19th at the Travelers Championship, beat Kurt Kitayama by one shot last season to earn himself the title. In 2021, Min Woo Lee survived a playoff against Thomas Detry and Matt Fitzpatrick for his second DP World Tour win.
