Sixers to take care of Tyrese Maxey once they use their cap space

The Philadelphia 76ers will take care of Tyrese Maxey once they use their cap space in free agency.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a few things to take care of once free agency begins on Sunday evening. They will have to first handle their meeting with Paul George as they look to lure him to Philadelphia, but they will also have to take care of their rising star.

Tyrese Maxey, who finished up a terrific fourth season in the league, is set to enter free agency as well. However, it isn’t like the Sixers are going to let him go anywhere. After he averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds while taking the big leap forward that the Sixers were hoping for, now’s the time to lock him up for the long term.

Per Marc Stein, the Sixers will first use their cap space before taking care of Maxey:

League sources say that the Sixers will swiftly sign Maxey to a five-year extension worth in excess of $200 million later in July after first making full use of their cap space.

Maxey is worth the money the Sixers plan to give him. He is going to continue to be one of the top players in this league as he grows in this league. His work ethic is maniacal and he has a thirst to improve on a daily basis. The Sixers are going to lean on him and Joel Embiid as they move forward.

Daryl Morey discusses a Jared McCain-Tyrese Maxey Sixers backcourt

Philadelphia 76ers president Daryl Morey discusses the possibility of a Jared McCain-Tyrese Maxey backcourt.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers made a selection on Wednesday with the No. 16 pick. With that selection, the Sixers decided on Duke guard Jared McCain who President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey stated was the best player available at No. 16.

McCain certainly brings what the Sixers are looking for on the offensive end of the floor. He shot 41.4% from deep on 5.8 attempts per game and he is somebody who can lead the second unit or maybe even play with Tyrese Maxey in some lineups.

However, with both Maxey and McCain standing at 6-foot-3, it is also fair to wonder whether they will be able to work on the defensive end.

“I think that’s a valid concern,” Morey said on Wednesday night. “Obviously, your backcourt, in a perfect world, you’d have taller, but I think you have to compensate (for) that with strength. He’s got a strong frame — very strong. Good rebounder. We think he’ll be a solid defender in the league over time.”

To the rebounding point, McCain did average 5.0 rebounds in his freshman season with the Blue Devils. Despite his smaller stature, he was not afraid to battle in the paint and grab some big rebounds for his team.

Also, over time, he did improve as a defender by using his strength. While McCain can take on some of the defensive responsibility one-on-one, Maxey can play the passing lanes a bit.

“He was being targeted at Duke and as the season went on, he became someone that was actually one of their better defenders,” Morey acknowledged. “He’s got the attitude that coach (Nick) Nurse likes to bring, which is just get a little bit better every day. He’s got a 95th percentile approach to the game — teammate, work ethic. We’ve had some good luck with taking the kids with a real base of potential and a strong work ethic. We were really happy. I’m excited for Philadelphia to get to know him.”

On top of the defensive ability that he would be able to bring to the table, McCain and Maxey are volume shooters. Maxey shot 8.1 3-pointers per game in the 2023-24 season while McCain took 5.8 in college with both knocking them down at a high percentage. That type of production works in today’s NBA.

“He’s already putting up a high volume of 3s and being able to shoot 3s at a high volume and be in the high 30s, low 40s is maybe the most valuable skill in the NBA,” Morey added on McCain. “It’s on the list of the top few so that’s a big, big part of the calculus with Jared. 100%. Absolutely.”

Time will tell, but it will be interesting to see if McCain and Maxey will be able to play in the same backcourt for Philadelphia.

Nick Nurse confident Sixers can win with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey

Coach Nick Nurse expresses confidence that the Philadelphia 76ers can win with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a lot to look forward to heading into the offseason. Despite a tough Round 1 exit at the hands of the New York Knicks, the Sixers have a star duo in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey that should excite everybody.

Embiid was on his way to winning his second consecutive MVP award before the unfortunate meniscus injury he suffered in January which caused him to miss two months. He was scoring efficiently and had his playmaking abilities unlocked.

Maxey blossomed in the 2023-24 season and made his first All-Star appearance. He’s only going to get better and the Sixers now have the challenge of building the roster around the two stars.

Coach Nick Nurse hopped on “The Draymond Green Show” and expressed confidence in Embiid, Maxey, and the Sixers as a whole to get the job done in the offseason:

First of all, you’re 100% right about Tyrese. He makes every room he goes into better. I still think he’s got a ceiling that hasn’t been hit yet. I think he’s got to—he doesn’t understand how good he’s gonna be yet. I can’t wait to see him keep growing, and listen, I think that as you know, man we need—we got a whole bunch of roster spots. We got a whole bunch of money to spend and we got to piece it together around those two guys like who complements them. Who’s got some toughness? Who’s got some winning spirit? Who’s got some winning experience? Who’s not afraid? Who can accept some roles? All that kind of stuff that you need to build a team that we’re certainly trying. I believe in my front office and Daryl (Morey) and Elton (Brand) and ownership and all that stuff, and I certainly believe in those two players.

The Sixers will be looking to add some win-now players around Embiid and Maxey so they can challenge the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference. The Cs are the defending champs and they have been to at least the conference finals in four of the previous five seasons.

Nurse is right in expressing confidence in Embiid and Maxey. If the Sixers could have just one healthy playoff run from Embiid, then who knows what this team could do? Combine that possibility with the continued rise of Maxey and the Sixers have a lot to look forward to in the coming seasons.

Sixers star Tyrese Maxey ranked 4th-best point guard in the league

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey comes in ranked as the 4th-best point guard in the league.

Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Tyrese Maxey had a helluva fourth season in the league. The young man averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 45% from the floor and 37.3% from deep in the 2023-24 season on his way to his first All-Star appearance.

Maxey, who is due for a big contract once free agency hits on June 30, took over the starting point guard job amid the James Harden saga and he didn’t blink. He took on a lot of responsibility and did a great job of taking steps forward in the playmaking area of his game.

With the 2023-24 season concluded, it’s now time for rankings. HoopsHype ranked the top point guards in the league and Maxey came in at No. 4 on the list:

Maxey has fantastic speed, the ability to stop on a dime and launch a three, great lateral quickness that helps him get by defenders and can score at a high rate from all three levels while also being a good playmaker. All-NBA just eluded Maxey this season but with another campaign like the one he just had, that distinction should be the next one he picks up.

One has to figure that Maxey will continue to make a jump in this league. The young star has a maniacal work ethic and coach Nick Nurse has done a great job of unlocking other parts of his game. The Sixers will continue to lean on him as time moves on.

NBA insider gives key updates for Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Sixers

An NBA insider offers up two key updates when it comes to Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers figure to be one of the more active teams in the league heading into the offseason. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has put the team in a great position to bring in another max player to join Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey on the title chase.

The biggest name on their radar has been Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George. There have been recent reports that Philadelphia’s interest has “significantly waned” when it comes to George, but it appears that those reports have been exaggerated a bit.

Per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto:

Despite a recent report that Philadelphia’s interest in Paul George has cooled amid uncertainty about whether he’d go across the country and sign with Philadelphia in free agency, there remains significant interest from the 76ers in signing him as a free agent, league sources told HoopsHype.

The Sixers can throw a bunch of money at George in order to sway him to leave LA and join them in Philadelphia, but there is a chance the Clippers can convince him to stay. LA has a lot invested in the George-Kawhi Leonard tandem heading into a new arena and it would like to keep the two of them together.

Then, there’s Maxey who will likely be a free agent officially for all of a minute. The Sixers had Maxey wait for an extension so they could maximize cap space. Now that the time is come, the young All-Star will receive a huge deal to remain in Philadelphia.

Per Scotto:

The most certain thing for Philadelphia is Tyrese Maxey re-signing on a max extension, league sources said. However, after having to wait a year and being patient with Philadelphia’s front office as it prioritized max cap space, keep an eye on Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul wanting a player option on the final year of Maxey’s new contract and the full 15 percent trade kicker he’s eligible for in negotiations, HoopsHype has learned.

Signing Maxey to a big extension would keep him in Philadelphia with Embiid for the long term. A 5-year deal, for example, would keep him with the Sixers through the 2028-29 season which lines him up with Embiid should the big fella sign an extension in the 2024 offseason.

Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey ranked 6th-best player in the NBA under age of 25

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is ranked No. 6 on the list of the top 25 players under the age of 25.

There is a great deal of young talent in the NBA as the skill level around the league continues to rise. Many younger players continue to take steps forward, and the league is in good hands.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is one of those young players. He averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds on his way to being named a first-time All-Star.

Maxey had to take over the point guard job for a title contender amid the James Harden saga, and he didn’t blink.

The Ringer ranked the top 25 players in the NBA under the age of 25 and Maxey came in ranked No. 6:

In the most basic terms, the ideal point guard can shoot, score, and pass without turning the ball over, and Maxey checks every one of those boxes. His speed is exciting, he has a magnetic personality, and he’s not afraid to attempt audacious shots in the clutch. What more could you want from a young guard on the rise?

Maxey will undoubtedly continue to take steps forward as a player. He has a maniacal work ethic and is somebody who understands what he has to do in order to be the star guard that he’s expected to be.

Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey snubbed from All-NBA Team, affects extension

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey was snubbed from an All-NBA Team and will have his extension money affected by it.

The NBA announced the All-NBA Teams on Wednesday night to honor the top players in the league.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey was a candidate for the teams after an All-Star season in which he averaged 25.9 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 45% from the floor and 37.3% from deep. He certainly had a strong case for inclusion.

However, Maxey came up short.

The All-NBA third team consisted of Steph Curry, Devin Booker, Tyrese Haliburton, LeBron James and Domantas Sabonis. That meant the young Sixers star was snubbed, and it affects his contract extension and the amount of max money he can make.

If he had been named to an All-NBA Team, Maxey could have earned up to $245.3 million. By not being named, the max he can is $204.4 million.

Though Maxey did not make an All-NBA Team, this will serve as more motivation for him to take yet another developmental leap in the 2024-25 season. The young guard is undeniably on a superstar trajectory.

Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey gives love to Anthony Edwards, 2020 draft class

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey gave love to Anthony Edwards and the 2020 draft class for their success.

The 2020 NBA draft was an interesting one, to say the least. After the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the college basketball season and limited what teams could see of potential draft prospects, teams had to get serious about researching players in the draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers hit on one of the top players from 2020. Tyrese Maxey has blossomed into an All-Star and one of the top players in the league. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2024 and is set up for more success in the future.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Indiana Pacers advanced to the Western Conference finals and the Eastern Conference finals, respectively, it meant Maxey’s 2020 draft mates made a big impact. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels are two leaders for the Wolves while Tyrese Haliburton leads Indiana from that draft class.

Maxey gave a shoutout to his 2020 draft mates after the Timberwolves advanced.

While Edwards, McDaniels and Haliburton look to win a title for the first time in their careers, Maxey and the Sixers are getting back to work to prepare for the 2024-25 season.

On Thursday, Maxey added another trophy to his case, winning the NBA Sportsmanship award. The award honors the player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.

Maxey was the Sixers nominee, as each team chooses one player. The list is then narrowed down to six finalists, and current plays vote on the winner. Maxey beat out Kevin Love of the Miami Heat, who finished second. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was also a finalist.

At Kentucky, Maxey played just one season, but averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. He was drafted by the 76ers with the 21st overall pick in 2020. He is representing Kentucky well so far.
