Raiders injury news: DE Tyree Wilson to return Week 3 vs Panthers

Raiders will get back former first round pick DE Tyree Wilson for their home opener Week 3 vs Panthers

Six snaps into the season opener, the Raiders lost Tyree Wilson to a sprained knee. After the game, he was sporting a brace on his right knee that limited mobility on the knee and at the time it was not known how much time he would miss.

It turns out that timeline was one full game.

The former seventh overall pick returned to practice this week for the Raiders. Though he was limited the first two practices. And Friday, head coach Antonio Pierce said Wilson will play in Sunday’s home opener against the Panthers.

With starting defensive end Malcolm Koonce on injured reserve for at least a couple more weeks, Wilson could see significant snaps, though he may not start. Even though he was healthy to open the season, it was Charles Snowden who got the start at defensive end opposite Maxx Crosby.

Snowden got the start last week in Baltimore as well, though Janarius Robinson would see more snaps. With Crosby typically playing every snap, it figures to be a three-man rotation between Wilson, Snowden, and Robinson at the other end spot.

Raiders, Panthers Week 3 injury report: DE Tyree Wilson, G Jackson Powers-Johnson return to practice

DE Tyree Wilson, G Jackson Powers-Johnson return to practice for Raiders

It’s take three for Raiders rookie guard Jackson Powers-Johnson. The second round guard didn’t show up on the injury report for the first time this season. Giving the round two pick a shot to see his first game action this week.

Powers-Johnson missed the first two games with an unknown illness after missing all of camp and preseason with an undisclosed injury.

Also returning to practice for the Raiders was DE Tyree Wilson who suffered a sprained knee early in the season opener against the Chargers. Wilson was limited in practice, so it remains to be seen if his return to practice will mean he is ready to play Sunday when the Panthers come to town.

Missing from practice was Divine Deablo (oblique/concussion) and DeCamerion Richardson (hamstring). Several others were limited, which means their status will be something to monitor as the week goes on.

The Panthers had two players missing with injury Wednesday including DE A’Shawn Robinson (knee) and DT Sky Tuttle (foot).

Raiders sign former 1st round EDGE to replace injured former 1st round EDGE

How do you replace a former top pick edge rusher? Why, with another former top pick edge rusher, of course.

Last Thursday, the Raiders lost starting edge rusher Malcolm Koonce to a knee injury. Six snaps into the game on Sunday, they lost former seventh overall pick Tyree Wilson to a knee injury. Thus leaving the position not only weaker, but lacking depth.

The Koonce injury was a huge blow. But they were hoping for the depth to step up and lessen that blow until Koonce could return. The Wilson injury meant something needed to happen.

“It got thin real quick,” Pierce said of the defensive end depth. “Telesco’s working on that as we speak.”

Well, Telesco’s work has yielded a result as the Raiders have signed former first round pick (20th overall) K’Lavon Chaissan to their practice squad.

Chaisson was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 20th overall pick in the 2020 draft out of LSU.

Over four season in Jacksonville, he had just five career sacks. They didn’t pick up his fifth year option and he left as a free agent. He signed with the Panthers this offseason and was released last week, ahead of the season opener.

Along with the Chaisson addition, the Raiders have also added CB Kyu Blu Kelly to the practice squad. Kelly was a 5th round pick by the Ravens in the 2023 draft out of Stanford. He didn’t make the roster out of camp and spent time on three different teams last season — the Packers, Seahawks, and Commanders.

Raiders DE Tyree Wilson suffered sprained knee in opener, could miss some time

Tyree Wilson could miss some time with his knee injury.

The hopes that Tyree Wilson might step up entering his second season took a hit Sunday. The 2023 seventh overall pick lasted just six snaps in the team’s season opener against the Chargers before leaving with a knee injury and not returning.

Following the game, he was sporting a brace on his right knee and walked gingerly with the brace trying to ensure minimal movement of the knee.

Monday morning brought the prognosis. He has a sprained knee. This means it’s not expected to be a long term injury, but how long he will be missing is not yet known.

The team had hoped Wilson would step up and help fill the void left by the loss of Malcolm Koonce to a knee injury this past week that landed him on injured reserve.

Instead it was Charles Snowden, who was just signed off the practice squad, who led the way along with Janarius Robinson. Maxx Crosby, of course, played every snap at the other defensive end spot.

“It got thin real quick,” Pierce said of the defensive end depth. “Telesco’s working on that as we speak.”

Raiders DE Tyree Wilson leaves game vs Chargers with knee injury, doesn’t return

Tyree Wilson leaves opener with knee injury, doesn’t return

With Malcolm Koonce placed on injured reserve prior to the season opener, the Raiders were hoping Tyree Wilson would step up and help pick up the slack. Those hopes took a hit today.

The 2023 7th overall pick left the opener in Los Angeles early with a knee injury and didn’t return. He was officially ruled out early in the third quarter.

Wilson came into the came having been listed on the injury report with a foot issue. After a foot injury disrupted his development as a rookie.

Hopefully this knee injury isn’t too serious. With him out as well, it will be Janarius Robinson and Charles Snowden who will fill in opposite Maxx Crosby on the defensive line.

Sports doctor says Raiders DE Tyree Wilson could have reduced explosiveness when he returns from injury

Raiders DE Tyree Wilson could have reduced explosiveness Week 1

The medical field is no different than any profession or corner of life — everyone has an opinion.

One medical professional has his own opinion about Raiders rookie defensive end Tyree Wilson. Deepak Chona M.D., a Harvard-trained sports surgeon who has provided insight for ESPN and others, predicts that Wilson will likely be ready by Week 1 of the NFL season, but his explosiveness could be less than 100 percent due to his still-lingering right foot injury.

Chona predicts there is just a 66 percent chance Wilson, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, will be on the field to start the season. Furthermore, he says Wilson’s explosiveness could be at just 80 percent when he returns. He says that reduced explosiveness is common with Wilson’s type of foot injury and the issue can linger for as long as a year.

Here’s Chona in his own words, courtesy of Medspiration.

The Raiders took a calculated risk when they drafted the injured Wilson, but they clearly plan for him to contribute to a new-look defense in 2023. If Wilson doesn’t produce this year or isn’t ready for Week 1, it will be a mini-disaster for general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels.

Albert Breer of SI.com recently reported that Wilson will practice before the season starts, so we’ll just have to wait and see when the Raiders rookie gets on the field. The Las Vegas defense needs all the help it can get, but with Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones firmly entrenched as starters on the edge, the Raiders can afford to be cautious with Wilson.

It’s likely they can’t afford a lost year from Wilson though. The most concerning part of Chona’s educated prediction is a potential loss of explosiveness. He did say that Wilson could be at 90 percent by Week 8, but that doesn’t sound great either.

It’s all an opinion at this point though. The Raiders and the entire NFL will no doubt judge Wilson based on his on-field performance when he finally suits up.
