Stony Brook has mystery on its side as the Seawolves come to Autzen

Not a lot is known about Stony Brook, who will play Oregon for the first time, and that could be to the Seawolves’ advantage.

There’s not a lot of information available when it comes to a Football Championship Subdivision school when they’ve never played Oregon before.

Stony Brook is a team that sounds like it came straight out of the Flintstones, but instead, the Seawolves are out of New York and competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

After the FCS season was canceled in 2020, those teams were able to play a few games this past spring and the Seawolves were able to play four games where they went 1-3. Their only win came against Albany in a 21-7 outcome.

Now in a more regular season here in 2021, Stony Brook got off to a rough start in a 27-21 loss to New Hampshire. But the Seawolves rebounded last week with a 24-3 win over Colgate.

The Seawolves managed to get their ground game going as they rushed for 271 yards and averaged nearly six yards a carry. Colgate did take an early 3-0 lead, but then Stony Brook’s defense dominated and held their opponents off the scoreboard.

According to running back Ty Son Lawson, the difference between Week 1 and Week 2 was huge.

“The first week everyone seemed like they weren’t on, but they really showed out this week,” he told the Stony Brook student media. “The offensive line did a (heck) of a job.”

Lawson is the Seawolves’ leading rusher as the 5-foot-10 redshirt junior is averaging 88 yards in the first two games of the season. Lawson also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for his career when he rambled for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the win last week.

Although Stony Brook does possess a three-year starter at quarterback in Tyquell Fields, the Seawolves rely on the run game and their defense to win games. Field threw just 11 times, completing seven and going for 120 yards.

In the loss to New Hampshire, Fields had to throw more than he was used to as the fifth-year senior went 21-of-43 for 255 yards and a touchdown, but two interceptions.

But now Stony Brook is going to go on another level as they prepare to fly cross-country and play against the No. 4 Ducks team. Lawson said it’s time to have some fun.

“I honestly can’t wait. It’s going to be fun. I’ve been preparing myself to play on that level for a long time now,” he said. “So I’m ready to take on the competitive standpoint of it.”

Oregon and Stony Brook is set to kick it off at 4:30 p.m. PT televised on the Pac-12 Network.
