Miles Russell ousted at U.S. Junior Amateur; final will be Tyler Watts vs. Trevor Gutschewski

Russell’s run in the U.S. Junior Amateur ended on Friday.

Miles Russell’s run in the U.S. Junior Amateur ended on Friday with another match that went the distance.

Russell, the 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach native and the No. 1 player on the American Junior Golf Association Rankings, fell to Jay Leng of San Diego 1 up after rallying from three holes down with seven to play at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Russell won the 12th and 15th holes with pars but Leng, who will enroll at Stanford next month, matched Russell over the last three holes to advance to the semifinals later Friday against Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Alabama. In that match, Watts, the match play portion’s No. 2 seed, prevailed 3 and 2.

The other semifinal featured Trevor Gutschewski of Omaha, Nebraska, who ousted stroke-play medalist Brian Blades in the second round, against Xihuan Chang of China. Gutschewski won that match, 2 and 1, as the No. 33 seed.

Gutschewski is the son of PGA Tour veteran Scott Gutschewski, competing this week at the 3M Open. He’s set to attend Florida this fall.

The 36-hole final is Saturday at 8 a.m. ET. Peacock will have live streaming of the second 18.

Russell was the last surviving Floridian and the only one to reach the third round. He also faced three consecutive opponents who will be playing college golf within a month: Leng (Stanford), CJ Winchenbaugh (Georgetown) and Billy Davis (Auburn).

Who’s going to come out on top?

Some of the top content creators in golf battling it out for a spot at an official PGA Tour event? Yeah, it’s happening next month.

The Monday qualifer for the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic is called The Q at Myrtle Beach and it will feature 16 players competing for a sponsor exemption into the tournament at Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina.

The Myrtle Beach Classic, a new event on the Tour schedule in 2024, will be played May 9-12 and will feature a purse of $3.9 million, with 300 FedExCup points awarded to the champion. It’s an opposite-field event held the same week as the Wells Fargo Championship.

The Q at Myrtle Beach field includes 16 players, many with ties to South Carolina, including eight of the most prominent golf content creators.

All professional and amateur competitors meet the PGA Tour tournament regulations for sponsor exemptions and will be eligible if they qualify.

The 18-hole shootout will be March 4 at TPC Myrtle Beach. It will be closed to the public, but a 90-minute video will be released on Play Golf Myrtle Beach’s YouTube page on April 23, and the content creators will post videos on their respective channels documenting their experiences.

Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Alabama, posted a final round of two-under 70. He fired five birdies today to claim the 51st Southern Junior Championship title with a 9-under 207 total at Baton Rouge Country Club in Louisiana. Watts finished five shots ahead of his competition.

The win marked another amazing triumph for Watts, who just last week became the youngest champion in Alabama State Amateur history. His age record surpassed the one set by Gordon Sargent of Vanderbilt, who is currently competing as an amateur in the U.S. Open.

Collins Trolio of West Point, Mississippi, who finished second with a four-under 212 score. Noah Kent of Naples, Florida, and Liam Pasternak of Morristown, New Jersey, each finished at two-under 214. After a scorecard playoff, Kent claimed bronze.

The winner of the Southern Junior Championship receives a silver medal, his name engraved on the Perry Adair Trophy, a Calamity Jane putter, exemption into the 2024 Southern Amateur Championship, exemption into all future Southern Junior Championships in which he is eligible to compete and is fully exempt with the American Junior Golf Association for 12 months.
