Swinney shares an injury update on Tyler Venables

Dabo Swinney shared an injury update on Tyler Venables as the Tigers prepare for their matchup against North Carolina.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shared an injury update on safety Tyler Venables during his weekly Tuesday press conference, delivering some good news on the veteran Tiger.

According to Swinney, Venables is is back and will be ready to go for this week’s matchup against North Carolina. Some great news for a Clemson secondary that has been playing well this season.

“He’s back. They released him this week, so he’s back and he’ll be available,” Swinney said. “Obviously hasn’t played, but he did scout team last week. In fact, he was scout team player of the week. Imagine that. So, that was good to see.”

“Everybody loves T-Bone, man. He’s been a coach for us,” Swinney said. “I mean he’s been on the headset. He’s been working out there. I think he’s really enjoyed that. He’s going to be a great coach one day. I think it’s been a good perspective for him as we’ve gone through games and stuff. But he’s excited. He’s worked really, really hard to get back.”

Since joining the Tigers, Venables has dealt with multiple injuries but has been productive when on the field. Over 34 games, he has  recorded 98 tackles (5.5 for loss), a sack, an interception and seven pass breakup.

“He’s been through a lot with his labrum and his hip, his groin and torn hamstrings and all that stuff,” Swinney said. “So, we’ll have him available and see how it goes.”

Dabo Swinney on Tyler Venables: ‘That’d be a real shot in the arm, too, to have him available down the stretch and preserve his redshirt’

Dabo Swinney on a possible Tyler Venables return this season.

The Clemson defense has been strong this season, and they could get even stronger with the possible return of safety Tyler Venables.

Tigers’ head coach, Dabo Swinney, met with the media Tuesday and shared that Venables is back to practice and playing on the scout team this week. Having hip surgery in the summer, Venables has been redshirting this season, and it sounds like the plan is still a redshirt season.

“This week, the plan for him is to do scout team all week because he really hasn’t played football since the spring,” Swinney said. “So, he’s going to take all the reps on the scout team and see how he responds this week. So, that’d be a real shot in the arm, too, to have him available down the stretch and preserve his redshirt.”

If the Tigers can preserve his redshirt and get him back on the field this season, that would be huge. During his career with Clemson, Venables has recorded 98 tackles (5.5 for loss), a sack, an interception, and seven pass breakups in 716 defensive snaps over 34 games (two starts).

We will wait to see how his status updates over the next week.

Clemson head Dabo Swinney provided several injury updates during his weekly Tuesday press conference.

Swinney said sophomore wide receiver Beaux Collins, who missed last Saturday’s game against Louisville with a separated shoulder, returned to practice on Monday.

“We’re working him back in,” Swinney said. “So, I’d say we’d put him on that day-to-day timeline.”

Swinney said junior linebacker Trenton Simpson, who was held out of the Louisville game with an ankle injury, is day-to-day as well.

As for Tyler Venables, Swinney said Sunday evening that the junior safety “pulled his hamstring pretty good” in the Louisville game. On Tuesday, Swinney said he’s “definitely out” this week.

Swinney said Venables doesn’t need anything surgical to repair his hamstring but just has “to heal up.”

Swinney added that junior running back Kobe Pace, who’s been making progress from a high ankle sprain that’s kept him out of the last five games, “was ready to play” in last week’s game but they just decided to hold him out.

“Not quite 100 percent. There’s not many people 100 percent this time of year,” Swinney said. “But it was a situation where especially where the game was, no sense in putting him in late in the fourth quarter there just to get him in the game. I think if it was a situation where we had to have him, he would have played… But he’s moving good, looks good. He’s ready to play.”

Swinney also commented on fifth-year senior defensive end Xavier Thomas, who underwent surgery on his foot for the second time this season.

After finally getting back on the field after missing the first five game of the season, he reinjured the foot during practice. Thomas and the staff made the best decision for him and had another surgery that ended his season.

“It went well,” Swinney said Tuesday. “It was great, good spirits… so, he’s doing good.”

Swinney also announced Tuesday that junior cornerback Malcolm Greene is dealing with a groin injury that will require surgery.

Dabo Swinney held his weekly Zoom conference call with reporters on Sunday evening and said Clemson came through Saturday’s 31-16 win over Louisville “pretty good” from an injury standpoint.

However, the Tigers’ head coach did give some tough news on a co-starter at safety.

Swinney said junior Tyler Venables “pulled his hamstring pretty good” during Saturday’s game and will be out for “a little while.”

“I hate that for him because he had really just gotten himself back rolling,” Swinney said. “He’s had several injuries and freak things that he’s had to deal with. He had a great week of practice and I was excited for him for the game. But he’s a tough kid and just hate it for him, but he’ll bounce back.”

Swinney was asked if Venables could possibly make it back for Clemson’s regular season finale against rival South Carolina or the ACC Championship Game vs. UNC.

“I don’t know. I think it’s hard to predict,” Swinney said. “I would say for sure probably best case maybe South Carolina or the championship game. But you never know how those things are going to respond and all that stuff. But he’ll work his butt off to get back whenever he can.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided several injury updates following the 10th-ranked Tigers’ 31-16 victory over Louisville on Saturday at Death Valley.

Swinney said starting linebacker Trenton Simpson “hopefully will be back next week” against Miami.

Swinney said both Simpson and starting offensive lineman Walker Parks, who also missed Saturday’s game, were close to playing today but could not get cleared for the Louisville game.

Swinney said Simpson has an ankle injury, while Parks is in concussion protocol.

As for wide receiver Beaux Collins, who was also out for the Louisville game with a separated shoulder, Swinney doesn’t know if he’ll return for next week’s game but says he’ll be back “for sure” for the South Carolina game.

Swinney also said safety Tyler Venables went out during the Louisville game with a hamstring injury, and he doesn’t know how long Venables will be out.

Venables says ‘we will definitely have our hands full’ against Notre Dame

Tyler Venables spoke to the media on Monday, detailing what the Notre Dame offense will bring to the table this Saturday.

The junior Clemson safety reflected on the most recent games between the Tigers and the Fighting Irish.

“We have some real competitiveness in the past couple of years and the last time we played Notre Dame,” he said.

The last time Clemson played Notre Dame was in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 20, 2020 and a lot has changed for both teams since then.

Venables described the upcoming game on Saturday in South Bend to be no different than the competitiveness seen in recent matchups.

“We definitely have our hands full and a tall task,” he said.

Notre Dame utilized a heavy rush attack against Syracuse, but the Irish also have a real talent in tight end Michael Mayer.

Venables described what aspects of Notre Dame’s offense will make it a threat to the Clemson defense.

“Then you watch their tight end play and 87 [Mayer] is unreal and probably the best tight end we are going to see all year,” he said. “But, they have more than one guy that is fully capable of doing it, so they can get in some heavier sets. If you have three running backs who are big dudes and not afraid of contact and willing to punish defensive guys, they take a lot of pride in their run game.”

Venables credits the consistency of the Fighting Irish offense to be heavily reliant on the run game, grabbing those first and second downs and evading dangerous third-down situations.

“That’s why they’re so consistent, because their first- and second-down production,” he said.

Beyond the impact of Notre Dame’s run game, Venables believes the passion of head coach Marcus Freeman has instilled a revitalized vision, especially on offense.

After starting quarterback Tyler Buchner was sidelined for the remainder of the season with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, the team has had to adapt.

Venables believes the passion the Irish play with is definitely playing into their offensive consistency out there on the field.

“They play with a lot of passion and that’s a direct reflection of their leadership and their coaching,” he said. “I was mainly focused on their offense, but they do a really good job at being so efficient and that’s because of how well they do on first and second down.”

It will come down to how the Clemson defense responds to the heavy run game of a physical Notre Dame offense this Saturday, but even with the “tall task” ahead, Venables believes it will be about not letting the moment get too big for the fifth-ranked Tigers.

Clemson safety Tyler Venables got emotional during his press conference Monday when talking about his roommate, defensive tackle Bryan Bresee.

Venables was asked how Bresee has dealt with the death of his sister Ella, who passed away on Sept. 15 at 15 years old following a battle with brain cancer.

“It’s been tough,” Venables said, choked up. “He’s just such a good dude. I can’t imagine how that would be for me. But just to see him, he’s just so passionate about everything he does, and his whole family, his parents, are such good people. Just really good people. It’s been hard, but he’s just kept going, and he’s just such a good dude.”

Swinney ‘super pumped’ to have entire defense available

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is ready to see his defense have “all hands on deck” against Florida State on Saturday.

Clemson’s defense could return all 11 starters against Florida State on Saturday, and head coach Dabo Swinney is more than ready for the unit to be at full strength.

Although defensive end Xavier Thomas returned last week against Boston College, several other starters were out that game — a reoccurring theme for the Tigers since Week 1.

Now, the coaching staff is optimistic that defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, cornerback Sheridan Jones and safeties R.J. Mickens and Tyler Venables will all be available against the Seminoles.

After the team’s Wednesday practice, Swinney expressed his excitement to see the defense have all its players at its disposal.

“I’m super pumped to have all hands on deck,” Swinney said. “They’ve all been there at one point or another, but having everybody available at one time, we really haven’t had that just yet. Hopefully, we’ll be able to really play at a high level and play sharp, play smart, keep guys fresh.”

Bresee has missed the last two games due to a kidney infection, Jones has been out three games for a stinger, while Mickens and Venables only missed last week.

Even if the entire group returns to the field this week, the defense will have their hands full against a balanced and productive Florida State offense.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Clemson will once again be without some key contributors in tonight’s game against Boston College, including some new absences in the secondary.

But the Tigers’ defensive line could get a boost against the Eagles.

Cornerback Sheridan Jones is among the players who didn’t make the trip to Alumni Stadium, according to the travel roster released by the team. Safeties R.J. Mickens and Tyler Venables, two of the team’s top four tacklers, also didn’t travel for the Tigers, who are looking for their 12th consecutive win over the Eagles.

Running back Kobe Pace also didn’t travel.

Meanwhile, Xavier Thomas did travel and could see his first action of the season tonight. The senior defensive end, who had 3.5 sacks and a team-high 17 quarterback pressures a season ago, has been out since injuring his foot during preseason camp.

Corner Malcolm Greene also made the trip after missing Clemson’s win over NC State last week with an undisclosed injury, but it’s yet another game in which the Tigers’ secondary won’t be whole. Jones (stinger) is missing his third straight game while Mickens, who’s started the last three games, will miss his first game of the season despite Swinney saying following last week’s games that the junior was “fine” after sustaining an undisclosed injury in that game.

As for Venables, he finished last week’s game but sported a protective boot on his left foot early this week. Sources tell The Clemson Insider that Venables also sustained minor injuries in a moped accident this week.

Bryan Bresee also didn’t travel, though that was expected. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said earlier in the week that Bresee wouldn’t be available for today’s game. The Tigers’ star defensive tackle also missed last week’s game with a non-football medical issue.

Venables on decision to remain at Clemson: ‘This is my place to stay’

Though the safety is playing under a new defensive coordinator this fall, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tyler Venables never imagined there would be a time during his football career at Clemson where he wouldn’t be coached by his father Brent Venables, so when the opportunity came about for the longtime defensive coordinator to make the move to Oklahoma, the safety had a lot to think about.

“After I had already committed to Clemson, I never thought I’d play for anybody else,” Venables said. “I was like, ‘Alright, I guess I’m playing for my dad’ and it just ended up turning out like it did and it’s been awesome. Just to watch coach Wes [Goodwin] take command, get to really understand his brain and his thinking and he’s actually a really smart dude, so it’s been cool.”

While Venables has enjoyed playing under Clemson’s newest defensive coordinator in Wes Goodwin thus far, he also had a lot to consider following his father’s move to the Sooners. To leave or not to leave was the question and it ultimately came down to the simplicity that surrounded remaining at Clemson.

“I thought about it for a little bit in December, thought that was what I wanted to do briefly, and then I just kind of realized that I like simplicity a lot, simple, its easy,” the South Carolina native said. “Clemson’s an amazing place, so I was like why would I ever want to leave something like this. Even though it was amazing playing for him for two years. It was a great experience and not many people get to do that — get to play for their father on the Division 1 stage — but I had a great two years with him, and this is my place to stay.”

Now with his junior season on the horizon, Venables is excited to jump into another season, but this time under a new coordinator. Though Goodwin differs in many ways from his predecessor, Venables loves the fight and excellence that his coordinator demands from his players — a similar demand for excellence that his father instilled in his 10 years with the Clemson program.

“He still demands excellence from you, and he does a great job of getting fight from his player because we love him,” Venables said. “We love fighting for him and understanding his scheme and he does a great job of explaining stuff to us.”
