Jaguars reunite with long-time OL via practice squad

Jaguars reunite with long-time OL via practice squad

The Jaguars reunited with long-time Jacksonville offensive lineman Tyler Shatley on Tuesday, signing him to their practice squad and releasing offensive lineman Dieter Eiselen from the unit in a corresponding move.

Now in his 11th NFL season, Shatley originally signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in 2014 and remained with the team through this preseason.

Shatley re-signed with Jacksonville on a one-year contract in April but was released during the Jaguars’ preseason roster cuts in August. He revealed earlier that month that he intends to retire from the NFL after this season.

Shatley made 145 regular season appearances with the Jaguars through 2023, the fifth-most in franchise history, including a team-record 140 consecutive games played and 51 starts across the offensive line.

He has logged at least one snap at every offensive line position other than right tackle with Jacksonville.

Shatley started at least eight games yearly between the 2020-22 seasons. He also has made five postseason appearances and two playoff starts with the Jaguars.

Report: Jaguars OL Tyler Shatley schedules NFL retirement

Jaguars offensive lineman Tyler Shatley plans to retire from the NFL following the 2024 season, he told Ryan Green of 1010XL after Jacksonville’s ninth day of training camp Friday.

Shatley re-signed with the Jaguars on a one-year contract in April, marking his return to the club for an 11th season. He joined Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

A versatile interior offensive lineman who plays guard and center, Shatley has played 145 games in his career with the Jaguars — fifth-most in franchise history, behind center Brad Meester (209), wide receiver Jimmy Smith (171), tight end Marcedes Lewis (170) and kicker Josh Scobee (168) — including 51 starts.

Shatley started at least eight games yearly between the 2020-22 seasons.

Jacksonville brought Shatley back for the 2024 campaign as part of the team’s revamped offensive line depth.

The Jaguars added free-agent center Mitch Morse in March, relegating former starting snapper Luke Fortner to a backup role alongside Shatley on the interior.

Jacksonville also picked offensive tackle Javon Foster in the fourth round of April’s 2024 NFL draft.

Jaguars re-sign veteran OL Tyler Shatley

The Jaguars have re-signed veteran interior offensive lineman Tyler Shatley.

The Jaguars announced their re-signing of offensive lineman Tyler Shatley on Friday, bringing the veteran back for an 11th season with the franchise.

The terms of Shatley’s new contract were not made immediately available. He entered NFL free agency in March upon the expiration of his previous two-year deal with the team, which was worth $4.8 million.

Shatley has served as a dependable reserve piece on Jacksonville’s interior offensive line dating back to his undrafted free agent signing with the club in 2014, out of Clemson. He’s appeared in at least one game offensively every season and started since, including seven campaigns with over 300 snaps logged.

In total, Shatley has appeared in 145 games with the Jaguars and holds the franchise record for consecutive appearances with 140. He’s made 51 starts, at center, left and right guard.

Shatley’s re-signing marks another vote of confidence by the Jaguars in their offensive line of 2023, which is largely set to run it back in 2024.

The starting five — Cam Robinson, Ezra Cleveland, Luke Fortner, Brandon Scherff and Anton Harrison, from left to right — remain under contract. Only former Buffalo center and 2024 free agent signee, Mitch Morse, is expected to alter the first-team lineup, projected to replace Fortner.

Jaguars OL Walker Little suffers left knee injury vs. Bills

The Jaguars’ starting left guard Walker Little exited a Week 5 game after suffering a left knee injury.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Walker Little suffered a left leg injury in the first quarter of a Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills. He was able to leave the field under his own power and immediately headed to the locker room.

The Jaguars announced it was a knee problem and ruled him questionable to return.

Little, a second-round pick in 2021, started at left tackle for the first four games of the 2023 season while Cam Robinson was serving a suspension. Upon Robinson’s return to the lineup, Little made his first career start at left guard Sunday.

Through the first four games of the season, Little was the Jaguars’ highest graded offensive lineman on Pro Football Focus and the second highest graded player on the entire offense behind only Trevor Lawrence.

The Jaguars have cycled through a few players at left guard, initially starting Ben Bartch for the first three games of the season. Bartch was benched by the team and replaced in the lineup by Tyler Shatley in Week 4.

Following the departure of Little on Sunday, Shatley was inserted into the lineup.

Tyler Shatley starts at left guard ahead of Ben Bartch in Week 4

The Jaguars tweaked their offensive line Sunday, inserting Tyler Shatley into the starting lineup.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a change to their offensive line Sunday, inserting veteran Tyler Shatley into the starting lineup at left guard ahead of Ben Bartch.

The decision comes after Jaguars coach Doug Pederson all but called Bartch the weak link on the line through the first three weeks.

“[Anton Harrison] is still learning, just getting a feel and a sense of playing at this level and all the different rushes that he’s seeing,” Pederson said Monday. “Ben [Bartch] is still working through getting back into playing and he got beat a few times. I think Luke [Fortner] and Brandon [Scherff] and Walker [Little] are the three consistent guys right now.”

While that set the stage for Shatley to take over starting duties, Bartch was still listed as the first-team left guard on the depth chart all the way up to kickoff Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Bartch suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the 2022 season and was replaced by Shatley who started the last 12 games of the season as well as the Jaguars’ two postseason games.

Jaguars G Brandon Scherff will play Week 2 game against Chiefs

Brandon Scherff is set to take the field against the Chiefs despite a Week 1 ankle sprain.

After suffering an ankle injury against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive guard Brandon Scherff is set to return to the field against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Scherff sustained the injury early in the second half when Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II landed on the back of his ankle. He returned for a few plays before missing the rest of the game.

The veteran lineman didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice, but after practicing in a limited capacity Thursday, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson announced Friday that Scherff is in for Sunday’s home opener.

“I think everybody heals differently; pain tolerance is different for everybody,” Pederson said. “He played at Iowa — tough player. It just goes to show the type of person that he is and how important his teammates are and this team and trying to be available for every game.”

Scherff received an MRI after his injury, which revealed he sustained a sprained ankle and was ruled day-to-day.

Pederson recognized Scherff’s importance to the team as Jacksonville navigated his injury.

“It’s obviously a loss for the offensive line, it’s pretty substantial,” Pederson said Monday. “His leadership with Anton [Harrison] there and the communication they’ve had and the rapport they’ve had since the offseason.”

Pederson was confident in Tyler Shatley’s ability to fill in for the injured Scherff, but Shatley will now be on standby.

Scherff joined the Jaguars on a three-year, $49.5 million contract in the 2022 offseason. He has been a captain in both his seasons in Duval, and has become a mentor for some of the younger players on the roster.

The Chiefs will have Chris Jones available for the first time this season after he signed a new contract with Kansas City. Scherff’s status gives the Jaguars an experienced, proven guard to help fight off the Chiefs’ impressive defensive line that got even scarier with Jones’ return.

5 Jaguars players to watch vs. the Chiefs in Week 2

Here are five Jaguars players to watch in their Week 2 game against the Chiefs:

The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday to move to 1-0 on the season and take hold of the first-place spot in the AFC South. But their Week 2 opponent will almost certainly be more challenging.

The Jaguars will host the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday in a rematch of last season’s divisional-round matchup between the teams.

The Chiefs lost to the Detroit Lions in the first game of the NFL season Sept. 7, but they may have tight end Travis Kelce and defensive lineman Chris Jones — likely the second and third best players on the team — available for the first time this season.

Doug Pederson: Brandon Scherff absence would be ‘pretty substantial’

Doug Pederson says it’ll be a real challenge for the Jaguars offensive line if Brandon Scherff misses time due to his ankle injury.

Jacksonville Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff avoided the worst case scenario Sunday when he suffered an ankle injury in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

According to Jaguars coach Doug Pederson, an MRI revealed that it’s a sprain for Scherff and he said the two-time team captain will be “day-to-day” as he recovers. If the guard can’t play in Week 2 and beyond, Pederson says it’ll present a real challenge for Jacksonville to overcome.

“It’s obviously a loss for the offensive line, it’s pretty substantial,” Pederson said Monday. “Yeah, his leadership with Anton [Harrison] there and the communication they’ve had and the rapport they’ve had since the offseason.

“If he can’t [play], we’re confident [Tyler] Shatley filled in well, veteran guy who knows the system will do the same thing as far as communication goes with Anton and himself. All the confidence in the world that we’ll have the answers there.”

After going down with the injury Sunday, Scherff was helped to the sideline and carted to the locker room. However, he later returned and played a few snaps before exiting the game for good.

Scherff, 31, joined the Jaguars on a three-year, $49.5 million contract in the 2022 offseason and instantly earned captainship in his first season with his new team. Prior to signing in Jacksonville, Scherff was a two-time team captain and five-time Pro Bowler with the Washington Commanders.

While Scherff hasn’t provided the same level of play that he had in Washington, his leadership and steadiness was a factor in Jawaan Taylor putting together a career-best season in 2022 and center Luke Fortner hitting the ground running as a rookie.

Earlier in the 2023 offseason, first-round rookie Anton Harrison credited Scherff with helping him get ready for his first NFL season.

“Playing beside him right now is great, just to lean on him, ask him any questions,” Harrison told the Jaguars.com podcast. “He always says ‘No question is a dumb question.’ So he’s always just helping me out with anything, trying to have me out there playing freely, playing my best.”

Shatley started 12 games at left guard during the 2022 season after Ben Bartch suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Jaguars activate G Ben Bartch from PUP list

Ben Bartch is back on the Jaguars’ active roster 10 months after a knee injury ended his 2022 season.

Jacksonville Jaguars guard Ben Bartch is back on the team’s active roster after beginning training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the team announced Monday.

Bartch, 25, earned the starting left guard job in camp last year, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in October. Veteran Tyler Shatley took over starting duties for the remainder of the season.

With both Bartch and Shatley temporarily out of action in camp, Blake Hance is currently listed as the Jaguars’ starting left guard on the first unofficial depth chart of the year.

Bartch was selected by the Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft and has played multiple spots on the offensive line during his three seasons with the team. Bartch is currently due to become a free agent after the 2023 season.

Jacksonville has two preseason games left before a regular season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 10.

5 takeaways from Jaguars’ first unofficial depth chart

The Jaguars’ first depth chart of the year shows coaches are impressed with rookie Tank Bigsby.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are just a few days from their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys and released an unofficial depth chart ahead of the matchup.

Some of it has been affected by injuries, though. For example, former starting left guard Ben Bartch off the depth chart entirely while on the PUP list. Tyler Shatley took over starting duties last season following Bartch’s season-ending injury, but Shatley is at the bottom of the chart while recovering from an irregular heartbeat.

Still, there are some decisions from the coaching staff that jump off the page in the first depth chart. Here are five takeaways:
