Clemson continues to keep tabs on this talented Class of 2023 wide receiver.

Las Vegas (NV.) Bishop Gorman four-star Zachariah Branch ranks as the No. 6 wide receiver, No. 38 overall prospect regardless of position and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Nevada, per the 247Sports Composite.

Talent runs in the family and if that last name sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

Branch’s older brother, Zion, is a four-star safety recruit in the 2022 class, who has included Clemson in his final five schools.

Zachariah (5-9. 175) is tagging along on his brother’s official visit to Clemson from Nov. 12-14, he recently told The Clemson Insider. The visit coincides with Clemson’s matchup against UConn on Nov. 13, thus the younger Branch brother will be able to take in a game-day experience in Death Valley.

While he hasn’t heard much from Clemson lately, Branch knows that come Sept. 1, he can expect to hear from Tigers’ wide receivers coach, Tyler Grisham.

“He definitely told me that I was the main receiver that he wanted to look at,” Branch said. “He said that if I’m being recruited by Clemson, then it means something because he doesn’t really recruit that many receivers. That really meant a lot coming from him, just knowing that I’m really a primary prospect that they think can contribute to their program.”

That game day visit will be Branch’s first opportunity to meet Grisham in person.

“I’m definitely excited to get to see Coach Grisham out there and just talk to him and build that relationship out there,” he added. See what he’s about. He’s very genuine over the phone, so I mean he seems like a very genuine person, very nice coach.

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Branch is taking a patient approach. He wants to hear what coaches have to offer, weigh out all his options and then hopefully come up with a decision.

Branch told TCI that among the schools that he’s interested in, he’s looking forward to continuing to build a relationship with Clemson and its coaching staff. The programs that are standing out right now, in addition to Clemson? USC, Ohio State, Oregon, Washington, Tennessee and Arizona State.

Additionally, he hopes to get in closer contact with Alabama but made sure to reiterate that same desire for Clemson.

Not everyone has the opportunity that Branch has. He’s been able to use his older brother’s recruitment process as a guiding light for his own.

“Going through his recruiting process is absolutely helping me narrow down my schools as well,” he said. “We’re trying to make the decision together so we can possibly play at the same college.”

That would mean A LOT to Branch.

“Me and my brother have a great relationship and we don’t want to split up,” he added. “If we could both go to the same college, that would be just a blessing.”

What does Branch bring to the table on the field?

He’s a dynamic athlete, who’s an explosive athlete. Branch is also stronger than his stature would suggest.

“I would say that my strengths are route running, being able to read defenses quicker than people my age and blocking,” Branch said.

When asked what players he tries to emulate and take bits and pieces of their game, the first wide receiver he mentioned was DeAndre Hopkins.

It just so happens that he’s being recruited by the same college that helped develop Nuk.

“That just means a lot,” Branch said about being recruited by Clemson. “The receivers who have come out of Clemson in the past, they’re always developing receivers. To know that the coaching staff believes in me and believes that I can be another receiver to come out of their program and be just as great as those who already came out, just means a lot to me.”

Four-star receiver blown away by Clemson visit

Clemson played host this past week to a big-time wide receiver prospect from the state of Texas.

Del Valle High School 2023 four-star wide receiver Braylon James traveled to campus for an unofficial visit and saw all the Tigers have to offer and then some.

On his visit to Tiger Town, James was accompanied by his mother, father and sister. He had an opportunity to do almost everything, except talk to a professor. Everyone in the James family certainly enjoyed themselves, though.

“They really like it there, they want to see what my future holds there,” James told The Clemson Insider.

Clemson exceeded James’s expectations. He knew it was going to be “really cool,” but he didn’t expect to be blown away like he was. The Tigers truly blew it out of the water.

“I really enjoyed everything, I know that’s kind of like cliche, but honestly they did a really good job,” Jame said. “As far as what I enjoyed the most though, it was probably the whole P.A.W. Journey part of the visit.

“Not a lot of people would say that, but that’s something that really stood out to me, as far as internships and player development like mentally and stuff like that. That piece was really cool and something I’ve never seen at any other school. That was definitely something that I took away from the whole entire visit. I’m really looking forward to learning more about that.”

James’s visit up to Clemson also presented him the chance to meet Tyler Grisham for the first time in person. His connection with Clemson’s wide receivers coach made him more than eager to visit.

“It was huge. Over the phone, we had a really good relationship, but just meeting him in person, everything was organic,” James said. “Nothing was really forced. He gave the same energy he gave over the phone. I feel like me and my family, we really just hit it off with him and that’s just something that was really huge in my recruiting process.

“With most coaches, they act one way over the phone and they act differently in person. Just seeing that he acted the same way was really cool and that was also very huge for me. He’s a really great guy, a really good coach. I appreciate him.”

James did hear about a potential offer.

Right before he left, Grisham mentioned to James that he really wanted to offer him. While that offer didn’t come, James didn’t take it personally. He believes the whole staff wants to see more from him, which he views as “respectable.”

He’s looking forward to working towards that Clemson offer.

“It was a really humbling experience,” James said, “Just seeing that everything isn’t given and it’s giving me something to look forward to this season. So, I can go out and earn that offer, potentially making Clemson a huge target on my list for destinations.”

James thinks it more so has to do with how he progresses across this upcoming season and less to do with him working out in front of Clemson’s coaching staff.

“I think they feel like my play really spoke for itself,” he added. “They just wanted to see more on film. They may want me to come back and workout, but I don’t think it’ll come down to that…You never know, but I really think it was a whole film thing. I think they were gonna come down to watch us play against Westlake. Coach Swinney was kind of talking about that in the brief conversation that we had.”

Westlake, of course, is Cade Klubnik’s high school. The five-star quarterback and Clemson Class of 2022 commit has become closer with James over the past year or so. Those Austin roots run deep and Grisham will likely come down to watch the Tigers’ future quarterback and potentially a future target of his.

In addition to Grisham, James also got his first chance to meet Dabo Swinney.

“As far as offering, he wasn’t really talking about that,” James said. “He was just talking about his experience at Clemson…and also the whole family piece. He’s always relating back to that. He was also talking about how he likes to have a lot of his alumni on the coaching staff. That was really huge.”

James is unsure of a specific date, but he ensured that he’s “definitely coming back to Clemson” for a game this upcoming season.

“Clemson was a really nice spot and it’s something that I definitely want to see again,” he added.

As far as his recruitment currently stands, James is taking a patient approach. He’s waiting until Sept. 1, when coaches can finally start contacting him and communication can be a two-way street.

James mentioned Stanford, Cal and Texas A&M as schools that are really doing a good job of recruiting him and making the effort to reach out.

He didn’t want to leave Clemson out either, giving Grisham his due.

“I want to say that Coach Grisham is doing the same thing as well,” James said. “That’s why Clemson is pretty high on my list. Even though I don’t have an offer from there, Coach Grisham is making it a priority to build a relationship with me and my family, so that’s really cool.”

Clemson picked up another verbal commitment on Wednesday night.

Laurens (S.C.) 2022 athlete Michael Mankaka announced his commitment to the Tigers on social media.

Mankaka received a preferred walk-on offer from Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham on Wednesday evening. Mankaka pledged his commitment to the Tigers nearly 10 minutes later.

For Laurens High School, Mankaka plays wide receiver, cornerback and free safety.

Will Georgia reporter make the same mistake as Auburn’s?

Moments before Clemson was set to open the 2016 season at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium, an Auburn reporter walked up to then Tigers’ wide receiver Mike Williams and began asking him questions.

At the time, Williams was in the middle of warmups.

“He asked him questions about ‘How are you feeling mentally right now about your neck?’” recalled Tyler Grisham, who was an offensive analyst on Clemson’s staff at the time.

The incident made Grisham mad. The Auburn game was Williams’ first time back since suffering a serious neck injury the year before when he ran into the goal post in the Wofford game and fractured his neck.

“Afterwards, I ended up speaking with this reporter and saying that was not appropriate,” Grisham said. “That was rude. He does not need to have those thoughts in his mind.”

But Grisham soon found out, the incident to not bother Williams at all. In fact, it might have helped. The Clemson receiver dominated Auburn that evening on the plains, as he caught nine passes for 174 yards in Clemson’s 19-13 victory.

“You turn around and you watch his game against Auburn, he played so well,” Clemson’s wide receivers coach said. “He had a lot of conversion throws down the field. Back-shoulder throws from (Deshaun Watson). So, he played well.

“So, even fielding a question like that, clearly he had done the work and he prepared his mind to be successful. Because, for me, I am sitting here thinking, ‘Oh Gosh! Having to answer a question like that.’ But man, he put the work in during the off-season to say, ‘You know what? I have done all I can. If something happens, I can at least have the satisfaction knowing I have done all I can do.”

Williams went on to have an All-ACC season for the Tigers on their run to the national championship, catching a team-best 98 passes for a team-high 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was later picked by the Los Angeles Chargers with the No. 7 overall pick in the first-round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Grisham and the Tigers are hopeful, when he is cleared to play, Justyn Ross will have a similar kind of season this coming year. Ross missed all of last season due to a congenital spinal issue which required surgery in June of 2020. The health issue jeopardized the future playing career of the 2019 All-ACC wide receiver.

Ross was eventually cleared last season to participate in non-contact drills which carried over to the spring. He now is awaiting the all-go from Clemson on full contact. When he does come back, Grisham is hopeful Ross will come back and have the same kind of success Williams did in 2016.

“He has that example and, hopefully, we have a similar result this year with Ross,” Grisham said.

Maybe a Georgia reporter will approach Ross in a similar fashion the way the Auburn reporter did Williams just moment before the game. And maybe Ross will respond by producing similar numbers.

Greene feels orange carpet treatment during All In cookout

Clemson laid out the orange carpet for some of its top targets in the 2022 class during Sunday’s All In Cookout. One of those top targets is Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star wide receiver Andre Greene, Jr., who was on campus for Sunday’s festivities.

It was Greene’s second time on campus this summer. He made an earlier visit to Clemson last month for a session of Dabo Swinney Camp, where he worked out for the Tigers’ head coach and ultimately received an official scholarship offer.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and Greene (6-3, 175) had an opportunity to get some more face time with Swinney, Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham and some fellow recruits.

“The Cookout was great,” Greene told The Clemson Insider. “I really enjoyed spending time with Coach Swinney, Coach Grisham and the other players. It was a lot of events that allowed me to get to know and spend time with the coaches and players.”

Greene was headed back home to Virginia and ready to take a nap in the car when Swinney called him and invited him over to his home. It ended up being his favorite part of his trip down to Clemson.

“I would say the highlight of the day was going to Coach Swinney’s house after the cookout,” he said. “Some of the other players and I spent the majority of time in the pool, playing water basketball.”

Greene spent a lot of his time enjoying himself, but there were also some important conversations that needed to be had with the coaching staff. Clemson remains very interested in adding him to a wide receiver room that already includes Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 2022 four-star Adam Randall.

“Coach Swinney and Coach Grisham’s message was, ‘They want me,’” Greene said. “Coach Swinney told me before I left that he had seen a lot of great receivers and I’m one of the special ones that’s going to be great wherever I go. But said, if I come to Clemson I’m going to be great AND I’m going to win a National Championship.”

It remains to be seen if that message resonates with Greene, but it’s clear that Clemson had that family feel he’s been looking for in the schools he’s currently being recruited by.

Greene indicated to TCI that he would like to make a decision this fall, so another Clemson visit could certainly be in the cards.

While Clemson’s Class of 2022 commits made sure to put on their recruiter hats this weekend for the talented Virginia wide receiver, it never felt like that to Greene.

“I did spend a lot of time with some other commits, including Cade [Klubnik],” he said. “It didn’t feel like they were recruiting me, just a bunch of us having time to have fun and be kids again.”

Grisham’s seen a complete 180 from Ajou

Ajou Ajou is looking to separate himself from a developmental standpoint as he enters his second season with Clemson.

While he’s still learning, the Canada native has an enormous amount of potential.

From a physical standpoint, he was up to 230 pounds eat one point this offseason, but according to Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham, Ajou is likely closer to 210 now.

“I saw him the other day and he looked more chiseled,” Grisham said during last week’s media availability. “I want to say ‘thinner,’ but I don’t think any athlete wants to be called ‘thin.’ But, he looked really good.

“For him, he can carry 235, but at 210-215, he can be able to have that stamina that you want at wide receiver. We want to be in the most shape group on the field. He can run a go-route, come right back and run another one. For him, that’s going to be important to have the conditioning to stay on the field and not come off.”

Grisham reiterated that Ajou looks great physically and he’s really excited to see where he’s at come fall camp.

Ajou continues to make big strides, this comes after an impressive Spring Game performance in which he hauled in six passes for 102 yards, which included a 16-yard touchdown reception.

Grisham is impressed with what he’s been able to see out of Ajou this far, which has practically been night and day.

“Really just a 180, he surprised himself, I think even,” Grisham said when asked what he’s seen from Ajou through the spring. “I’ve always told him: ‘Hey man, you’re a phenomenal, phenomenal athlete. You have just God-given ability and talent that just oozes from you. Let’s take all that talent and let’s really focus on those details. You’ve always been the best that can jump and jump over somebody and catch it and run fast.’ But, at this level, you can’t get away with just being a great athlete, you have to be a technician.

“He’s been able to do that. He’s worked really hard on his breakpoints, he’s worked really hard on his flexibility, his fluidity, in and out of his breaks. Even his stance is starked. When the ball’s snapped, he had so many false movements when the ball was snapped, so trying to tighten that up and make him more efficient and it’s shown.”

As Grisham alluded to before, that discipline was on display during Clemson’s Spring Game. According to Grisham, it’s easy to tell when he’s playing with confidence and understanding the playbook. The Tigers had stuck Ajou at one position to create that confidence and they now have him playing more of the boundary and the field side.

That confidence potentially stems from Ajou’s commitment to the classroom.

“Off the field, he’s done well,” Grisham said. “He’s committed more academically. That’s a thing for our guys to understand. You’re not in the NFL, you are a scholar-athlete. If you can focus off the field and really how you do anything is how you do everything. Let’s focus on being great academically, let’s focus on being accountable in these areas. That’s going to transfer to the field and you saw that.

“I think that light went off, ‘You’re right coach, I’ve done so much better in these areas and it’s showing up on the field.’ So he’s excited, heading into this fall.”

One of nation’s top WRs says Clemson offer would impact recruitment ‘a lot’

Per usual, Clemson continues to pursue only the best of the best at the wide receiver position, and as such, the Tigers have only offered a couple of wideouts in the 2023 class to date.

But one candidate to eventually earn an offer from Clemson is Noah Rogers, one of the nation’s most talented young receivers.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound rising junior from Rolesville (N.C.) High School is ranked as high as the No. 50 prospect in the country for the 2023 class regardless of position by ESPN, which considers him the No. 11 wideout in the class.

Clemson’s staff liked what it saw from Rogers when he competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp last month, and he has been in touch with receivers coach Tyler Grisham since he was on campus.

“I heard from him about two weeks ago,” Rogers told The Clemson Insider. “We were just catching up since camp because the coaches have been going at it for a while. He was telling me he appreciates me coming up and him getting to coach me and that he thinks that I’m a receiver that could play for Clemson, and Coach Swinney thinks I’m a guy that can play for him in the future.”

Rogers put all he had into his Swinney Camp workout and left Clemson equipped with tips from the coaches that he plans to implement into his game this season.

“I came to camp and gave all my undivided attention and gave them what I got and showed them what I can do,” Rogers said, “and use everything that they’re teaching me that I can come back home and use for a game.”

Understanding how selective the Tigers are with the prospects they recruit, especially at the receiver position, Rogers appreciates the fact he is on Clemson’s recruiting radar.

“It means a lot because not a lot of people can get this opportunity to get recruited or just get recruited by Clemson,” he said. “That’s a national championship team. So, it means that I’m going in the right direction.”

Rodgers holds nearly 20 scholarship offers from schools such as North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, South Carolina, Kentucky and Oregon, to name some. He is looking to start narrowing things down in his recruitment in December or January.

Along with Clemson, Rogers has made visits to UNC, NC State, Wake Forest and Duke this summer. He said he isn’t sure but may return to Clemson for a game this fall.

Based on his camp performance and the feedback he’s received from the Tigers, Rogers feels good about his chances of scoring an offer from them moving forward and says the offer would significantly impact his recruitment.

“It would affect it a lot because I like the direction that Clemson’s going to and what they could do for me,” he said. “So, I think it would do a lot for me in my recruitment and for me, and I think I have a big chance for them.”

Rogers helped lead Rolesville High to a 9-0 record and appearance in the North Carolina 4AA state championship last season while recording 26 receptions for 591 yards and nine touchdowns.

Grisham using former Clemson WR as benchmark for Ross’s return

Tyler Grisham keeps coming back to a former wide receiver as a benchmark for Justyn Ross’s impending return.

Clemson’s wide receivers coach didn’t have an exact update for when Ross will be cleared for contact. Instead, he spent Tuesday’s media session lauding the star wideout’s leadership skills and how hard he’s been working to get back into the mix of things.

Grisham has already prepared Ross for some mental hurdles that will likely come across along the way.

This isn’t new territory for Grisham, though.

He experienced a similar pattern of events with former Clemson and current Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams.

Williams fractured his neck, which caused him to miss nearly the entire 2015 season. His first game back was against Auburn on Sept. 3, 2016. He hauled in nine receptions for 174 receiving yards in a 19-13 Clemson victory.

Grisham indicated that Williams “played well.”

“Once you take the first hit, you just move on,” Grisham said. “You play football. From that point on, what’s my alignment, assignment? Just execute. That’s what we’re going to train [Ross] to do this fall camp. He’ll take some hits in fall camp, that’s part of it. I think that’ll be good for him to kind of get that out of him, heading into our first game.

Grisham wants the All-ACC wideout to operate like normal and prepare like he’ll be suited up against Georgia on Sept. 4.

“He’s ready to go,” Grisham said. “I believe when he gets that word that he is cleared. He’s going to be ready to go and be confident and able to help us.”

He’s emphasized that Ross can’t have those negative thoughts going into it.

“If you’re fearful, you’re not going to play to your standards,” Grisham said. “You want to put your best self on tape. If you are fearful about further injuring yourself, you’re just not going to perform.”

The hope is that Ross will come back stronger than before. Grisham expects him to not miss a beat.

“Take that first hit, brush it off and let’s go,” he said.
