‘The sky is the limit’: Clemson coaches high on Williams to have sophomore surge

There are high expectations for this sophomore wide receiver, with WR coach Tyler Grisham seeing some similarities to Hunter Renfrow.

Antonio Williams led Clemson in receptions and receiving yards as a freshman last year, but his coaches think he still has plenty of room to grow.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Clemson coaches raved about Williams, who is entering his sophomore campaign this fall.

One of the coaches that spoke highly of Williams was Garrett Riley, who is entering his first season as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator.

“I know he’s gotten faster,” Riley said of Williams. “The guy is physically in a better place than where he’s been at. The sky is the limit for him. He was really, really good for us, really productive this spring. I thought he was consistent the whole way through, but I think physically, and probably his confidence level is growing; he’s a confident kid anyway. The guy has made a lot of plays here already, but he’s going to continue to make a lot more for us.”

Head coach Dabo Swinney had similar praise for the former four-star recruit.

“Physically, he’s in a different place. He’s mentally in a different place,” Swinney said. “He has a different understanding. I thought he hit a wall a little bit last year, and then he kind of came on and found himself again… it’s amazing how far he’s developed. I mean, you look at him; he’s thicker, he’s bigger, faster and stronger. And that’s what should happen if you’re putting the work in.”

Williams’ position coach, Tyler Grisham, added that he reminds him of Hunter Renfrow with the way Williams stays calm and even-keeled.

As the Tigers’ primary slot receiver, Williams finished 2022 with 56 receptions for 604 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned 15 punts for an average of 8.6 yards per return.

With the way the coaches are praising him, Williams could be in store for a breakout sophomore season this fall.

Clemson showing interest in standout in-state WR, son of former Tiger signee

Clemson is showing interest in this in-state standout who has seen his recruitment take off of late.

Aiken (S.C.) High School wide receiver Braylon Staley, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior in the class of 2024, has been in contact with Tigers receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“I spoke with the WR coach, Coach Grisham from Clemson,” Staley told The Clemson Insider recently. “We discussed how he was impressed with my film this season.”

Staley – who has picked up more than a half dozen Division I FBS offers since late October, including a few ACC offers – put a strong junior campaign on tape.

“Personally, I think my season went well,” he said. “My head coach (Olajuwon Paige) put me in a position where I was able to catch a few balls for 900 yards and eight touchdowns.”

Aiken (S.C.) High School 2024 wide receiver Braylon Staley (photo courtesy of @BrayStaley on Twitter)

Staley is the son of former Clemson signee and Mississippi State defensive back Brian Staley, and although they haven’t talked a whole lot about Clemson, Braylon has heard good things about it from his father.

“My dad was a signee but ended up going to Mississippi State due to being one credit short to enroll,” Braylon said. “So, we haven’t had conversations that much. He has expressed that it is a great place and the environment is second to none there.”

Braylon gave his overall thoughts on Dabo Swinney’s team, based on what he’s seen through the television screen.

“I think Coach Dabo’s system is great,” he said. “He puts his players in position to make plays and to be successful in his offense from what I’ve watched on TV.”

Braylon has yet to attend a game at Clemson, though it sounds like that may change soon.

“I’ve never been to Death Valley,” he said, “but we are in the process of scheduling an invite for their last home game (vs. South Carolina on Nov. 26).”

Boston College gave Braylon his first offer on Oct. 26. Since then, he has seen his recruitment continue to gain steam while collecting offers from Virginia Tech, Miami, Wake Forest, Coastal Carolina, Middle Tennessee, East Carolina and James Madison.

Braylon visited Wake Forest last Saturday, and along with the Demon Deacons, he named South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Duke, West Virginia and Appalachian State as other schools showing interest in addition to Clemson.

“I would describe myself as being explosive with great hands!” he said regarding what he feels he can bring to the table for a college team as a receiver. “I would bring a go-getter mindset! Hard-working attitude and intelligence of the game.”

What a day it was for wide receiver Antonio Williams.

In Clemson’s latest 31-16 win over Louisville, the freshman put together the best performance of his Clemson career, leading the way for Tyler Grisham’s wide receiver room on Saturday.

Williams came in clutch on the first drive of the matchup with a big deep ball grab and never looked back, finishing the day with an impressive 10 receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown, besting his previous career highs of five receptions and 76 yards receiving in a single game.

Williams’ career day came at a time when the Tigers needed it most. Following the loss to Notre Dame in South Bend where Clemson’s offense struggled to gain momentum and move the sticks, the Tigers were in need of an offensive difference maker versus Louisville — a role Williams was more than ready to fill.

Highlighted by his third career touchdown — a 4-yard reception in the second quarter — Williams proved that he could provide the explosiveness that both Clemson’s offense and the Tigers’ wide receiver core were missing en route to the win.

Despite Williams having a small hiccup in the third quarter with an unlucky fumble, the South Carolina native left today’s matchup as Clemson’s leading receiver on the season with 43 receptions for 473 yards and three receiving touchdowns.

Standout Peach State WR staying in touch with Grisham

The Clemson Insider caught up with this standout Peach State receiver that’s on the Tigers’ recruiting radar.

Johns Creek (Ga.) High School’s Kyle Vaka – a 6-foot, 170-pound junior in the 2024 class – has been keeping in contact periodically with Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“Me and Coach Grisham stay in touch from time to time. I think I texted with him last week,” Vaka told TCI recently. “I texted with him. I let him know I was watching – I think it was the NC State game – so, seeing those guys ball out, and I like to text him and let him know I’ve been watching their receivers and seeing them ball out, sending him some of my tape, and he appreciates it. He encourages me, and I appreciate staying in touch with him.”

Vaka has traveled to Tiger Town a bunch of times. He made his way to campus for a couple of games last season, went to this year’s spring game in April and participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer for the second year in a row – not to mention a couple of other trips he has made to visit his sister, who actually attends Clemson.

Most recently, Vaka made an unofficial visit to Clemson for the Louisiana Tech game on Sept. 17, and he is looking to return to campus multiple times in the offseason.

“Going to make it up for spring game hopefully,” he said. “Definitely going to be camping there, and I really look forward to my relationship with Clemson and Coach Grisham and how that grows.”

Along with Clemson, Vaka is getting interest from Vanderbilt, SMU, Rice and William & Mary. He visited Vanderbilt in September, went to Rice two weekends ago, SMU this past weekend and plans to see William & Mary and Vanderbilt again over the next couple of weekends.

“I’m just keeping in touch with those schools and putting my explosive plays on film and just controlling what I can control,” he said.

Vaka just wrapped up a strong junior campaign and finished it with a bang on Oct. 28, when he posted seven receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns (75 and 80 yards).

Entering that game, Vaka had tallied 30 catches for 493 yards and three touchdowns on the season while logging 11 explosive plays of 20-plus yards.

Vaka, who also returned punts and kickoffs for his team this season, has been invited to the Georgia Elite Classic, the state’s premier All-Star game.

“The season as a team, it’s been a little bit of a struggle, losing a ton of seniors, a whole new coaching staff came in,” he said. “So, myself, I’m just trying to control what I can control. I’ve been grateful to put a ton of explosive plays on tape.”

Ideally, Vaka would like to have his recruitment wrapped up heading into his senior season next year, but he’s just playing things by ear as the recruiting process progresses.

Right now, his sights are simply set on working as hard as possible this offseason.

“I know I’m going to run track and train as hard as I can, put on muscle and weight and control what I can control in terms of how hard I work,” he said. “I know that God will take care of the rest and the offers and all that will come in due time, and I’m just going to put my head down and work.”

‘It’s just different’: Rising Virginia wideout talks ‘one of the best visits’ to Clemson

One of Clemson’s top receiver targets in the 2024 recruiting class returned to Tiger Town last weekend.

King George (Va.) three-star Mekhai White was accompanied by his father and brother, as he made his way to campus for Clemson’s 30-20 victory over NC State at Death Valley on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“It was an amazing experience. It was great,” White told The Clemson Insider regarding his visit. “The coaching staff was great. The atmosphere was great. Just the people inside the facility make it so special.”

“It was a great experience,” he said regarding the atmosphere in Death Valley. “A lot of fans are screaming, yelling — they’re really passionate. They show a lot of love to the football team down there.”

Speaking of showing love, White had a chance to chop it up with Tyler Grisham. White said that he had a “great conversation” with Clemson’s wide receivers coach, as they got to know each other a little bit more. White also indicated that Grisham is exactly the same in person as he is over the phone.

“We didn’t talk much about recruiting, but he said that he would keep in touch with me and that he’s really interested in me,” White said regarding his conversation with Grisham. “We’re just building a relationship.”

White feels like his relationship with Grisham improved now that he was finally able to make his way down to Clemson.

What stood out about White’s first trip to Tiger Town?

“Just the culture down there, how they run things and things like that,” he said. “Clemson is just different from other schools. It’s just different.”

“Man, one of the best visits I’ve been on so far,” White added.

Those sentiments were echoed by his family members.

“They loved it,” he said. “They said the same thing, it’s just different. The whole environment and everything is just different down there.

This Saturday, Oct. 15, White will be at the University of Tennessee. He’s also hoping to visit Georgia, and Auburn and hopefully schedule more visits before the end of the season.

White doesn’t envision that he’ll be back at Clemson in 2022 but said that he “definitely” needs to get back down there following the season.

“I gotta go back down there,” White said. “I love that place.”

Nearby receiver talks ‘special’ Clemson visit

A local receiver prospect in the 2023 recruiting class returned to Tiger Town last weekend.

After participating in the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer, Central (S.C.) D W Daniel’s Jaylen Brown-Wallce was back on campus for the Tigers’ 30-20 victory over NC State at Death Valley on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“My time at Clemson was amazing,” Brown-Wallace told The Clemson Insider in a message. “It was an overall crazy environment to be in.”

Did anything about Clemson’s game day atmosphere stand out to Brown-Wallace?

“It played a big part in what made the visit so special,” he said. “Just seeing how crazy the atmosphere can get and how great the fans are.”

During his time on campus, Brown-Wallace had a chance to catch up and communicate with Tyler Grisham. Clemson’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator has been in constant contact with the talented in-state receiver.

“I did talk to him,” Brown-Wallace said of Grisham. “He told me he’s watched my film and how he loves it and how I’m having such a great season so far. Just stuff like how good of a player I am. He told me to come back for another game. I told him I’ll be back.”

If Clemson were to pull the trigger on a scholarship offer, what would that mean for Brown-Wallace and his recruitment?

“It would mean a lot knowing that I grew up around Clemson,” he said.

While on campus, Brown-Wallace had a chance to catch up with some of his former Daniel teammates Clay Swinney, Jahiem Lawson, Trent Pearman, Jackson Crosby, Brodey Conn and Boston Miller. He said it was good to chop it up with those particular guys since they are the ones he’s closest with.

Local product reacts to offer from Clemson

Misun Kelley was surprised when he saw that he had an incoming call from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on Friday morning.

It’s not unusual for Clemson’s head man to give the three-star athlete out of nearby Central (S.C.) D. W. Daniel High School, a phone call. Kelley, who recently walked back his pledge from Virginia Tech, knew that the offer was coming, but he was surprised that it came Friday.

“Swinney had called me and told me that I had been balling on the field,” Kelley told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Friday afternoon. “He said that they were ready to 100% offer me. I’ve been talking to (wide receivers coach Tyler) Grisham and (defensive coordinator Wesley) Goodwin too a lot.”

Clemson offered Kelley as an athlete. According to Kelley, the Tigers see him as an electric, versatile weapon that can return punts, shut down opposing receivers or score touchdowns.

“It feels pretty good,” he said of receiving an offer from Clemson, “but honestly any offer feels pretty good. It feels the same as any offer.”

Kelley has developed a close relationship with both Grisham and Goodwin, which he said has come about more recently.

He went into more detail on his decision to decommit from Virginia Tech on Thursday.

“I wanted to see more schools,” Kelley said. “I know they need me, which I could commit back to, but I just wanted to see other places before I make a final decision.”

In addition to Clemson, Kelley mentions schools like Virginia Tech, James Madison, Maryland, Oklahoma and Florida as those currently involved in his recruitment. He’ll be taking an official visit to James Madison in the near future and also plans to pay visits to both Oklahoma and Florida.

Kelley will be unofficially visiting Clemson on Oct. 22 for the Syracuse game. While Kelley plans on taking an official visit to Clemson, he said that it’s still something that he’ll need to set up with the coaching staff.

Now that Kelley has an offer in hand from the Tigers, he stated that Clemson is a top team in his recruitment, behind that of Virginia Tech and Okhaoma. These upcoming visits will ultimately be a crucial determining factor in his college decision.

“If I go to Clemson, I want to be able to play, which I know I’ll be able to play off the bat,” Kelley said when asked regarding what he’s looking for in a school at the next level. “Just stuff like that. I want to go to a school that I can really play at and they can offer me the best.”

As far as a decision timeline is concerned, Kelley is hoping to render one prior to December.

Clemson continues to make strong impression with 4-star Peach State wideout

One of Clemson’s top receiver targets in the 2024  recruiting class returned to Tiger Town last weekend.

After attending Clemson’s game against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 17, Cass (Cartersville, Ga.) four-star Sacovie White was back on campus for the Tigers’ 30-20 victory over NC State at Death Valley on Saturday night.

“It was exciting,” White told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview this week. “I got to go up there with a big group of family, not just my mom and my sister. We got to experience what it would feel like if I was to go to that school and play.”

“It was a great atmosphere,” he continued. “It was another night game. The fans were pumped. The coaches were pumped. The players are always pumped. As a kid that could have a chance to play there, it was really exciting.”

White came to the La. Tech game with his mother and sister but was accompanied by a much larger contingent of family members this time around.

He called it a “blessing” to be surrounded by family members this past weekend because he knows that they have his best interest at all times and they’ll not only support him but give him feedback about the schools that they collectively look at.

“Going to see Clemson, everyone’s dream is to go look at a big school like that,” White said. “So, me being one of the few kids in the country to be able to go with my family is awesome.”

Speaking of family, White was introduced to Tyler Grisham’s family. He is really starting to get a feel for Clemson’s wide receivers coach as they improve their relationship and learn more about one another.

“He texts me all the time,” White said when asked about his relationship with Grisham. “I text him about a lot of different things. We have a great relationship now. I know more about him. He knows more about me. That right there is what’s key…that player-coach (relationship) is that main thing you need to win games, to be successful, to do anything.”

Now that White has paid multiple visits to Clemson’s campus, he feels like he’s put himself in a good position to earn an offer from the Tigers.

“They’ve talked to me more than they did the first time about offering me,” he explained. “It just shows that I’m one of a kind. Clemson only offers so many kids and they only offer the kids that they think is gonna make them better in many different ways. For them to show interest in me, taking a chance and throwing a shot at me, is really a blessing.”

Nearly half of Clemson’s class of 2023 commits hail from the Peach State. Seeing the Tigers prioritize recruiting the state of Georgia in consecutive classes is certainly something that White, a Peach State native himself, is keeping an eye on.

“That means that all the top kids that are in Georgia right now in ‘24 and ‘23, they’re starting to go to Clemson,” White said. “So, that means there’s something there that they really like. That’s why I really go and check out Clemson. Because if all these kids are going, they really see something in Clemson, so I’m gonna see if I might see something I like in that school.”

As far as other gameday visits go, White is planning on going back up to Athens this weekend for the Auburn-Georgia game. White also said that he would like to pay Auburn a visit and he thinks that he might end up visiting Texas A&M as well.

Clemson made Tar Heel State receiver feel like a priority during visit

The wide receiver prospect who collected Clemson’s first offer at his position, when the Tigers began dispensing offers to class of 2024 recruits, was in attendance at Memorial Stadium for the NC State game last Saturday.

Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.) four-star Alex Taylor made the trip to Tiger Town over the weekend with his father and godfather.

“Man, the atmosphere was amazing,” Taylor told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview. “I don’t know how much people went there, but it was super loud. Watching the team run down the hill, we was like right next to them. That was super exciting as well. I got to talk to Coach Swinney and Coach Grisham. It was a good day.”

“Definitely the crowd,” he said regarding what stood out about the atmosphere in Death Valley. “The crowd was super loud. If it wasn’t sold out, it was close to being sold out. All the seats were packed out. It was just a super loud atmosphere and very fun to be in.”

While on campus, Taylor spent plenty of time with receivers coach Tyler Grisham, as well as Dabo Swinney.

What did it mean for Taylor to get a chance to speak with Clemson’s head coach?

“It was super exciting,” Taylor said. “Growing up, seeing him as one of the Hall of Fame coaches and Clemson being a prestigious school, I was super excited to talk to him for a little bit. Just telling me that I’m one of the only 2024s they’ve offered. They’ve only offered me and Jonathan Paylor. So, that’s super exciting as well, just knowing that I’m on their radar and one of the priorities.”

As for Grisham, Taylor said that he couldn’t really say all that they talked about because it was a lot. They talked for over an hour as Taylor made sure to get down to Clemson on the earlier side.

“We was just talking about a lot of things,” Taylor recalled. “He made me feel like a priority. I kind of toured the campus with (former Clemson receiver and current graduate assistant) Artavis Scott. That was pretty exciting too, talking with him as well since he used to play there about four years ago. Speaking with him about how the recruiting process went with him and how he likes Clemson, now that he’s back with the coaching staff.”

While Taylor felt welcomed by the coaching staff, he was also in the presence of someone he’s become rather close with during the recruiting process. Taylor and Paylor, a four-star receiver out of Burlington (N.C.) Hugh M. Cummings High School made plans to attend the NC State game together and sat with one another during last Saturday’s contest.

“It was super exciting, just me and him being from the 336 area code,” Taylor said. “We’re not too far away for him. Just putting on for N.C. is just super exciting for us…Being at the game with him and just having a lot of fun and really just sharing the recruiting process with him as well.”

Being a receiver himself, Taylor keyed in on the production that Clemson is getting out of that position. He said that he really liked offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter’s playcalling and how Clemson utilizes its receivers in its offense.

“First few weeks the offense started a little slow, but D.J.’s (Uiagalelei) is getting comfortable and the receivers are playing well,” Taylor said. “Antonio Williams, true freshman, he kind of broke out on the scene. I’ve talked to Adam Randall a little bit already and just him coming back…They give their receivers chances to make big plays just on that slant and go.”

While Grisham hasn’t yet told Taylor how Clemson would plan on using him at the next level, he said that when they get the chance, they’re gonna break down film and take a deep dive into the offense.

Taylor imagines that’ll likely come after the season. Though, he’s trying to get to either the Miami game on Nov. 19 or the South Carolina game on Nov. 26.

Now that he got to experience his first gameday in The Valley, where does Clemson currently stand in Taylor’s recruitment?

“I don’t really have a list right now, but definitely one of my top schools,” he said.

As far as his current recruitment is concerned, Taylor said that he’ll drop an offers and interest list after the season. Then, he’ll cut that down to about 10-12 teams in the spring and likely render a college decision next summer

In addition to Clemson, Taylor says that schools like Virginia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Michigan State and Florida State, have been coming after him the hardest Since Sept. 1, when college coaches could begin directly contacting juniors in the class of 2024 like himself.

‘If we don’t win that game, I’m probably not here’

Clemson’s pending trip to Boston College has plenty of memories flooding back to Dabo Swinney’s mind, including one particular game the Tigers’ coach believes started all of this.

“If we don’t win that game, I’m probably not here,” Swinney said Tuesday.

The date was Nov. 1, 2008, and Swinney was Clemson’s interim coach at the time. It was just his second game in charge following Tommy Bowden’s midseason firing, and Clemson had lost the first one, a 21-17 setback to Georgia Tech that ran the Tigers’ record to 3-4 and their losing streak to three games..

Swinney and his team had an open date to try to get things figured out before traveling to Chestnut Hill to square off against Boston College. The start was a good one for Clemson, which scored the first 17 points, but the Eagles answered with the first 21 points of the second half to take their first lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Running back C.J. Spiller came through with a timely lift, returning the ensuing kickoff 64 yards to set Clemson’s offense up inside the red zone. The Tigers were in the end zone four plays later on Cullen Harper’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Kelly.

Clemson added a field goal on its next possession to push its lead to 27-21, a score that stuck until the end. The victory propelled the Tigers to four wins in its last six games that season, and  Swinney was named the permanent head coach that December.

“It doesn’t get any bigger than that first one,” Swinney said. “That was a huge, huge win for us, especially how we won. For that team in particular, it just needed something good to happen. How we had lost to Georgia Tech in that first one and then the open date and all that was going on. That was huge for that team. It kind of helped us and solidified what we were trying to do down the stretch.”

Since then, Swinney has vaulted Clemson’s program into elite status in the realm of college football. The Tigers have shared or outright won nine ACC Atlantic Division titles as well as seven conference championships and have made six College Football Playoff appearances. Swinney is one of just two active FBS head coaches (Alabama’s Nick Saban) with multiple national championships.

Swinney points to that Boston College game 14 years ago as the catalyst for it all. A handful of players who contributed to that win are now on Swinney’s staff, including Spiller and receivers coach Tyler Grisham. Swinney said he still has a photo from a celebratory locker room that night.

“They’re all big, but you just don’t realize how big they are until later on down the road,” Swinney said. “It was just one game, but it was what that team needed to be able to rally, stay the course and create the type of belief that we needed to have a good finish.

“That’s one I’ll never forget.”
