Former Packers S Tyler Coyle signs with Browns

Former Packers S Tyler Coyle signed with the Browns and played in the team’s preseason clash with the Vikings on Saturday.

Former Green Bay Packers safety Tyler Coyle, who was released by the team as part of a series of roster moves on Wednesday, signed with the Cleveland Browns on Friday.

Coyle, 25, was released to make room for running back Nate McCrary and linebacker Chris Russell, who were signed when injuries hit the two positions this week.

Coyle was actually on the field for the Packers against the Browns in the preseason opener. He played 14 snaps, producing two tackles and a hurry. He also missed a tackle.

The turnaround time was quick for Coyle, who played eight snaps for the Browns during Saturday’s preseason clash with the Minnesota Vikings. He produced one stop and was Cleveland’s highest-graded defensive player at Pro Football Focus.

Coyle ended up playing back-to-back preseason games at Cleveland Browns Stadium: One as a member of the Packers, and another with the Browns. Cleveland lost both games.

Coyle went undrafted out of Purdue in 2023. He spent time on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie before signing a futures deal with the Packers in January.

Browns workout five others in addition to Erik Harris during Steelers week

The Browns had six in for workouts on Friday.

This is standard procedure for the Cleveland Browns to bring in multiple players per week for a workout. They have done it every year under the era of general manager Andrew Berry. Yesterday it was reported that veteran safety Erik Harris was in town for a workout, but it turns out five others were as well as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Last year, players like safety Mike Brown and Chester Rodgers were signed by the Browns after successful workouts in Cleveland. Brown is now on the 53-man roster of the Tennessee Titans as he was a gameday elevation three times for the Browns in 2022 as a special teamer. The team could be looking for more surprises like Brown this year to stash on their practice squad this season.

Here is the full list of players the Browns had in the building for a workout on Friday as they could be looking to churn their practice squad a bit.

Cowboys officially activate DeMarcus Lawrence, elevate S Tyler Coyle vs Saints

As Cowboys fans have been expecting all week, the Tank is ready to roll once again on defense. And a fresh face with upside is set to make his NFL debut.

The team has officially activated edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence from injured reserve, meaning he will suit up and play tonight against the Saints. Lawrence logged a combined five tackles and a forced fumble in the season opener versus Tampa Bay, but then suffered a foot fracture during practice  prior to Week 2.

Now recovered fully from surgery to repair the break, Lawrence looks to bolster a defense that comes in having allowed more than four yards per rush in six consecutive games.

“Lawrence has had a good week,” team owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan. “My goodness, what a difference a player like that can make. He’ll, of course, have to get his game once he gets back in here. But still, big, big difference.”

Lawrence may be eased back in somewhat gradually after such a long absence, depending on how he’s feeling once he, as Jones worded it, “gets his game.”

While Cowboys Nation will breathe a sigh of relief just to see Lawrence back in the mix, they’ll also get their first look at a newcomer when the special teams unit takes the field.

Safety Tyler Coyle, an undrafted free agent rookie out of Purdue (who played most of his college career at Connecticut before transferring late), has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster as a COVID replacement, with offensive lineman Terence Steele and cornerback Nahshon Wright on the list.

Coyle gained some attention after a monster pro day with eye-popping stats, running the 40-yard dash in an explosive 4.36 seconds and posting a 39-inch vertical. But that vertical number- while impressive- was a personal disappointment to the former track and field star.

“Honestly, I’m still mad I got a 39-inch vertical,” he said at the time.

He’ll take that chip on his shoulder and get an opportunity to make an even bigger leap as a Dallas Cowboy on Thursday night.

He’ll be wearing, appropriately enough… No. 39.
