5 Clemson players to watch vs. Wake Forest for Homecoming

Here are five players to watch for Clemson’s Homecoming matchup against Wake Forest.

Clemson will host Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and several Tigers will be under the spotlight for Clemson’s Homecoming game.

Last Week against Syracuse, we saw multiple Tigers step up when the team needed it most. From two freshmen phenoms to veterans in the Clemson secondary, this team did exactly what they needed to earn their first ACC win and shut out the noise on the road against a tough Syracuse team.

Wake Forest poses a different challenge, which the Tigers can handle. Here are five Clemson players to keep a close eye on when the Tigers take on the Demon Deacons:

Three Tigers make ESPN’s Top 25 true freshmen, the most in college football

According to ESPN, Clemson leads the country with three top 25 true freshmen.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff did a phenomenal job recruiting in the 2023 class, and we are seeing that translate on the field.

Looking across the country, there have been a lot of standout freshmen this season. Year after year, we see freshmen burst onto the scene and make an immediate impact on their teams. Last season, we saw it in guys like Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins and Clemson wide receiver Antonio Williams.

ESPN recently released an article ranking college football’s top 25 true freshmen ($$$) this season, with three Tigers players making the list. With three players on the rankings, Clemson has the most top true freshmen in the country.

Here is a look at each of the three and what writer Tom Luginbill had to say about them.

5 reasons Clemson picks up a strong Week 6 win over Wake Forest

Here are five reasons Clemson walks away from Week 6 with an impressive win over Wake Forest.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers have a home matchup against Dave Clawson and Wake Forest on Saturday as Clemson looks to pick up their second ACC win of the season.

Clemson (3-2, 1-2 ACC) heads into this game coming off a statement road win against Syracuse, where the Tigers proved to everyone that this team still has a lot of fight left in them. The offense and defense looked strong in the win, and they go back to Death Valley with an opportunity to put on a great performance in front of their fans.

On the other side, Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC) is looking for their first conference win and in a challenging environment. Can Clawson and the Demon Deacons get revenge for their double-overtime home loss to Clemson last season?

Well, anything can happen, but we are here to tell you why they won’t. Here are five reasons Clemson takes down Wake Forest in Week 6.

Two Tigers headline On3’s true freshman standouts from Week 5 of college football

Two Tigers are among the top five true freshmen standouts from Week 5.

Clemson’s freshmen class has looked awesome to start the 2023 season, with a freshman on offense and defense performing at a tremendously high level this season.

On offense, it is wide receiver Tyler Brown who has been turning heads with his play this season. The young wide receiver has been starting quarterback Cade Klubnik’s top target and the offense’s most explosive player so far this season.

On defense, T.J. Parker has looked like the best defensive lineman Clemson has this season. While most of the offseason talk revolved around Peter Woods, Parker has been the clear standout.

In Week 5, both players were excellent, leading to On3 naming them two of five true freshman standouts from Week 5 of college football.

Dabo Swinney looks at Clemson landing breakout freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown as ‘God’s favor’

Dabo Swinney shared his thoughts on the program landing breakout freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program were a decision away from not landing breakout freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown

Opportunities come in many different ways, and for Brown with Clemson, it was a decommitment that made all the difference. The Tigers had former four-star recruit Nathanial Joseph decommit from the program in June of 2022 to sign with opponent Miami. This opened up a spot for Brown to decommit from Minnesota and join the Tigers.

For Swinney, he sees this as God’s favor.

“He’s a kid that we had been evaluating, but we had a kid decommit, and boom – the world’s coming to an end, right, a kid decommits that we really wanted. But that’s why I look at it as God’s favor,” Swinney said. “I always focus on who we do get. I go back to one year we had a defensive lineman that was committed, and he ends up decommitting, but we got this guy named Shaq Lawson [in the 2013 recruiting class] who wasn’t as highly rated, and I think Shaq’s still playing [in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills] and ended up being a first-round draft pick [in 2016]. So, it’s a blessing that we got [Brown], first of all, how it worked out.”

“So, really proud of him,” Swinney added of Brown, a Greenville native. “Great family. He’s a Clemson kid. I’ve got pictures of him at the rock when he was a little shorter than he is now. He was a little bitty guy, and his dad just a really good family. It’s really cool. This kid loves Clemson.”

Brown has been a revelation for Clemson this season and looks possibly be the best wide receiver on the team right now. He currently leads the team in receptions (21) and receiving yards (316) while tied for a team lead in receiving touchdowns with two.

In Clemson’s Week 5 31-14 win over Syracuse, Brown had the best game of his young career. He recorded career highs in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (153) while earning ACC Rookie of the Week and ACC Receiver of the Week honors.

Brown is the real deal, and Clemson got lucky with how this turned out.

Clemson freshmen Tyler Brown and T.J. Parker earn ACC weekly honors

Clemson’s freshmen class has been performing at a high level.

CLEMSON, S.C. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that Clemson wide receiver Tyler Brown and defensive end T.J. Parker have combined for three ACC Player of the Week honors for their performances in Clemson’s 31-14 win at Syracuse on Saturday. Brown collected both ACC Receiver of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week honors while Parker garnered ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week.

The trio of selections are Clemson’s second, third and fourth of the season. Clemson has now earned a total of 569 ACC weekly honors since 1968.

Brown joins Sammy Watkins and Deshaun Watson as the only players in school history to earn multiple ACC weekly honors in a single week. Watkins collected dual awards for performances against Auburn and Maryland in 2011 and Watson did so following superlative efforts against North Carolina and NC State in 2014.

Last week, Brown recorded career highs in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (153), and his 153 receiving yards were the most by a Clemson true freshman since Justyn Ross’ 153 yards against Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game to conclude the 2018 season. Brown became only the seventh player in Clemson history to record a 100-yard receiving game within the first five games of a career, joining Artavis Scott (two games in 2014), Justyn Ross (two games in 2018), Cole Turner (two games in 2022), Sammy Watkins (three games in 2011), Derrick Hamilton (five games in 2001) and Jim Lanzendoen (five games in 1973).

Parker earned his first career ACC Player of the Week honors after posting five tackles (two for loss) and 2.0 sacks on Saturday. He became the first Clemson true freshman to record at least 2.0 sacks in a game since Myles Murphy’s 2.0 sacks in the 2020 season opener at Wake Forest. He joined Murphy, Dexter Lawrence and Corico Wright to become the fourth Clemson freshman under Dabo Swinney to post 2.0 sacks in a single game.

Parker leads all freshmen nationally with 7.5 tackles for loss and is the only freshman in the FBS with 5.0 or more tackles for loss. Through five games, he is already more than halfway to Murphy’s Clemson true freshman record for tackles for loss (12.0). Parker’s 3.0 sacks also rank tied for second nationally among freshmen.

Social media reacts: Freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown is the real deal

Tyler Brown looks like the real deal through five games this season.

Has Clemson found their new star wide receiver?

Clemson has a lot of talent at wide receiver but it has felt like they’ve been lacking that explosive playmaker at the position for a few seasons. Through five games this season, it doesn’t feel that way anymore with freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown breaking out.

It was another impressive performance from the young receiver, hauling in eight receptions for 151 yards. Brown has become a focal point of the passing game early in his career with the Tigers, and you can see why. He runs clean routes, creates separation, has great ball skills and is explosive in open field.

It was a great performance from a great freshman talent. Here is a look at how social media reacted to Brown’s big game.

Five takeaways from Clemson’s strong but inconsistent road win over Syracuse

It was a strong bounce-back win for Clemson, but the Tigers need to continue to work to find more consistency.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers recovered from last week’s overtime loss to Florida State with a bounce-back road 31-14 win over Dino Babers and Syracuse.

Clemson (3-2,1-2 ACC) came to play in the first half, with the defense making plays, causing turnovers, and the offense taking advantage of the opportunities they were given. The second half wasn’t as strong for the Tigers’ offense, but the defense continued to perform as the team picked up a much-needed ACC win.

Watching this win, you can see how talented this Clemson team is and how much more they are capable of. The team needs to continue working and find more consistency in their game.

Here are five takeaways from Clemson’s solid road win against Syracuse.

Brown puts life back into Clemson’s self-proclaimed ‘WRU’

Clemson has needed a playmaker at wide receive the last few seasons, and it appears the Tigers may have one now.

Clemson has needed a true playmaker at wide receiver over the last few seasons, and it appears the team may finally have one.

Starting at slot receiver in the second consecutive game, Tyler Brown caught eight passes for 151 yards in the Tigers’ 31-14 win over Syraucse on Saturday. His eight receptions and 151 yards were career-high marks for the true freshman. From sideline grabs to a 47-yard catch downfield, Brown seemed to always be the player who stepped up when the Tigers needed a play.

Filling in for Antonio Williams, who has missed the last two games with a lower-body injury, Brown was Cade Klubnik’s top target throughout the day. Brown was targeted 11 total times against the Orange, four more than any other Clemson pass-catcher. And through five games, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound receiver now has a team-high 20 receptions for 314 yards.

A Greenville, South Carolina, native, Brown also etched himself in the history books on Saturday, as he is the seventh player in Clemson history to record a 100-yard receiving game within the first five games of a career, according to Clemson football sports information director Ross Taylor.

It took 13 games last year for a Clemson receiver to record a 100-yard game, but through five games this season, the Tigers have two such games, with Brown’s performance and Beaux Collins recording 137 yards against Charleston Southern in Week 2.

While Clemson’s wide receiver room still has work to do to reclaim the title of “WRU,” Brown’s impressive play against the Orange was a sign of life for an offense that needed a boost of confidence.

Clemson bounces back with a road win over Syracuse

Clemson walks away from Syracuse with a solid road win after an up-and-down performance.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers walked away from Syracuse with a solid 31-14 road win over the Orange.

It was a strong first-half performance from the Clemson defense and offense. While the defense made stops and caused turnovers, the offense took advantage and put points on the board.

At the end of the first half, the Tigers had a 21-7 lead and looked great as they dominated the half. Like many other games this season, Clemson failed to put together a complete performance and looked somewhat underwhelming in the second half.

Clemson’s offense looked stale in the second half, playing like a team looking to hold a lead rather than extend it. That was before junior running back Phil Mafah decided he wanted to shut the door on a possible Syracuse comeback.

Following a massive Jeremiah Trotter Jr. interception, Mafah made the Orange pay for the turnover. On the drive’s first play, Mafah took a carry 32 yards to the house to seal the win for the Tigers.

Starting quarterback Cade Klubnik had a strong performance, completing 23 of 37 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Mafah and Will Shipley combined for 104 yards and two scores on the ground.

Freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown looked like a star in this performance. He recorded eight receptions for 151 yards.

Clemson’s defense put together another strong showing, with Trotter Jr. totaling 7 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 0.5 tackles for loss, and an interception. He and Barrett Carter (7 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 0.5 TFL) led the way for this stout defense.

Clemson’s next matchup will host Wake Forest on Homecoming next Saturday at Memorial Stadium, with kickoff set for 3:30p.m.
