Tennessee Titans agree to terms with CB Tye Smith

Tye Smith is coming back to Nashville on a one-year deal.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with cornerback Tye Smith on a one-year deal, which will keep him in Nashville for another season.

The news comes from Jim Wyatt of Titans Online and was confirmed by the team’s official Twitter account.

The Titans have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with cornerback Tye Smith.

Smith played in nine games (three starts) for the Titans in 2019, totaling 26 combined tackles and two forced fumbles.

Smith was originally signed by the Titans in 2017, but was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Titans were looking a bit thin at cornerback after the departure of LeShaun Sims to the Cincinnati Bengals and with Logan Ryan’s return looking increasingly unlikely.

The return of Smith provides some much-needed depth in the secondary and on special teams.

Tennessee will likely continue to be active at the position. The team will probably add at least one cornerback in the NFL Draft and could add more players to the position through free agency in the weeks ahead.

5 standouts from Titans’ 42-21 win over Raiders

It took a full team effort in which several players stood out, but some were just a cut above the rest.

The Tennessee Titans (8-5) look like a fully developed team as they recorded a 42-21 win over the Oakland Raiders (6-7) on the road Sunday.

Next week, they’ll take on the division rival Houston Texans in Nissan Stadium for the tiebreaker for the top spot in the AFC South.

It took a full team effort in which several players stood out, but some were just a cut above the rest.

Here’s a look at some of those names.

1. QB Ryan Tannehill.

We’ve heard plenty about Tannehill’s inconsistencies in the past, but he’s kept his foot on the gas since he’s been the starter in Tennessee.

Tannehill had yet another huge game, completing 21-of-27 passes for 391 yards with three touchdowns and one interception while distributing the ball to 10 different receivers.

Observations from Titans’ 42-21 win over Raiders

Here are some quick observations we made throughout the game.

The Tennessee Titans (8-5) recorded their fourth straight victory as they came into Oakland and defeated the Raiders (6-7), 42-21.

The game was a shootout at first, tied 21-21 at halftime, but the defense came alive and the team was able to leave with a dominant victory.

The Titans look like a team that compete as they face the division rival Houston Texans in Nissan Stadium next week.

Here are some quick observations we made throughout the game.

– Tannehill attempted a slant deep in Raiders territory, and was intercepted by Maurice Hurst. Tannehill tackles him at the Titans’ 24-yard line.

– It took the Raiders hardly an time at all to put a D’Andre Washington touchdown on the board. This marked Washington’s second touchdown of the season.

– Khari Blasingame made his first career catch, a 24-yarder, on a wheel route to bring the Titans to the Oakland 23. It wasn’t long after that Derrick Henry took a 12-yard touchdown in to make it 7-7 with 3:21 left to play in the first quarter.

– The Titans got a stop on the Raiders on the following drive, leaving them punting.

-A.J. Brown caught a 91-yard playaction touchdown pass from Tannehill to give the Titans a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.

– Carr hit Rico Gafford as the Titans got lost in man-to-man coverage, allowing them to tie the game up at 14-14.

– Tannehill connected with Anthony Firkser on what would have been a touchdown pass, but it was called back due to holding on offensive lineman Nate Davis.

[lawrence-related id=23232]

– Brown came up with his second touchdown of the day on a 16-yarder from Tannehill. He broke through three tackles as he drove his way into the end-zone.

– The Titans were nearly able to prevent a Raiders touchdown at the bottom of second quarter, but the defense gave way and allowed a touchdown reception by tight end Foster Moreau. The game was tied at 21-21 soon before halftime.

Titans-Colts: a look at defensive snap counts

Here’s a complete look at the defensive snap counts.

Safeties Kenny Vaccaro and Kevin Byard, along with cornerback Logan Ryan all played in each of the game’s 72 defensive snaps.

Five standouts from Titans’ 31-17 win over Colts

Here are five standouts from the victory.

The Tennessee Titans (7-5) look like a much more put-together team than when they last faced the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) and fell 19-17 on their home turf.

That showed when they recorded a 31-17 victory on the road in Indianapolis this week. With the victory, the Titans now sit on a three-game winning streak.

Here are five standouts from the victory.

1. QB Ryan Tannehill.

Did anyone truly believe Tannehill would handle the offense as well as he has after taking Marcus Mariota’s place. He’s only lost one game as a starter for Tennessee, and the team seems to have totally turned themselves around in his presence.

Tannehill was 17-of-22 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns — without an interception. Jacoby Brissett can hardly say the same.

Observations from Titans’ 31-17 win over Colts

Here are a few quick observations we made throughout the contest.

The Tennessee Titans (7-5) are a very different team than when they last faced the Indianapolis Colts (6-6) and fell 19-17 in Nissan Stadium.

That showed when they hit the Colts’ turf on Sunday and recorded a 31-17 victory in Lucas Oil Stadium. With the victory, the Titans now sit on a three-game winning streak.

Here are a few quick observations we made throughout the contest.

– The Titans got the ball first, allowing quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the offense to go to work.

[lawrence-related id=23066]

– Feeding Derrick Henry has been key, and the Titans gave him the ball first. Henry fumbled the ball after a big run.

– Indianapolis had the Tennessee secondary on its toes, and quarterback Jacoby Brissett took advantage of the confusion it deliver a touchdown pass to tight end Jack Doyle to send the Colts up, 7-0 early on.

– Tannehill looked accurate and efficient on the following drive, connecting with A.J. Brown and later with wideout Adam Humphries to tie the game at 7-7.

– The Titans used Ryan Succop for an extra-point attempt and Ryan Santoso on the following kickoff. Santoso’s kickoff resulted in a touchback.

[lawrence-related id=23061]

– Adam Vinatieri missed a 55-yard field goal and the game stayed tied.

– Tannehill tried to escape pressure as the Titans got the ball back, but fumbled instead to commit the second turnover of the game.

– Cornerback Adoree Jackson was shaken up and missed a few plays, but came up with a tackle for loss when he made his return.

– Vinatieri tried another long field goal, but the attempt was blocked by Austin Johnson. It was a strong series for Johnson, who had a tackle for loss on the previous loss.

[lawrence-related id=23051]

– Tannehill was sacked on the following drive before the Titans were left punting.

– The colts really got rolling on their following drive, but the Titans defense managed to hold them to a field goal. Vinatieri was good from 38 yards out to give the Colts a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

– The Titans saw much more of the same on the following drive, which ended in a sack on Tannehill and had the team punting again.

– Tannehill was sacked five times in the first half, including two times on the team’s last drive of the second quarter.

[lawrence-related id=23042]

– The Colts were on the move early in the third quarter, and started the half strong with a touchdown. Nyheim Himes took it in on the one-yarder. It was 17-7, Indianapolis as Tennessee started to fall behind.

– The Titans answered back on what was a huge drive for Henry, as the former Alabama rusher took it in for a score. The Titans trailed just 17-14.

– Complementary football is something the Titans stress, and the defense matched the efforts of the offense when Brissett got back to the field and was intercepted by safety Kevin Byard.

– A 31-yard field goal by Ryan Succop tied the game, and the defense forced a three-and-out on the Colts’ next possession.

[lawrence-related id=23003]

– Safety Dane Cruikshank blocked a Colts field goal attempt, and cornerback Tye Smith ran it in for a touchdown to make it 24-17, Titans.

– Tannehill was sacked a total of six times on the win.

Titans CB Tye Smith has shown improvement as he prepares for larger role

The Tennessee Titans have overcome many obstacles throughout the 2019 season, but one of those that continues to loom over is the injury bug.

The Tennessee Titans have overcome many obstacles throughout the 2019 season, but one of those that continues to loom over is the injury bug.

Tennessee’s secondary has been hit hard with injuries to cornerbacks Malcolm Butler and LeShaun Sims.

Butler has been placed on Injured Reserve, and LeShaun Sims, who came in as his replacement, has missed two consecutive days of practice with an ankle injury.

With this, Tye Smith is the next man up. Head coach Mike Vrabel is confident the cornerback is up to the task, and has seen him progressively get better this season.

[lawrence-related id=22997]

“He’s got good length. I think that he’s been a good special teams player for us. There’s been some versatility,” Vrabel said. “I think the thing I would like to say about Tye (Smith) is, I feel like he’s improved as one of those players on the show team that’s gone out there and worked against A.J. (Brown), Humph (Adam Humphries, Corey (Davis), Tajaé (Sharpe), Kalif (Raymond) and all of them, and really improved. That’s what excites me is that a player that’s gotten better without a lot of game-rep opportunities throughout the course of the season to be ready for this opportunity.”

Smith has played in four games for the Titans this season, and has two combined tackles.

The Titans and Colts are set to kick off at noon CT on Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium.
