Carlos Dunlap hopes to pick up where team left off heading into 2021

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Carlos Dunlap hopes to pick up where the team left off heading into the 2021 season.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to re-sign defensive end Carlos Dunlap back to the roster this year and the veteran already has plans for the new season . . .  he wants to pick right back up where the Seahawks left off.

“I think the team’s motivated,” Dunlap told 710 ESPN Seattle’ Danny and Gallant show last week. “We all know we fell short and the main reason why was on us. We didn’t perform when it was time to perform, so we got sent home. Coming in with that experience and having the experience to be with the team for the whole season I think is going to help me long-term. It’ll make things easier.”

And now with the pressure of having to re-negotiate a new contract no longer on his back, Dunlap can focus on the future and the season ahead.

“I feel like we can continue to build on where we left because things were just starting to click for us going into the playoffs,” he said.

“I want to pick up where we left off.”

Grading RB Chris Carson re-signing with the Seahawks: B

The Seattle Seahawks have earned themselves a B grade for re-signing starting running back Chris Carson.

On Friday, the Seahawks re-committed to their philosophy of balanced offense by re-signing running back Chris Carson to what was originally reported as a three-year, $24.625 million deal with voidable years.

The mechanics of the deal are a bit more team-friendly.

Since he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Oklahoma State, Carson has been almost a cult hero among both Seahawks Twitter — which is something of a legend in its own right — and fantasy football Twitter. Of course, back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons might also have something to do with that, which Carson posted in both 2018 and 2019. Back during that 2019 campaign, Carson ran for 1,230 yards on 278 carries, and also caught 37 passes for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

There are some concerns with Carson going forward. First there is the injury history. Carson’s 2019 season was cut short with a hip fracture, and he also missed time this past year with a sprained foot. Then there are the fumble woes. This dates back to his time with Oklahoma State, where he was benched for losing the ball, and continues into his NFL days. Back in 2019 Carson fumbled seven times — including four lost fumbles — and was also inconsistent at the mesh point with quarterback Russell Wilson, which led to some fumbles that were charged to the quarterback.

Those two factors were going to play in any negotiation this offseason. But the opportunity to re-add a running back with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons is going to intrigue most front offices, and no front office more than Seattle’s.

Seahawks re-signing pending RFA Poona Ford to 2-year deal

The Seahawks are signing pending restricted free agent Poona Ford to a two-year deal, keeping the defensive tackle in Seattle.

The Seattle Seahawks are starting to make some moves ahead of the official first day of the start of free agency. Seattle is signing defensive tackle Poona Ford to a two-year contract extension. The move was first reported by ESPN’s Brady Henderson and confirmed by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The Seahawks are re-signing NT Poona Ford to a two-year deal that can be worth close to $14 million with incentives, per source,” Pelissero tweeted. “Ford gets over $4.4M in 2021 — more than the second-round tender — with a chance for bigger money in 2022 and free agency in 2023, when he’ll be 27.”

The deadline to tender restricted free agents is at the start of the new league year on Wednesday. Any RFAs not tendered by that time automatically become unrestricted free agents.
