Bizarre catches by Russian fisherman

A commercial fisherman started photographing weird catches that come up in the trawling nets, and some of the fish are out of this world.

Roman Fedortsov works as a commercial fisherman on a trawler out of the port city of Murmansk in the northwest part of Russia. He began photographing the bizarre catches his boat made and started posting the photos on social media.

He now has more than half a million followers on Instagram.

These strange-looking fish are out of this world. Behold…

Top-10 highest paid college football coaches

Who is the highest paid coach in college football?

College athletics is a multibillion dollar industry with huge amounts of money falling into the pockets of just about everyone involved — except the players actually participating.

Coaches’ salaries continue to climb, the base amounts are approaching eight figures and the bonus opportunities now written into contracts seem endless. Through the 2019 conference championship weekend, head coaches at FBS public schools have earned nearly $9.5 million in bonuses so far, according to USA TODAY Sports.

For example, LSU coach Ed Orgeron has already earned $1.05 million in bonuses on top of his $4 million annual salary. By beating Georgia in the SEC championship game, he earned $425,000 in bonuses: $200,000 for the Tigers winning the conference championship and another $225,000 for the team making it to the College Football Playoff.

And there’s even more money on the table if he continues winning. He’ll receive $150,000 for winning a playoff semifinal game — LSU plays Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl — and could get $500,000 with a national championship.

Also, because so many coaches are employed by public universities, the highest paid public employee in 39 states is either a college football or basketball coach, according to ESPN.

But how much is that exactly? Here’s a breakdown of the top-10 highest paid college football coaches in 2019, according to USA TODAY Sports‘ salary database.

Second place in Group D is up for grabs on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage. Atletico Madrid comes into the last day with a one-point cushion over Bayer Leverkusen and must take care of business against last place Lokomotiv Moscow to earn a spot in the Round of 16.

Recent form will be worrying for Diego Simeone’s side. Losses against Barcelona in La Liga and Juventus in the Champions League jump out at you, but the team’s most recent 0-0 draw with Villarreal is the main reason the team is in seventh in the league. Atletico Madrid’s inconsistency has put the team in this position of possibly not making the knockout rounds. If that happens, it would be a huge blow for the ambitious club after such a busy summer of transfer dealings.

Leverkusen has to go up against group winner Juve in the concurrent match. This could be good or bad news from Atleti’s perspective. With the group already in hand, Maurizio Sarri could use this chance to rest some of his best players. If that happens and the Germans get full points, the pressure to get a win will be immense.

As always seems to be the case with a Simeone-led side, it’s scoring goals that’s the main problem. The team has only scored 16 goals in 16 La Liga matches so far and just about kept that same pace in Europe with six goals in five played. A stout defense is a given, but can the team find the back of the net when it matters most?

For Lokomotiv, while extremely unlikely, the team has an outside shot at getting a Europa League spot if it beats Atleti, Juve beats Leverkusen and the team overtakes the Germans in goal differential.

Video showing man riding on back of deer leads to arrest

An Oregon man has been arrested on wildlife harassment charges after video surfaced showing him riding on the back of a wild buck mule deer.

An 18-year-old Oregon man has been charged with wildlife harassment and animal abuse after video surfaced showing him riding on the back of a mule deer.

Oregon State Police identified two men suspected in the Dec. 6 stunt after reviewing the footage – since removed from social media platforms – as part of an investigation that also involved the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Jacob Belcher, of Riley, was identified as the man riding on the back of a buck that had become trapped inside a fenced area in Harney County.

“Throughout the video, the mule deer buck can be heard grunting and/or bleating and after escaping the rider, the buck jumped into a linked fence, multiple times, attempting to escape the enclosure,” Oregon State Police stated in a news release issued Tuesday night. “The buck was eventually freed and its status at this time is unknown.”

Belcher, who was arrested and sent to Harney County Jail, was charged with wildlife harassment and animal abuse.

The secondary suspect, who was not identified, was said to have videotaped the stunt and faces charges of “Aiding in a Wildlife Offense.”

Charges were referred to the Harney County District Attorney’s Office.

Hunter sprays deer repellent in brother’s hunting spot, is cited

An unusual dispute came to light when an officer got a complaint about hunter harassment only to find it was one brother reporting another.

A family feud between two hunters in Michigan culminated in a man admitting to a conservation officer that he sprayed deer repellent on his brother’s hunting stands.

The unusual dispute came to light when Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Mike Wells received a complaint about hunter harassment in Newaygo County only to discover it was one brother reporting the other, according to MLive.com.

The complainant has two hunting stands that sit on U.S. Forest Service property, which is located next to a private camp that was willed to both brothers by their father. The other brother hunts from a blind on the private property.

The complainant told Wells he was “extremely frustrated” by his brother’s continued harassment while on the private property. He proceeded to give Wells two SD Cards from trail cameras that showed a subject wearing a yellow backpack sprayer spraying the two hunting stands on Forest Service land.

Wells accompanied the complainant to the stands and collected evidence samples of the unknown liquid.

Then, on the morning of the firearm season, Wells approached the suspected brother as he hunted from the blind on private property and discovered he was illegally hunting over bait.

Wells confronted the suspect and showed him a photo from the trail camera, at which point he confessed to spraying both stands because his brother was intentionally cutting off the deer by hunting the public land next to the private camp.

He also admitted that the spray was “liquid fence,” designed to deter deer from entering the area and that he did it to scare deer away. He apologized and told Wells his emotions got the best of him.

Wells submitted a warrant request for hunter harassment and baiting deer when prohibited.

According to Michigan law, unlawful baiting deer is a misdemeanor offense that carries a penalty of a maximum of 90 days in jail, a fine between $50 and $500, court costs and state fees, and loss of hunting privileges at the court’s discretion.

Hunter harassment is also a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to 93 days and/or a fine of between $500 and $1,000 plus court costs.

“I suppose this means the gift exchange is cancelled for them this Christmas,” one commenter on MLive.com quipped.

How to Watch UEFA Champions League, Chelsea vs. Lille, Live Stream, Schedule, US TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Chelsea vs. Lille Live Online.

Chelsea is desperate for three points when it hosts Champions League foes Lille on Tuesday. The Blues hope to climb from third in Group H and clinch a place in the round of 16. Frank Lampard is on the verge of booking knockout stage football in his first season managing in the Champions League, but he’ll have to leapfrog Ajax or Valencia in order to do so.

The Godenzonen lead Group H by two points and host Valencia on Tuesday, with Los Che level on eight points with the Blues ahead by virtue of goal difference. Chelsea has to better Valencia’s result in Amsterdam if it’s to progress in the competition, but Lille looks to have regained form just as the west Londoners have lost it.

Christophe Galtier’s men have won three on the bounce after shrugging off a recent stretch of five matches without a victory, moving to third in Ligue 1. Nevertheless, the French outfit has taken one point from a possible 15 in Europe this season and may be lacking motivation midweek.

That being said, Chelsea looks vulnerable after winning once in its last five outings and dropping 3-1 away to Everton on Saturday. Lampard’s side is still fourth in the Premier League and safe by five points, but failure to win on Tuesday would mark a new low for this term.

Central defender Antonio Rudiger could make his second appearance of the season following a groin injury that’s kept him sidelined since September. Lampard even suggested Rudiger could start in the absence of injured Fikayo Tomori.

Lille forward Timothy Weah will play no part at Stamford Bridge due to injury, while Reinildo and Adama Soumaoro are doubtful. Galtier could make widespread changes to his team considering Lille’s certain fourth-place finish, although some stars may crave one final appearance in continental competition.

Chelsea can still finish first in Group H should it win and Ajax draw at home to Los Che. The Londoners hold a 5-4 head-to-head advantage over the Dutch giants and will snatch the last seed in that scenario, although either Ajax or Valencia is sure to win the pool with a victory.

Watch Inter Milan vs. Barcelona Live Online.

Barcelona has already secured a first-place finish in Group F of this season’s Champions League, but Tuesday’s hosts, Inter Milan, have everything left to fight for in a battle for second.

Antonio Conte’s men are level on seven points with third-place Borussia Dortmund ahead of Matchday 6, with the Italians under pressure to match the Germans’ result at home to Slavia Prague.

Inter Milan vs. Barcelona

Inter lost 2-1 when it traveled to Camp Nou in early October when two Luis Suarez goals turned the game in favor of the hosts following a surprise Lautaro Martinez opener in the third minute.

Both teams lead their respective domestic leagues, with the Nerazzurri having opened up a two-point lead at the Serie A summit following Juventus’ recent 3-1 draw at Lazio. Inter failed to score in a game for the first time this season when it drew 0-0 at home to AS Roma on Friday.

Barca leads La Liga via goal difference as it sits level on points with Real Madrid. Ernesto Valverde is sure to have one eye on the first Clasico of the campaign on Dec. 18.

That could work in Inter’s favor should Valverde opt to rest any of his regular stars for this trip to the San Siro, which holds little consequence for the Catalan visitors.

The likes of Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Carles Perez could come in for some valuable minutes against Inter, while it’s possible Lionel Messi will be rested from the starting XI.

The Argentinian is on an astonishing streak of 10 goals and three assists in his last seven games for club and country, almost as if to underline his recent record sixth Ballon d’Or victory.

Messi may well demand the chance to continue that run and help to beat a tough Inter from the start, though Valverde will be wary given his team rotation and the criticism he’s received.

Dortmund looks to be the strong favorites to beat Slavia at home, which would see Inter finish third and drop into the Europa League round of 32, unless Inter can match that result against Barcelona.

Two of Inter’s three defeats in all competitions this term have occurred in the Champions League. Conte & Co. would surely be remiss to see their run in Europe’s top-tier tournament end here given their positive form this season, but a sharp fall could await if they fail to win on Tuesday.

Great white sharks show off Hilton Head; first catch is ‘perfect’

Great white sharks that generated so many headlines off Cape Cod during the summer and fall are beginning to show off South Carolina.

Great white sharks that generated so many headlines off Cape Cod during the summer are beginning to show off South Carolina.

Capt. Chip Michalove of Outcast Sport Fishing logged his first tag-and-release of the season Sunday off Hilton Head, involving a young female shark that “took off like a bullet” after the hook was removed.

“She originally grabbed the bait right behind the boat, but missed the hook,” Michalove explained on Facebook. “About an hour later she came back more aggressive and took it all. Perfect hook set and perfect tag application.”

And perfect photo.

The junior apex predator measured only 8 feet, but opened wide to reveal a classic set of great white shark choppers before she was set free, allowing for a spectacular image capture (top and bottom images).

Salt Creek Outfitters accompanied Michalove to gather footage for a documentary and afterward stated, “Man are we glad we did, this shark put on a show for us yesterday and she wasn’t afraid to show off her smile, either.”

Michalove, who has a scientific permit to tag white sharks, told For The Win Outdoors that white sharks are just beginning to arrive off Hilton Head.

“They’re right on time this winter,” he said. “The water is much colder than usual so I was curious if they already went by.”

Michalove said early arrivals tend to be juveniles, with adult sharks showing a bit later and ranging “for a few months” between South Carolina and Florida.

“By Christmas or early January we get a 14- to 16-footer, like clockwork,” the captain said.

The sharks do not have thousands of seals on which to prey, as they do during the summer feeding months in coastal waters off Cape Cod. Michalove said they’re more opportunistic beyond Hilton Head, “looking for anything sick, dying or weak to eat.”
