EuroBasket knockout round schedule for Turkey’s Alperen Sengun, Spain’s Usman Garuba

Rockets prospects Alperen Sengun (Turkey) and Usman Garuba (Spain) are moving on at EuroBasket! Here’s a look at the knockout stage bracket and schedule.

The knockout stage of the ongoing European Basketball Championship, best known as EuroBasket 2022, will take place between Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 18. All games will be played inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany.

The knockout stage comprises 16 nations that advanced from group-stage play, which began on Sept. 1. The good news for the Houston Rockets is  both of the team’s players in the tournament — Alperen Sengun for Turkey, and Usman Garuba for Spain — advanced. Turkey is 3-2 in the competition, while Spain is 4-1.

In the Round of 16, which begins Saturday, Sengun and Turkey will face Rudy Gobert and France in a matchup that starts at 5 a.m. Central time. Meanwhile, Garuba and Spain will face Lithuania at 1:45 p.m. Central. Streaming access is available from our friends at RocketsWatch, and the complete bracket can be viewed below.

During the knockout rounds, the 16-team field will be cut to eight, four, two, and ultimately one champion via the Sept. 18 championship game. There will also be a third-place game on that same date.

Should Sengun and Turkey advance Saturday, their next game in the round of eight would take place on Wednesday, Sept. 14. If Spain and Garuba move on, they would next play on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Through the five group-stage games, Sengun is averaging 18.2 points (63.3% FG), 8.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 30.8 minutes for Turkey, while Garuba is averaging 4.4 points (69.2% FG) and 4.8 rebounds in 16.4 minutes for Spain. Each international player will soon begin his second professional season with the Rockets after being selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft.

Alperen Sengun puts on a show as Turkey routs Belgium at EuroBasket

Rockets center Alperen Sengun had 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists on elite efficiency Tuesday, and it led Turkey to a big win over Belgium at EuroBasket 2022.

Second-year Rockets center Alperen Sengun, now competing for his native Turkey at the European Basketball Championship (EuroBasket 2022), reportedly had trouble sleeping after his squad took its first loss earlier in the week to Georgia. It was a relatively unexpected defeat, since Turkey is at No. 16 and Georgia at No. 36 in FIBA’s world rankings, and Sengun took it to heart as a team leader.

Two days later, Sengun made amends in a big way.

In Tuesday’s group stage matchup versus Belgium, Turkey won its game with relative ease, 78-63 (box score), and Sengun was the biggest reason why. The 20-year-old scored 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting (52.9%), including 1-of-2 from 3-point range (50.0%) and 3-of-3 on free throws (100.0%). Sengun also grabbed 8 rebounds and 6 assists, had only 2 turnovers, and Turkey was a team-best +27 in his 32 minutes.

It certainly wasn’t a Belgium side devoid of talent, either, since they were coming off a 10-point victory on Sunday versus Spain — the world’s No. 2 team, according to FIBA’s rankings.

Turkey is now 3-1 at EuroBasket, which leads Group A heading into Wednesday’s group-stage finale versus Spain (whose roster features its own Houston prospect in Usman Garuba). Scroll on for highlights and analysis of Sengun’s superb work versus Belgium.

Meanwhile, Korkmaz narrated the infamous incident differently than Shengelia. “It was like a street fight. There was no talk or conversation. People just came at us and were trying to attack us. Of course, we reacted and tried to defend ourselves – exactly what we are going to do as men. I also think it’s a security problem. But I don’t know if it’s a security problem or if they just showed tolerance to their players. We understand that they’re at home, but this is unacceptable. What happens on the court is fine, but we should talk more about what happens off the court,” Korkmaz told the media.

Highlights, live streams: Tracking Alperen Sengun and Usman Garuba at EuroBasket 2022

Rockets prospects Alperen Sengun (Turkey) and Usman Garuba (Spain) are playing this week at EuroBasket 2022. Here’s how to watch and our look at how they’re faring.

Training camp for the Houston Rockets doesn’t begin until late September, and the 2022-23 regular season won’t get underway until mid-October. But for at least two of the rebuilding club’s promising young players, the competitive games will start much earlier.

Alperen Sengun and Usman Garuba, selected by the Rockets in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft, are competing for Turkey and Spain, respectively, in the European Basketball Championship. EuroBasket, as it is best known, tips off on Thursday, Sept. 1.

While most EuroBasket games won’t be shown on over-the-air television in the United States, live streams are available. For those unable to catch the action live, Rockets fans and media will clip many of the highlights (or lowlights) involving Sengun and Garuba.

With that in mind, scroll on for a daily schedule and streaming links for Sengun and Garuba’s games. When completed, each day’s section will also be updated with relevant highlights and statistics.

Schedules beyond Sept. 7 have yet to be determined, since they depend on results from the initial group stage games.

Highlights: In Turkey-Serbia matchup, Alperen Sengun shines vs. Nikola Jokic

Led by back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, Serbia held off Turkey on Sunday. But Rockets big man Alperen Sengun (17 points, 13 rebounds) made quite an impression.

Led by a strong outing from back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, Serbia held off Turkey, 79-72 (box score), in Sunday’s European qualifier for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 tournament.

But while the perennial All-Star center of the Denver Nuggets was the headliner, Turkey rallied from an early deficit and made the game very competitive thanks to a similarly elite performance by young center Alperen Sengun of the Houston Rockets.

Sengun tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots in 34 minutes, and he made 8-of-9 shots (88.9%) from the free-throw line. Turkey was +3 as a team in the 34-plus minutes that the 20-year-old played, and -10 in the nearly six minutes that he sat out.

Sengun’s big game still wasn’t enough to win, however, thanks to another brilliant game from Jokic. The massive Serbian big man scored 25 points in 25 minutes on 10-of-16 shooting (62.5%), and he also grabbed 10 rebounds in leading his team to victory.

Scroll on for a look at highlights and key takeaways.
