Bengals WR coach Troy Walters a candidate for Cardinals OC

The Cardinals have requested an interview with Troy Walters.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers coach Troy Walters has the eye of the Arizona Cardinals.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Cardinals requested permission to interview Walters for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

This news comes right on the heels of Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher turning down a look elsewhere in an effort to win a Super Bowl in Cincinnati. It also comes after finalizing the fact both offensive coordinator Brian Callahan and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo will return.

Walters has been a rising star in league circles and was recently a finalist for the offensive coordinator job in Houston before the Texans went a different route.

For now, the idea the Bengals will retain all of their key assistants is once again on hold.

Report: Texans interview Bengals WR coach Troy Walters for spot on DeMeco Ryans’ staff

The Houston Texans have interviewed Cincinnati Bengals receivers coach Troy Walters for a spot on DeMeco Ryans’ new staff.

DeMeco Ryans isn’t just looking at the San Francisco 49ers for his assistant coaches as he assembles his first Houston Texans staff.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans completed an interview with Cincinnati Bengals receivers coach Troy Walters.

Walters has no experience coaching with Ryans as he was on the Bengals’ staff working with receivers in some capacity the past two seasons. However, he is grafted into the Mike Shanahan coaching tree via Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams. Through Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor, who was on the Rams’ staff from 2017-18, is where Walters has his tenuous link to the offensive system that the 49ers are running with Kyle Shanahan.

The former A&M Consolidated High School product played in the NFL from 2000-07, and then held sundry coaching jobs in the college ranks from 2009-19.

The current receivers coach is Ben McDaniels, who also serves as the pass game coordinator.

Texans request interview with Bengals’ Troy Walters for offensive coordinator job

Another opportunity for a notable Bengals coach.

The Cincinnati Bengals have yet another coach earning interest from outside teams.

The Houston Texans have requested permission to interview wide receivers coach Troy Walters for their open offensive coordinator job, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS.

Walters joined the Bengals in 2020 as an assistant before taking over the role in 2021. He’s a fast-riser, featured in the accelerator program and has had a role in helping install the team’s very successful red zone game planning.

Walters joins quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, who got looks as an offensive coordinator before the Bengals swooped in and extended him. Offensive coordinator Brian Callahan has received looks as a head coach this cycle, as has defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Lost in the major news that the Cincinnati Bengals have brought back Frank Pollack to coach the offensive line is another smaller revelation — the team has promoted Troy Walters to wide receivers coach.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported the move, revealing Walters will fill the void left by the departure of Bob Bicknell.

Walters was a fifth-round draft pick in 2000 and he played in the NFL through 2007 before shifting to coaching. There, he hopped around as a wideouts coach before becoming the offensive coordinator at UCF and Nebraska.

The move comes at an interesting time for the wideout room as names like A.J. Green and John Ross figure to leave the team, leaving Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins as the key pieces. Walters and Co. will have to decide on adding to the room, either via free agency or the draft as the team continues to build around Joe Burrow.
