UCLA coaching search: Could Bruins go after Stanford’s Troy Taylor?

Could UCLA take a swing at hiring Troy Taylor away from Stanford?

The UCLA Bruins football program is in the thick of a new coaching search after Chip Kelly left for Ohio State.

Which direction they go in remains to be seen, and a lot of candidates have been linked as possible choices. However, everything has been kept hidden from UCLA’s side, so nobody knows exactly where they go.

One intriguing name is Stanford head coach Troy Taylor, as Bruce Feldman of The Athletic noted in his latest intel (subscription required).

Jarmond also has some interest in Stanford’s Troy Taylor. The 55-year-old two-time Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year had a rough debut season with the Cardinal, going 3-9. That included a 42-7 home loss to UCLA. But he is a good offensive coach and did an impressive job with the Sacramento State Hornets, posting a 30-8 record.

Taylor was at Sacramento State before going to Stanford and making the big jump to the Pac-12 Conference (and the ACC next season).

Taylor leaving Stanford to go to UCLA and the Big Ten Conference would be quite the move, but it appears Martin Jarmond is casting a wide net to find Chip Kelly’s replacement.

Stanford head coach Troy Taylor discusses historic comeback win over Colorado

Here’s what Stanford head coach Troy Taylor had to say following the Cardinal’s upset of Colorado

In one of the most historic games in Pac-12 history, head coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes took a heartbreaking 46-43 double-overtime loss to the Stanford Cardinal on Friday night.

Colorado’s 29-point collapse was the largest blown lead in Buffaloes football history while Stanford overcame its largest deficit in program history

Following the incredible come-from-behind victory, Stanford head coach Troy Taylor spoke to the media about his team’s second-half performance and how the Cardinal was able to pull a win for the ages.

Here are some of the top quotes from Taylor following Stanford’s historic comeback win over the Buffs:

Pac-12 Preview: Stanford braces itself for a major rebuild project

Stanford was once the class of the Pac-12 and competed for Rose Bowl on an annual basis.

Those days are long gone.

Head Coach David Shaw retired after the program went downhill for a variety of reasons and this was even before the pandemic, which set the Cardinal behind the proverbial 8-ball and then some.

After 12 seasons, Stanford was on the market for a new head coach when it finally settled on Sacramento State’s Troy Taylor. Before helming the Hornets, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah for two seasons.

Stanford also hired Wisconsin defensive coordinator Bobby April where he led one of the top defenses in the country. But again, the talent has to be there and at this very moment, talent is on short supply.

If you think attendance is a problem in Palo Alto when the Cardinal are good, Stanford Stadium could be a graveyard for the next couple of seasons as the rebuild goes on.

Here’s our complete preview for the Cardinal in 2023.

Troy Taylor makes noise in recruiting world during first year at Stanford

Troy Taylor is showing signs of life at Stanford. The Cardinal moved in front of USC to claim the No. 2 ranking in the Pac-12, and they now have the No. 16 class in the nation.

I think it may be a year or two before we start talking about the Stanford Cardinal in any way that resembles the way that we used to in the Pac-12 as a power on the field, but new head coach Troy Taylor is quickly starting to make some noise on the recruiting front.

After getting hired by Stanford back in December of 2022, leaving Sacramento State, Taylor has found his way into the top 25 of the national recruiting rankings after landing an elite 4-star edge rusher on Tuesday that currently leads the class.

Dylan Stephenson chose to commit to Stanford over schools like Florida State, Auburn, and Arizona State. He is rated by 247Sports as the No. 158 overall player in the 2024 class, and No. 13 EDGE in the nation.

The Cardinal also have a commitment from 4-star EDGE Naki Tuakoi in 2024, the No. 291 overall player and No. 22 player at his position in the class.

With the latest commitment, Stanford is now 16th in the national recruiting rankings, and they moved in front of USC for the No. 2 class in the Pac-12 so far this cycle.

While it’s been a while since we talked about the Cardinal as a team that you need to worry about contending in the Pac-12, the early days for Taylor are showing some life. There’s a chance that they could continue to close on several blue-chip players and put a solid 2024 class together. Of course, that won’t end up playing out on the field for at least a year or two, but if Taylor can stack talent in the offseason, both via recruiting and the transfer portal, then we may see Stanford get back to the great team they were for so many years under David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh over the past decade-plus.

Reactions to Stanford hiring Troy Taylor as new head coach

Get national and #Pac12 reactions from writers and analysts after Stanford hired Sacramento State’s Troy Taylor to replace David Shaw.

The Stanford Cardinal were in the head coaching market for the first time in nearly two decades after David Shaw decided to step down following the 2022 season.

A ton of candidates emerged, and former NFL head coach Jason Garrett was even a rumored option to take the Cardinal job.

However, Stanford ultimately decided to go with Troy Taylor, who recently turned around the Sacramento State football program and now stays in Northern California to take over a tough program at Stanford.

The reactions came pouring in, and here are a few of the notable media reactions after Stanford hired Troy Taylor.

Former LSU QB takes center stage in FCS playoffs

Lindsey Scott Jr. has taken the road less traveled, but he’s lighting up the scoreboard for a championship contender.

It’s been awhile since many LSU fans have heard the name “[autotag]Lindsey Scott Jr.[/autotag]”

This is a guy who arrived at LSU before [autotag]Myles Brennan[/autotag] did.

The past seven years have taken Scott on a journey. His career began at LSU before he took the JUCO route. He was then back in the SEC at Missouri. He didn’t play there and transferred back to his home state, playing for Nicholls.

After a stint there, he’s now at Incarnate Word and he’s put on a show.

In Incarnate Word’s high-scoring FCS playoff win, Scott took center stage, totaling six touchdowns and leading the offense in a 66-point performance. The final score, 66-63, was the highest-scoring game in FCS playoff history.

Scott threw for 219 yards and ran for 166 more.

It’s nice to see Scott’s career getting an ending such as this. He’s a guy who wasn’t highly recruited but gave it a shot at a couple of SEC programs. He’s dealt with injuries but finally found solid footing.

Scott and UIW now advance to the FCS semifinals where they will face North Dakota State.
