The Cincinnati Bengals might have made it through to the divisional round of the playoffs, but they’re in the minority — most of the NFL has already turned its attention to the upcoming NFL draft.

So we thought it would be fun to check in briefly and see what mock drafts have the Bengals doing. Notably, ESPN’s Mel Kiper just dropped his first mock draft of the year, too.

Mel Kiper has the Bengals getting some big offensive line help in the form of Northern Iowa’s Trevor Penning at 25th overall:

“There’s no way the Bengals would take back their choice of wideout Ja’Marr Chase over offensive tackle Penei Sewell in last year’s draft, but you saw this season why so many of us thought they would take Sewell. Joe Burrow was sacked 55 times — third most in the league — and the offense averaged 4.0 yards per rush, which ranked 26th. They ranked 30th in ESPN’s pass block win rate metric. This is a below-average offensive line. Luckily for the Bengals, this is a deep tackle class at the top.”

The Bengals offensive line actually dramatically overperformed in the team’s playoff win over the Raiders. But the point stands — the front office needs to add help for right tackle and guard spots.

Penning, a massive 6’7″ and 321 pounds, would have a shot as a day one starter on the right side and ideally be the long-term solution there, solidifying both tackle spots in front of Joe Burrow for a long time.

Of course, Bengals fans would like it if the Bengals kept getting a worse draft spot with more playoff wins. Either way, Penning would be a great value outside the top 20.

Breaking down Chargers’ picks in Dane Brugler’s latest two-round mock draft

Breaking down who one of the highly touted draft analysts has pegged to the Chargers in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler released his new two-round mock draft on Tuesday.

Let’s break down what one of the highly touted draft analysts thinks for Los Angeles in the 2022 NFL draft right before the pre-draft all-star circuit.

Round 1, OT Trevor Penning, Northern Iowa

The Chargers made the point to address the offensive line last offseason, and it paid dividends except for the right tackle position after Bryan Bulaga went down with an injury.

Even though Bulaga is still under contract, there are legitimate durability concerns, giving reason to believe he is a cut candidate.

If Los Angeles decides to move on from Bulaga, it could choose to solidify that spot either in free agency or early in the draft, as they do here with the selection of Penning.

A three-year starter for the Panthers, Penning was the only lineman named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award this past season, awarded to the best offensive player at the FCS level, after only allowing 13 pressures.

While he needs to clean up his leverage and hand usage, Penning has size, awe-inspiring athleticism, movement skills to match, and consistent physicality in the run game to start right away.

Round 2, DT Phidarian Mathis, Alabama

Mathis was in my recent mock draft at the same spot, and he finds himself again here in Brugler’s.

Arguably one of the most impactful all-around interior defenders in the nation, Mathis amassed 53 total tackles, nine sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and two blocked passes.

With his length, violent hands, lower-body strength, lateral agility, and ability to anchor, Mathis can create interior pressure just as well as he can defend the run at the next level.
