Colts activate S Trevor Denbow from IR

The Colts activated rookie S Trevor Denbow from IR and placed DE Tyquan Lewis on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts activated safety Trevor Denbow from the injured reserve list and placed defensive end Tyquan Lewis on the injured reserve list, the team announced Monday.

Denbow was designated to return last week, meaning the Colts had 21 days since the move was made to either activate him or keep him on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season.

They obviously don’t have to worry about the latter considering they are activating him.

An undrafted rookie out of SMU, Denbow made a strong impression throughout training camp and the preseason. He was kept on the active roster during final cuts and will likely play a special teams role if he stays on the roster.

Lewis, unfortunately, tore the patellar tendon in his knee on Sunday, which will end his season. It’s the same injury he suffered in 2021 but it happened to the other knee then.

Additionally, the Colts announced that punter Nolan Cooney was released from the practice squad after Matt Haack bounced back in Week 8.

Colts designate S Trevor Denbow to return from IR

Colts designate S Trevor Denbow to return from the injured reserve list.

The Indianapolis Colts designated safety Trevor Denbow to return from the injured reserve list, first reported Wednesday by Zach Hicks of Horseshoe Huddle.

Denbow made the initial 53-man roster following the preseason but was put on the injured reserve list due to an injury. He wound up missing seven games but the practice window is now open.

The Colts have 21 days to activate him from the reserve list.

Denbow was a surprise player for the Colts after joining the team as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2022 NFL draft and likely will hold a role on special teams.

Colts sign OT Dennis Kelly, place S Trevor Denbow on IR

The Colts brought Dennis Kelly back to the roster and placed S Trevor Denbow on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Dennis Kelly, placed safety Trevor Denbow on the injured reserve list, and signed cornerback Tony Brown to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Denbow was seen wearing a boot on his foot Wednesday as the Colts returned to practice following the conclusion of the preseason. General manager Chris Ballard told the media at his press conference that Denbow would hit the injured reserve list.

He doesn’t believe the injury to be serious, but it will keep the undrafted rookie off the field for a while.

“Yeah, we’ll make a corresponding move today. I’ll go ahead and tell you, he’s going to go to IR. We’ll see when he gets back,” Ballard said. “I don’t know exactly the timeframe. I don’t think it’s the whole year, but he’ll go to IR today.”

Bringing back Kelly is a relatively big deal for the Colts. Their initial 53-man roster lacked severe depth at right tackle. They have tried to correct that by claiming Luke Tenuta off waivers from the Buffalo Bills and by signing Kelly.

The veteran Kelly missed almost all of training camp and the entirety of preseason due to a knee injury. He had a procedure done at the start of training camp, but it appears he’s close to returning.

The Colts also brought Brown back to the practice squad. He initially survived the final roster cuts but was released Wednesday when the team claimed Tenuta.

After these moves, the Colts are currently carrying 10 offensive linemen and five cornerbacks on the active roster.

It’s been a whirlwind of an offseason when it comes to the safety position. The biggest news came from the surprising announcement of Khari Willis’ retirement at the age of 26. We also saw the return of starting free safety Julian Blackmon during the spring workouts for the first time since tearing his Achilles.
