Rutgers baseball pulled out their first victory of the 2023 season as they wrapped up a three-game series at Campbellover the weekend. On Sunday, Rutgers baseball defeated the Camels 16-3 to end the weekend on a high note, salvaging the final game of the series.
Right-handed pitcher Jake Marshall made his first start as a Scarlet Knight, providing three solid innings. Marshall gave up one run, zero hits, six walks, and three strikeouts, handing the ball over to Grant Besser. Making his Rutgers debut, Besser pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. Besser struck out three Camels, handing the ball to Sam Bello and Ben Gorski to complete the Rutgers’ victory.

In their season opener on Friday, the Scarlet Knights lost to the Camels 11-5, combining for nine hits and 13 base runners (4 walks). Saturday’s matchup wasn’t much better, falling to Campbell 10-0. Rutgers combined for only two hits and five base runners on Saturday. In his Rutgers debut, Christian Coppola pitched 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, two runs (1 earned run), two walks, and five strikeouts (team leader).
The Scarlet Knights finally got the bats going on Sunday, scoring four runs in the first inning. Rutgers junior outfielder Ryan Lasko led off with a walk, starting the four-run inning for the Scarlet Knights. On the bases, Lasko wreaked havoc, stealing second base and scoring on a wild pickoff throw. With the bases loaded, Freshman outfielder Trevor Cohen singled to left field, scoring two pairs of runs for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers’ four runs in the first inning were enough to defeat the Camels, cruising to a 16-3 victory.

Over the weekend, Cohen went 8-for-11 (.727), contributing six RBIs, three runs, and seven hits in his first weekend of college baseball. On Sunday, Junior INF Jordan Sweeney blasted Rutgers’ first home run of the 2023 season.
After their season series opener, the Scarlet Knights are 1-2 as they prepare for the Swig and Swine Classic in South Carolina on Friday.
