Report: Trent Williams was in contract talks with Vikings before pulling out of deal

Reports show that Williams was so close to going to the Vikings on Friday that he was in contract talks with the team before ending talks.

Are you ready for another chapter in the Trent Williams trade saga yet? Well, ready or not, here one comes.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the potential deal between the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings for Trent Williams was so close to being completed on Friday that Williams and his agent, Vincent Taylor, reportedly were already in contract talks with the Vikings, looking toward the future once he was on the team. Then, of course, everything fell apart.

“The Vikings and his agent had actually talked potential contracts — this is something that should have gotten done,” Rapoport said. “Then you get to yesterday and the Minnesota Vikings find out that Trent Williams, from what I understand, did not want to go to the Vikings, and preferred to play elsewhere. That message was communicated, and I’ve received confirmation from several sources, despite the fact that Trent Williams’ agent just released a statement calling it false reporting.

So the deal was so close to being completed that Trent was already in contract discussions with the Vikings, and he still pulled out? What would cause him to do so?

Obviously, Williams and his agent deny all of this, but Rapoport seems confident in his reporting.

“His statement is actually false, and what I reported is true,” Rapoport said. “Either way, he’s not going to the Vikings.”

Trent Williams agent Vincent Taylor speaks out on ‘false reporting’

Trent Williams and his agent are claiming that reports he nixed a trade with the Vikings are false, and they’re continuing to cooperate.

Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams has now had his agent, Vincent Taylor, speak out on his behalf, working to clear up some of the rumblings going on concerning Williams’ ongoing trade situation.

In a statement that was released by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Taylor made it clear that he believes there was false reporting that painted his client in a bad light.

“There has been false reporting that Trent and I objected to particular trades,” Taylor wrote. “I will continue to continue to respect the Redskins right to negotiate a trade, and hope that negotiations quickly lead to a trade that is in the Redskins interest, Trent’s interest, and the interest of the other team.”

All of this is stemming from a report that the Redskins had a deal virtually done with the Minnesota Vikings that would land Williams on a playoff contender with a couple of Day 3 draft picks coming back to Washington. The report stated that Williams made it clear that he wished not to play in Minnesota, so trade talks stopped.

The message from Taylor doesn’t do much to clear up the situation, only stating that they believe the reports that Williams nixed the trade are false. Believe who you want.

Trent Williams denies report that he shut down trade talks with Vikings

Williams says it is not true that he shut down trade talks with Vikings because he didn’t want to play in Minnesota.

Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams has now come out and denied the report that he nixed a trade offer that would send him to the Minnesota Vikings in a deal on Friday, saying that it is “not true,” according to ESPN’s John Keim.

In an article on Saturday morning, Keim broke down the most recent development in the Williams saga as such:

However, sources confirmed to ESPN that the potential trade partners were informed at some point Friday that Williams did not want to play for the Vikings, as was first reported by NFL Network.

A source told ESPN that the Vikings had been among the preferred destinations for Williams and that the teams had discussed a deal for more than a month. But they did not come close to anything until Friday morning, when Minnesota increased its offer to include a second Day 3 draft pick, sources said. The Vikings had previously offered one pick on the third day.

According to Keim, the Vikings finally offered a second Day 3 draft pick in return for Williams, which is something that would have likely forced the Redskins to accept the deal, as they hadn’t received any better offer as of yet. This is when Williams reportedly ended the talks, saying he didn’t want to play in Minnesota.

Regardless of whose side of the story you believe, it is clear that Williams is not going to Minnesota now, and his only trade landing spots left are the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, though both teams have an extremely limited interest at best.

Stay tuned as this saga continues to develop through Day 3 of the draft.

Report: Trent Williams didn’t want to be traded to Vikings, ending trade talks

The Vikings were very interested in trading for Trent Williams before it came out that he didn’t want to go to Minnesota.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said something interesting late on Friday night about the Trent Williams trade situation with the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings.

“At some point over the course of the day, Williams made it known that he would rather not go to the Minnesota Vikings,” Rapoport said. “Essentially, that ended the trade right there. The Vikings took it into their hands, and they took someone they believe is their tackle of the future.”

That ‘someone’ that Rapoport is talking about is Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland, whom the Vikings drafted in the second round on Friday night, officially putting an end to their potential desire to trade for Williams.

ESPN’s John Keim noted that the San Francisco 49ers are a team that remains interested in Williams, but they are waiting to see if veteran LT Joe Staley chooses to retire this offseason or not. Another team that could be a suitable landing spot is the Los Angeles Rams, according to Keim.

What happens with Trent going forward, nobody knows. It’s a messy situation, to say the least.

Report: Vikings trade with Trent Williams is off the table

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Vikings trading for Trent Williams is off the table after they drafted OT Ezra Cleveland in the second round.

Minnesota reportedly was interested in a trade for Redskins tackle Trent Williams, but now it appears that the team’s interest in the Pro Bowl tackle has dwindled.

According to Julie Donaldson, at NBC Sports Washington, the Vikings do not appear to have any interest in Williams at this time. Also NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the trade is off the table.

Also, Minnesota recently drafted an offensive tackle at No. 58, in the second round of the draft. Ezra Cleveland, out of Boise State, went to the Vikings there.

The Vikings offered a day three pick for Williams, per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, but nothing came to fruition with the deal then.

Donaldson reported that it is believed the 49ers still have interest in Williams.

Williams is tough for the Vikings to afford, but he’d be a big boost to an improving offensive line.

Despite Willliams’ talent, there is some concern surrounding him.

Pro Football Focus reported Williams was the highest-rated Redskins player on offense three consecutive seasons from 2016-18, and in 2019 he didn’t play. Per ESPN, Williams held out in 2019-20 after he said there was inadequate medical treatment involving a cancerous growth on his scalp. Later in the season, the Redskins failed him for his physical, according to ESPN.

The Redskins then put Williams on the reserve/non-football injury list after he was unable to play, due to helmet discomfort associated with the removed growth, NFL.com reported.

The Vikings are officially out of the running for Trent Williams

The Vikings drafted a left tackle with the 58th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, meaning they no longer have interest in trading for Trent.

The Minnesota Vikings are officially out on Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams.

After months of trade talks, the Vikings decided to change course in the 2020 NFL Draft, selecting Boise State OT Ezra Cleveland with the 58th overall pick, filling their need for an LT. Now, with the Vikings no longer in the running for Trent, there are slim pickings for the Redskins on the trade market.

A rumor popped up just before the 2nd round started that said the San Francisco 49ers may be interested in trading for Williams, but that was the first anyone heard of it, and it’s hard to think there’s much substance there until we hear more. It’s been a tough 24 hours for Trent Williams, and the future is anything but clear at the moment.

Report: San Francisco 49ers interested in trading for Trent Williams

One of the three teams who are reportedly interested in trading for Trent Williams could be the San Francisco 49ers.

One of the mystery teams who were reportedly interested in trading for Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams may have just been uncovered by the player’s agent Vincent Taylor.

According to NBC Sports Washington’s Julie Donaldson, Taylor said that the San Francisco 49ers are interested in trading for Williams, which makes sense, as head coach Kyle Shanahan spent several years coaching Williams in Washington before he was fired.

The 49ers currently have Joe Staley starting at the LT position, but Williams offers a significant upgrade over the 35-year-old.

There is not yet a reported deal on the table, but the 49ers are now a name to keep in mind.

Report: Vikings offered day three pick in Trent Williams trade before draft, but nothing came of it then

Despite the Vikings attempting a trade for Trent Williams that didn’t work out, the team feels it is “very much in the race to land the left tackle,” according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.

At least a week before the draft Minnesota attempted to acquire Redskins tackle Trent Williams, according to a report.

The Vikings offered a day three pick, per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, but nothing came to fruition with the deal then. It’s not all bad news for Vikings fans, though, because the team feels it is “very much in the race to land the left tackle,” according to Cronin.

Cronin states the logical move is to send left tackle Riley Reiff over along with a draft pick. That could be tough for offensive line depth, considering the Vikings already released Josh Kline this offseason, and Reiff could likely play guard if Williams came over in a trade.

However, Williams is a big boost to the offensive line. And Cronin reported that she has not heard much about Anthony Harris being a trade candidate recently.

Harris is franchise tagged with the Vikings, so his long-term future with the team is still up in the air. He is coming off a 2019 season where he had six interceptions, tied for an NFL best. Not getting rid of him, and being able to land Williams with other assets, really helps the overall outlook of Minnesota’s 2020 season.

The Redskins aren’t in any rush to trade Trent Williams during the draft

Redskins fans may want picks in this years’ draft for Trent Williams, but Washington seems fine with waiting it out over the coming months.

The Washington Redskins don’t seem to be in any rush to trade away veteran left tackle Trent Williams. This is nothing new, but Redskins’ fans have had a sense of urgency to get a deal done with the NFL Draft now taking place, and a desire to secure draft picks that are able to be used this year in return for Williams.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Washington doesn’t feel like they have to move Williams this weekend, and they could be fine with letting this whole situation carry on throughout the summer once again. Of course, this could be a massive bluff to let teams know that they don’t plan to budge on their asking price of an early- to mid-round pick, but it’s impossible to know that for sure.

As of now, the only known team who is in the running for Williams is the Minnesota Vikings, who have a surplus of draft capital that they would have to move in order to get Trent on their roster. There are reportedly two other teams who have shown interest, but they are still unknown to the general public. All of this could uncertainty could change in an instant if one of those teams puts together a solid offer for the Redskins, who may be inclined to ship Williams away in lieu of a valuable pick in this years’ draft. However, there’s a good chance this ordeal carries on throughout the coming summer months once again.

Report: Vikings still interested in trading for Trent Williams

While the trade market for Trent Williams nearly crashed and burned on Thursday night, the Vikings are reportedly still interested.

According to multiple reports, the Minnesota Vikings are still in pursuit of Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams. While the Vikings have been in the race to trade for Williams for some time now, all of the other contenders dropped out on Thursday night when they decided to draft an OT in the first round, leaving only Minnesota and a couple of mystery teams behind.

The Vikings’ initial offer to the Redskins was reportedly a pick some time on Day 3 of the draft, which would be from rounds 4-7, but Washington wouldn’t accept and decided to hold firm. The offer hasn’t reportedly increased, but both sides are still in talks.

The Vikings are in a unique position where they absolutely have the draft capital to trade for Williams, and they might be almost forced into a trade of sorts, be it with the Redskins or another team. With 12 remaining picks in the draft, it’s hard to believe that all 12 of those players would make the final 53-man roster in Minnesota, so it might behoove them to move a couple of picks in order to get a surefire player in return. They also have a few veteran players that could complement Washington’s roster, such as OL Riley Reiff and S Anthony Harris. While an official offer hasn’t been announced, those names have been included in talks.

It’s hard to tell when an eventual deal could happen, but it’s important for Redskins fans to know that a deal is not off the table just yet.
