Celtics recall Tremont Waters from the G League for the first time

With Kemba Walker doubtful to play on Monday, the Celtics brought up two-way rookie Tremont Waters from the Maine Red Claws.

The Boston Celtics have recalled two-way rookie guard Tremont Waters from the G League for the first time this season, the team announced on Sunday.

With Kemba Walker doubtful to play Monday night against the Sacramento Kings due to a neck sprain, the Celtics likely brought up Waters in order to have additional depth in the backcourt. Walker had to be taken off of the court on a stretcher on Friday after a scary collision with a teammate.

Waters recorded 24 points and eight assists Saturday night for the Maine Red Claws in his fifth game of the season. Waters is averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds while he is shooting 44.7% from the field, including 40% from 3-point range.

Waters has yet to suit up with the Celtics in the regular season and could make his debut on Monday. After scoring 24 points in each of his past two games, Waters has played well as of late and has proven to be among the top guards in the G League so far this season.

Tremont Waters, Tacko Fall lead undefeated Red Claws to tie their best-ever start

Behind the leadership of Tremont Waters and Tacko Fall, the Maine Red Claws have tied their best start in team history.

The Maine Red Claws have tied their best-ever start at 4-0 after a win over the Raptors 905 (the G League affiliate of the eponymous defending NBA Champions) on Wednesday.

The Boston Celtics’ two-way players —point guard Tremont Waters and center Tacko Fall — have instrumental in the Red Claws’ scintillating start.

Against the 905, Waters led all scorers with 24 points and 9 assists as Fall chipped in 14 points and three blocks on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, with Claws forward (and Celtics camp participant) Yante Maten adding a double-double with 10 points and 15 boards for good measure in the team’s 113-10 win.

Red Claws shooting guard Bryce Brown added 21 points as well but Celtics lottery pick Romeo Langford remained out while recuperating from a sprained ankle (though will likely be back with the Red Claws once he’s at full health).

Noteworthy because of his gentle nature, Fall continued to get into it with 905 forward Devin Robinson for the second straight meeting, earning his second technical foul of the season for arguing his case a little too intensely when a call on a play involving the latter didn’t go his way (per WEEI’s Nick Friar).

With so much firepower making the trip up from Boston this season, it probably shouldn’t surprise how well the recently-purchased franchise is doing now that the Celtics have full control of the G League team.

When one considers the fact the Langford has only played in one game for Maine this season, the sky is looking like a reasonable limit in a league of teams typically filled with lesser talent.

You can see the Red Claws at their next home game at the Portland Expo Building on Nov. 23 against the Westchester Knicks, the affiliate team of the storied New York Knicks. And for those unwilling or unable to make the trip, NBC Sports Boston is streaming all home games, including Saturday’s.
