Look: Tremayne Anchrum Jr. training with Rashawn Slater, other O-linemen

Tremayne Anchrum Jr., who’s recovering from a fractured fibula, is working out with Pro Bowler Rashawn Slater and other O-linemen

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. got his first chance to start in the NFL last season when he took the field against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2. Unfortunately, he fractured his fibula on the first play and though he tried to keep playing, he was pulled after just two snaps.

Not long thereafter, he was ruled out for the remainder of the season – a crushing blow for the young lineman and the Rams.

Anchrum is working his way back from the injury and there are no indications that his availability for Week 1 is in doubt. Offensive line trainer Duke Manyweather shared a video on Thursday of Anchrum working out with other linemen, including Chargers Pro Bowl guard Rashawn Slater.

Trey Pipkins and Trey Smith were among the other players training with Anchrum, too.

Anchrum won’t be handed a starting job in 2023, but he’ll at the very least compete for one. There’s a logjam of players who want to prove themselves at guard, which includes Logan Bruss, Alaric Jackson and Coleman Shelton.

The coaching staff loves Anchrum and as long as he’s healthy, he’ll be a player to watch next season.

Rams nominate Tremayne Anchrum Jr. for Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

The Rams nominated Tremayne Anchrum Jr. for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

In each of the past four years, the Los Angeles Rams nominated Andrew Whitworth for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, the ultimate sign of recognition for a player’s work off the field. And finally, Whitworth won the award in 2021, his final season in the NFL.

With Whitworth retired, the Rams have nominated a new player for one of the NFL’s most coveted awards. It was announced on Tuesday that the Rams’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is Tremayne Anchrum Jr.

Though Anchrum isn’t a star on a team filled with them, and even though he’s only started one game in three seasons, he’s being recognized for his work off the field, not on it. The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award goes to the player who does great community work and supports charitable causes.

Anchrum volunteers at the Hollywood Food Coalition, the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club, he supports the Jenesse Center, “a nonprofit domestic violence intervention and prevention organization,” and also supported the U.S. Vets gala to raise money to help solve the issue of veteran homelessness.

“I am honored to be nominated for this amazing award, and to even be in the conversation amongst so many people that are doing so many great things around the country and around the world,” said Anchrum Jr., via the Rams’ official site. “I’m also thankful for the people who have given me an opportunity to serve because I want to make a difference. It doesn’t matter if it’s me or someone down the street, whether I win the award or not, it’s about coming together to help each other and our community. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but meaningful actions taken from the goodness of your heart. If we all came together and asked how we can make the world a better place, I think we would get a really good result.”

This year has been particularly tough on Anchrum, too. He made his first career start in Week 2 and on the first play of the game, he broke his ankle. He stayed on the field for a second play, attempting to push through the injury, but he then came out of the game and was ruled out for the season.

Despite the fact that he didn’t play in Week 13 when players showed support for causes they’re passionate about through the My Cause My Cleats initiative, he raised awareness for Set The Expectation, which is “dedicated to ending sexual and interpersonal violence through prevention work with men, advocacy, and engagement with agencies serving survivors and their families.”

The winner of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award will be announced at the NFL Honors show just before the Super Bowl.

Rams OL Tremayne Anchrum Jr. out indefinitely after suffering fractured fibula

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. suffered a fractured fibula in his first career start and will be placed on injured reserve

Tremayne Anchrum Jr.’s first career start was cut short on Sunday after he suffered a leg injury on the Rams’ second offensive play. He was carted off the field and quickly ruled out, and the injury is as severe as initially feared.

According to Ian Rapoport, Anchrum has a fractured fibula and will undergo surgery. He’ll be placed on injured reserve and sidelined indefinitely. Anchrum was filling in at right guard with Brian Allen out, so this injury leaves the offensive line even thinner than it was a week ago.

A.J. Jackson, who primarily plays offensive tackle, replaced Anchrum at guard and played the remainder of the game on Sunday. He’ll presumably remain a starter until Allen returns at center and pushes Coleman Shelton back out to his original position of right guard.

Anchrum was drafted by the Rams in the seventh round in 2020. Prior to Sunday, he had played just three offensive snaps in his career, being active for 14 total in two-plus seasons.
