Former Rams OL Tremayne Anchrum Jr. signs with Seahawks

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. is heading to the rival Seahawks as a free agent

The Los Angeles Rams drafted Tremayne Anchrum Jr. in the seventh round four years ago, adding some versatility to the offensive line as a player who can play guard or tackle. Unfortunately, injuries and offensive line depth prevent him from being a multigame starter with the Rams and now he’s leaving Los Angeles after four seasons.

The Seahawks announced they’ve signed Anchrum as a free agent, ending his tenure in Los Angeles. Anchrum leaves the Rams with one career start, which ended quickly due to a season-ending leg injury early in the game.

Anchrum was a good depth piece for the Rams up front so they’ll need to find another backup guard to take his place, though Joe Noteboom can help on the interior, too.

Guard remains one of the most unsettled positions on the Seahawks roster currently. 2023 starters Damien Lewis and Phil Haynes have been allowed to test the market, opening a path for two new potential starters.

The Seahawks just gave themselves another option at this position, announcing that they have signed former Rams guard Tremayne Anchrum.

Anchrum (6-foot-2, 314 pounds) played his college ball at Clemson. After that, he was picked by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. Since then he has appeared in 31 games, but has only started once.

Anchrum’s first few years he barely played, but last season he played 96 snaps at right guard, raising the possibility he could compete with Anthony Bradford to replace Phil Haynes at that spot.

Both players have been placed on injured reserve; Anchrum will miss the rest of the season, Sean McVay said, and Hill is now forced to sit out at least four games.

Below is the full list of roster moves made by the Rams on Tuesday, with breakdowns of each one included.

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. was slotted into the starting lineup for the first time in his career today, lining up at right guard after the Rams moved Coleman Shelton to center with Brian Allen injured. Unfortunately, Anchrum only made it two plays before leaving the field.

Anchrum suffered an injury on the Rams’ second offensive snap and had to be carted off the field. A.J. Jackson stepped in for Anchrum after he left the game.

The Rams announced that Anchrum has been ruled out for the remainder of the game with an ankle injury.

Liam Coen explains what gives him confidence in Tremayne Anchrum Jr. as a starter

Liam Coen is confident in Tremayne Anchrum Jr. as a starting lineman, breaking down some of his best traits

The Los Angeles Rams are forced to retool the interior of their offensive line with Brian Allen suffering a knee injury in Week 1. With Tremayne Anchrum Jr. being thrown into the starting lineup on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Liam Coen is confident in his ability to be a capable starter.

“He’s had a great training camp. I remember when I was here in 2020, (Tree) Tremayne just had come in and you could just see his process. He’s a super smart, diligent player. He’s sturdy. He can anchor. He’s always showing some of those traits whether it be on the practice squad when I was here,” Coen said. “Last year they said he did a great job of continuing to develop and he had a great training camp. So as you see some of the traits, you see his work ethic, you see his process, and it leads you to believe that, ‘Hey, given an opportunity, let’s see what he can do.’ Physically he can do it.”

Allen is slated to miss a minimum of two weeks for the Rams after undergoing a knee procedure following the team’s Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Amid Allen’s absence, Los Angeles is moving Coleman Shelton from right guard to center and Anchrum will start at right guard.

The Rams took Anchrum in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Clemson. Since then, he’s operated as a backup offensive lineman for Los Angeles.

Throughout the preseason, Sean McVay name-dropped Anchrum as a reserve player that had a standout offseason. Even though the Clemson product has yet to make a start in his career, Coen and the Rams are confident in him being able to step into the starting offense, beginning in Week 2 versus the Falcons.

Tremayne Anchrum Jr.: Rams will ‘be just fine’ with Coleman Shelton at center

Tremayne Anchrum Jr. is confident in Coleman Shelton moving to center in wake of Brian Allen injuries

The Rams’ offensive line suffered a significant blow in Week 1. Brian Allen injured his knee and will miss 2-4 weeks, leaving Los Angeles without its starting center.

Coleman Shelton will move from right guard to center and Tremayne Anchrum Jr. will step in as the starting right guard, giving the Rams a new look on the interior for the next few weeks.

Anchrum spoke to the media on Monday ahead of his first career start, and he’s very confident in the offensive line with Shelton at center. Anchrum shared some great insight on what he learns from Shelton and what makes him a very good lineman on the inside.

“It’s like having a coach on the field. The guy’s incredibly smart. He’s super athletic. He’s very technical. The guy thinks three, four steps ahead,” Anchrum said. “I think having him on my team, playing next to him is such an advantage for me, just being able to soak up information from him like a sponge, being able to watch his techniques. Coleman’s not the heaviest guy but when Coleman’s out there and he’s playing, he’s sharp on his technique. He’s very diligent in his body positions. He’s always in the right positions and you can really take a lot from that when you take how he looks at the game and apply it to how you play, a lot of good things come. Sad what happened to Brian but we’re gonna be just fine with Coleman at center.”

Anchrum said he’s “really excited” to be making his first start, adding that he “worked really hard” to play anywhere on the offensive line, from guard to offensive tackle. That versatility is coming in handy now with Allen out, giving him an opportunity to step in at guard.

Sean McVay: Tremayne Anchrum and A.J. Jackson have been standout reserves on OL

Sean McVay believes Tremayne Anchrum and AJ Jackson have stood out as reserves on the Rams’ offensive line in the preseason.

The starting offensive line of the Los Angeles Rams is beginning to take shape just weeks before their Week 1 bout with the Buffalo Bills. While the starters are all but locked in, Sean McVay believes Tremayne Anchrum and A.J. Jackson have stood out among the reserves on the offensive line.

“Hopefully Logan (Bruss) will be okay. But I thought last week, in particular, Tremayne Anchrum really stood out, and A.J. Jackson,” McVay said. “I think those guys have shown they are capable players. Bobby Evans has played a lot of football. And so it is important to get those evals, especially against different defensive line structures.”

The current starting five on the offensive line appear to be Joe Noteboom, David Edwards, Brian Allen, Coleman Shelton, and Rob Havenstein. Given the importance of depth in the trenches, the Rams are evaluating multiple guys to give them contributions behind the starters.

Anchrum and Jackson are positioning themselves well to secure spots on the 53-man roster for the upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, Evans played every offensive snap against the Houston Texans on Friday, which could indicate there’s a chance he won’t remain with the team beyond the preseason.

The severity of Bruss’ injury, which forced him to exit Friday’s preseason game versus the Texans, is still unclear. The rookie third-round pick was competing for the starting right guard spot, but Shelton has seemingly earned the first chance to start.

Even though they aren’t in line to earn starting gigs, Anchrum and Jackson are catching the eye of McVay in the first two weeks of the preseason.

6 training camp battles to watch for the Rams

The Rams will begin training camp soon and there are plenty of position battles to keep an eye on.

Training camps are right around the corner in the NFL, which means we’ll soon have football on our television screens again. It seems like forever ago that the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl, but the reigning champions have their sights set on defending their title in 2022.

Throughout the offseason, the Rams made a flurry of moves, most notably adding Allen Robinson and Bobby Wagner. While those two guys aren’t at risk of having limited playing time in the upcoming season, there will be a handful of position battles taking place at training camp for Los Angeles.

With mere days until training camp begins for the Rams, let’s take a look at six training camp battles that fans should keep close tabs on.

Where do A.J. Terrell and Tee Higgins land in PFF’s 2020 NFL redraft?

If a redraft was possible, PFF has A.J. Terrell and Tee Higgins falling inside the top 10 after the former Tigers had breakout sophomore campaigns.

Looking back at the 2020 NFL Draft with the benefit of hindsight, some teams should regret passing on a pair of Tigers.

Although linebacker Isaiah Simmons was the first Clemson player to hear his name called in 2020, arguably the most productive Tigers from that draft class are cornerback A.J. Terrell and wide receiver Tee Higgins, who were drafted at No. 16 and No. 33, respectively.

In his second year in the league last season, Higgins was an integral part of the Cincinnati Bengals’ postseason run, leading his team in receiving yards and touchdowns against the Rams in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Terrell was named a Second-Team All-Pro as the unquestioned leader of the Atlanta Falcons’ secondary.

With Terrell and Higgins entering their third season in the league, here’s where Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey thinks the two dynamic playmakers would end up in a redraft, knowing what we know now.
