Recap: Auburn blows out UNC Asheville in Rocket City Classic

The Auburn Tigers have themselves a new win streak. Auburn won its second game in a row Wednesday night, taking down UNC Asheville 87-62.

The Auburn Tigers improved to 7-2 on the young season on Wednesday, defeating 2022 NCAA Tournament team UNC Asheville by 87-62 in Huntsville, Alabama.

It was another great offensive night for the Tigers, as Auburn shot an impressive 53% from the field. [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s team has now scored 191 points over their last two games.

Perhaps the most reaffirming aspect of the night came in the second half, where Auburn has struggled to put the “petal to the metal” against weaker competition.

That didn’t happen tonight. The Tigers scored 48 points in the final 20 minutes, receiving major contributions from forward [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] and guard [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag].

Donaldson ended up leading all Auburn players in scoring with 15 points in the game. Baker-Mazara was the only other Tiger in double figures on a night where sharing was caring with the basketball.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag], and [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag] all contributed multiple made field goals.

2022 Big South Male Athlete of the Year Drew Pember paced both teams in scoring with 23 points.

Pember is a great player who will be playing at the professional level, but his fellow Bulldogs simply weren’t good enough tonight to keep up with a consistent Auburn attack.

UNC Ashville was able to shoot a very-solid 45% from the field, but a 9/18 mark from the free throw line and 13 turnovers doomed the Big South favorites.

As long as Pember is healthy, the Bulldogs will have a chance to get back to the NCAA Tournament this season as Big South Champions.

As for Auburn, the Tigers now sit at 7-2 ahead of a huge showdown against Isiah Collier and the newly-healthy Bronny James on Sunday as USC visits Neville Arena for a noon CT tipoff.

Recap: Auburn’s win streak snapped by App State

Auburn’s win streak ends at 5 after loss to App State

The Auburn Tigers came into Sunday’s game against Appalachian State as 9.5-point favorites to extend their win streak to six games.

Bruce Pearl’s team failed to extend the streak, going cold from the field on the road.

The Tigers’ defense played well once again, holding the Mountaineers to 69 points, but Auburn’s inefficiency on the offensive end failed them on the road.

Auburn scored just 64 points on a sloppy Sunday, shooting 39% from the field and 11% from 3-point range.

Freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] continued to struggle, scoring just 8 points on 2/10 from the field in the first true road game of his career.

Forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was effective again, scoring 21 points on the way to another double-double, but the Tigers supporting staff disappeared in the North Carolina mountains.

The aforementioned Holloway and [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] were the only Tigers other than Broome scored more than 6 points in the game.

The Mountaineers on the other hand received contributions across the board, as four App State players scored in double figures.

Bench scoring was one of the major differences in the game, as the Mountaineers bench outscored Auburn’s 40-27,

Guards Terence Harcum and Myles Tate led upset charge. The duo shot 4/7 from 3-point range on their way to 30 combined points.

Tate hit the most important shot of the game with a dagger 3-ball to put his team up 6 points with 30 seconds to play.

While the loss is disheartening for an Auburn team with high expectations, the offensive woes are common in an early-afternoon road game.

Auburn shooting 3/27 from 3-point range is more of an outlier than the norm, and this team should be able to regroup before they host Big 10 opponent Indiana at Neville Arena next Saturday.

Recap: Auburn cruises to fourth victory of season

Recap: Auburn cruises to fourth victory of season

The Auburn Tigers had a successful return to Neville Arena on Tuesday, blowing out the Alabama A&M Bulldogs by a score of 84-54.

Auburn silenced the Bulldogs early, jumping out to a 49-15 halftime lead behind the strong shooting of forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and guards [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag].

The Tigers ended up losing the second half of the game, but their lead never got lower than 25 points.

Junior guard Eric Lee led the way for Alabama A&M in the blowout loss, notching 10 points on 4/7 from the field.

Lee also added 2 rebounds and a steal in the game.

As for the Tigers, it was guard Chaney Johnson who paced the scoring attack. The transfer was given extra minutes in the blowout and made the most of them, collecting 15 points and 4 rebounds on 6/8 shooting.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] were the only other Tigers in double figures, with 13, 10, and 10 points, respectively.

Forward [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] has shown an early knack for filling up the stat sheet, and he played arguably his best game of the season on Tuesday.

The junior led all players in assists with 6, contributed 6 points, and brought in 4 rebounds. He also added a steal.

Bruce Pearl’s team heads to the Thanksgiving break 4-1 and returns to action a week from tomorrow, when they’ll host Virginia Tech in the SEC/ACC Challenge at Neville Arena.

Recap: Auburn Basketball cruises to Legends Classic Championship

The Auburn Tigers defeated the St. Bonaventure Bonnies to capture the Legends Classic Championship on Friday night.

The Auburn Tigers have won their first trophy of the season.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad improved to 3-1 on the young season Friday Night, defeating the St. Bonaventure Bonnies 77-60 in front of a large crowd at the Barclays Center.

The win secured a “Legends Classic” Championship for Auburn. They won both games by double digits and were clearly the best team in the tournament.

[autotag]Johni Brrome [/autotag] once again led the Auburn offensive attack, muscling his way to 18 points and 5 rebounds.

As will normally be the case this season. plenty of Tigers stuffed the stat sheet in the win. [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag], [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag], and [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] all contributed 8 points or more and could have done more if not for the blowout nature of the second half.

Auburn’s offense was great, but the real story of their early season continues to be the perimeter defense of [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] and [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag].

Tiger guards held the opposition to under 15% from the 3-point line for the second night in a row, as the Bonnies shot just 3/24 from deep.

Auburn also out-rebounded, out-assisted, and out-blocked St. Bonaventure. The Orange and Blue also had one less turnover.

St. Bonaventure’s premier player and Atlantic 10 Preseason First-Team guard Daryl Banks III had just 4 points, giving the Bonnies virtually no chance at making a comeback.

Auburn will enjoy this early season championship before they return to action Tuesday at Neville Arena to take on Alabama A&M.

Social media reacts to Auburn crushing Notre Dame in Legends Classic

Auburn fans enjoyed the Tigers’ win to start the Legends Classic in New York.

The Auburn Tigers stayed hot on offense and the defense stepped up Thursday night as they crushed Notre Dame 83-59 in the Legends Classic.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] inserted [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] into the starting lineup at point guard and the freshman delivered another great performance. The former five-star scored 15 points and went 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

The change forced [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] to come off the bench and he responded with his best game of the season, scoring 10 points and making 5 assists with 0 turnovers.

The win fired up the Auburn fanbase which took to social media to celebrate Auburn’s second-straight win, here is a look at the top reactions.

Notre Dame shoots poorly in loss to Auburn

Man, was that ugly.

Despite the poor prognosis for its season, Notre Dame was one of four teams invited to the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. The Irish drew Auburn as their first opponent, and their next one depended on how they did in that first game. The answer to that question is not great as the Tigers dominated the Irish, 83-59. That means the Irish will face Oklahoma State, another first-time opponent, in the consolation game.

The Irish (1-2) never led in the contest but cut a 15-point deficit down to six before halftime. But the Tigers (2-1) went for the kill out of the break and succeeded with a 15-1 run to begin the second half. The deficit never got smaller than 16 from there, and it didn’t help that the Irish shot only 33.9% from the field, including a paltry 2 of 26 from 3-point range.

Aden Holloway and Johni Broome led the Tigers with 15 points apiece. Jaylin Williams had 11 points, and 10 points apiece came from Chris Moore and Tre Donaldson.

[autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag] reached double figures in both scoring and rebounds for the first time in his career with 18 points and 11 boards, leading the Irish in both categories. [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag] scored a career-high 13 points, [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] scored 12 despite 4-of-20 shooting, and [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] added 10 points to go with three steals.

Recap: Auburn blows out Notre Dame in Legends Classic

The Auburn Tigers played their best game of the young season on Thursday Night, defeating Notre Dame 83-59 in the Legends Classic.

Auburn Basketball is one win away from adding to its trophy case.

The Tigers blew the roof off of the Barclays Center on Thursday Night, cruising past ACC opponent Notre Dame 83-59

Auburn was incredible on the offensive end in this one, shooting 54% from the field and 45% from the 3-point line.

Freshmen [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] was again the star, scoring 15 points while also dishing out 4 assists. He turned the ball over just once.

Forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] has become “Mr. Reliable” for head coach Bruce Pearl. The junior crossed the 15-point plateau for the third straight time this season, finishing with 15 points on the dot in this one.

Broome did miss his third straight double-double of the season, but made up for it by dishing out a season-high 4 dimes.

Forwards [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag] and guard [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] also scored in double figures, shooting a combined 12/19 from the field.

Auburn’s offense was great in the blowout win, but the real story was the Tigers defense.

The Orange and Blue held Notre Dame to just 2/25 from the 3-point line and 34% from the field.

Fighting Irish star-freshman guard Markus Burton came into this game averaging 24 points in his collegiate career. He had just 12 on Thursday night, shooting an atrocious 4/19 in the loss.

This game showed how good this Auburn team can look when they are playing well on both ends of the floor. Results like this are great to see after the Tigers struggled on the offensive end at many points last season.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] has a chance to lead his team to its first trophy of the season on Friday, when Auburn takes on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the Championship game of the Legends Classic.

The Tigers should be favored.

How Auburn’s season opening loss to Baylor affects its KenPom ranking

Early on, Auburn’s offense has shown drastic signs of improvement.

Auburn dropped its season opener to the No. 17 Baylor Bears on Tuesday night in South Dakota, 88-82. What did we learn about the Tigers from the game?

Auburn had a solid day defensively by pulling down 24 rebounds and blocking 10 shots. The bigs were beneficial to Auburn’s defensive output. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] led the charge in rebounding with five defensive boards while [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] blocked five shots.

Offensively, three players ended the game with 10-plus points including freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], who shot 40% from the field en route to a 19-point performance. Cardwell and [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] were the most efficient from the field by connecting on 68% of their shots.

How did Auburn’s loss affect their KenPom ranking? Believe it or not, the Tigers look like an efficient team across the board despite dropping a tough game.

Here’s a look at where Auburn ranks in key data measured by KenPom following Tuesday’s action.

A look at Auburn Basketball’s 2023-24 roster

Get to know the 2023-24 Auburn Tigers before they begin the season!

The Auburn Tigers are set to officially begin the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, Nov. 7 against the No. 17 Baylor Bears at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

This season’s team features a healthy mix of veteran leadership, exciting transfers, and a five-star freshman. As head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] prepares to begin his 10th season as the Tigers’ leading man, he says that he is excited about the parity that his roster brings to the table.

“I’ve not been asked by one player,” Pearl said during his time on the podium at SEC Media Days regarding the set starting lineup. “We’ve got so much parity, so much competition in each position, I’m not sure they want to know, which I think is a good thing.”

This year’s veterans are [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]KD Johnson[/autotag], and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], who have collectively logged a total of 255 games in an Auburn uniform.

The main attraction as far as returners go is center [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag]. Broome joined the Tigers roster last season after spending the first two seasons of his college career at Morehead State. He was great as advertised, as he scored 14.2 points and pulled down 8.4 rebounds per game. He also recorded 10 double-doubles last season and had a stretch of recording a double-double in four straight games to open SEC play. He is expected to replicate those stats this season, as he was named preseason All-SEC.

A plethora of bench options return to the roster this season as well. Broome will be complemented by [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] at the five spot while [autotag]Lior Berman[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] will provide relief to the Tigers’ backcourt.

This season’s roster features plenty of recognizable names, but there are also a few names to familiarize yourself with. Auburn landed two big names from the transfer portal, as well as a few junior college players to beef up its rotation.

Auburn added guard [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag], who was a first-team All-CUSA selection after scoring 20 points per game last season at FIU. [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag], a 1,000-point scorer, also joins the roster after spending three seasons at Alabama-Huntsville. He dropped 15.3 points per game last season, en route to earning the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year award. JUCO transfers [autotag]Addarin Scott[/autotag] and [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] are also expected to contribute heavily this season.

The most notable addition to the program, however, has to be freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag]. Holloway was the No. 16 overall prospect of the 2023 class and was the No. 3 point guard of the cycle. The Athletic recently listed him as one of the top freshmen to watch this season and he is expected to run the point for the Tigers, taking over for [autotag]Wendell Green Jr[/autotag].

Before the season starts, get to know the 2023-24 Auburn Tigers by checking out the full roster, plus their accomplishments as Auburn players, below.

Aden Holloway among The Athletic’s top freshmen to watch

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie expects Holloway to have a great season due to his relaxed nature and ability to score.

Basketball season for the Auburn Tigers is just around the corner, and one of the most exciting storylines heading into the season will be the college debut of freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag].

Holloway was the Tigers’ lone high school signee of the 2023 cycle, but he was considered to be one of the top prospects of the class. He was the No. 16 overall player for 2023 and was the No. 3 point guard according to 247Sports. He is expected to run the point for the Tigers this season, with sophomore [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] playing a complementary role.

Not only will he be vital to Auburn’s success this season, he will be one of the top freshmen in college basketball according to a list from The Athletic.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie lists Holloway as one of the six freshmen to watch this season. Vecenie is excited to watch Holloway develop and says that his ability to score will pave the way for a successful season.

“If I had to pick one other freshman guard outside of (DJ) Wagner and (Isaiah) Collier to have a huge season, it would be Holloway. I loved the skills and polish I saw from him at Hoop Summit in Portland in April. He plays at a relaxed, comfortable cadence that allows him to read the court and make good decisions. But more than anything, what drives his play is his ability to score. He’s one of those guys that you have to be ready to contest from the moment he gets within 30 feet due to how fluid his pull-up game is.”

Holloway and the Auburn Tigers will have the chance to face two of the six freshmen on Vecenie’s list. Auburn will face Kentucky and guard DJ Wagner on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Neville Arena. Isaiah Wagner and the USC Trojans will also visit Neville Arena on Sunday, Dec. 17.
