WATCH: Former Spartan and Kenosha native Trae Waynes discusses Jacob Blake shooting

Waynes has been critical of the police shooting the unarmed Blake in the back seven times.

Former Michigan State star defensive back Trae Waynes has been very outspoken in the aftermath of a police officer shooting Jacob Blake, an unarmed black man, seven times in the back in Kenosha, Wisoconsin. Waynes hails from Kenosha and has been tweeting about the incident over the past few days.

On Friday Waynes made an appearance on Big Ten Network to discuss the shooting and ensuing protests with BTN’s Rick Pizzo.

Waynes is currently with the Cincinnati Bengals but is projected to be out for much of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.

Vikings’ Mike Hughes is excited not to have injuries holding him back

Unlike last training camp, the Vikings cornerback won’t be trying to come back from an injury.

The Vikings will be relying on third-year cornerback Mike Hughes in a big way in 2020.

Gone is Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander. Suddenly, Hughes has become the favorite to be the top corner on the team. More importantly, he’s going into the season healthy, something that wasn’t the case heading into the 2019 season after he was recovering from a torn ACL.

“That’s what I want to reach this year – tap into some new levels I feel like I couldn’t get to because of injuries holding me back a little bit,” Hughes said via Vikings.com. “I’m coming into this year 100-percent confident in my body and how I feel and the work I’ve put into this offseason.”

Hughes also dealt with a neck injury late last season that caused him to miss both of Minnesota’s playoff games.
It feels like we haven’t been able to see the player that Minnesota drafted in the first round in 2018 yet. It never felt like he was fully up-to-speed due to injuries. In 2020, he’ll have no excuses, and he’ll also have every opportunity to prove himself.

AFC North roundup: Bad injury hits the Bengals and a Dez Bryant sighting

AFC North roundup: Bad injury hits the Bengals and a Dez Bryant sighting in Baltimore

The Cleveland Browns aren’t the only team excited to kick off padded practices in the AFC North. Here’s what is going on in Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh as those Browns foes begin to take the field.

Bengals

One of the Bengals big-ticket offseason additions is likely to miss most of the 2020 season. Cornerback Trae Waynes has a torn pectoral muscle that required surgery.

The free agent signed for $42 million over just three years to leave the Minnesota Vikings and join the Bengals. Waynes was expected to start for the Bengals, who are thin on experience at cornerback behind Mackensie Alexander and William Jackson.

Ravens

Remember two offseasons ago when the Browns were seriously courting free agent WR Dez Bryant? Now the veteran wideout is trying to take what might be left of his talents to Baltimore. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL.com, Bryant is going to work out for the Ravens this week.

Bryant hasn’t played since his final season in Dallas in 2017. He hasn’t topped 1,000 receiving yards in a season since 2014 and had a catch rate of just 50 percent in his final three, injury-damaged seasons.

Bryant’s audition with the John Dorsey-led Browns in the summer of 2018 did not lead to a deal

Steelers

Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster would like a new contract with the team as he enters the final season of his rookie contract. And because the Steelers do not do any contractual business during the season, it’s close to now-or-never time for Smith-Schuster to get locked up.

In a media session on Monday, the fourth-year wideout said he wasn’t going to talk about any contract stuff. He’s coming off a down season where he caught just 42 passes in 12 games, though Pittsburgh had QB issues more than WR issues in 2019.

Keep an eye on what happens here, even if neither Smith-Schuster nor the team want to talk about it. If they don’t get a deal done this summer, keeping Smith-Schuster might become financially impossible for Pittsburgh after the season.

Report: Bengals CB Trae Waynes will miss most of 2020 after undergoing pec surgery

It turns out the Cincinnati Bengals will miss one of their biggest free-agent additions for most of the 2020 season, with cornerback Trae Waynes recently undergoing surgery for a torn pec.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided the following: “Big blow for the Bengals: Big-ticket free agent CB Trae Waynes underwent surgery for a torn pec and will miss a sizable portion of the 2020 season.”

The initial reported estimates tabbed Waynes as missing roughly two months before the Bengals found out the severity of the injury and that it required surgery.

The Bengals had signed Waynes to a three-year deal worth $42 million after letting of Dre Kirkpatrick and Darqueze Dennard in an effort to completely overhaul the secondary.

Waynes’ absence means the Bengals will lean into younger upstarts like Darius Phillips, if not look to the open market for help again.

Zac Taylor expands on the Trae Waynes injury news

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor talked more about the unexpected Trae Waynes injury.

[jwplayer MSg5GQD0-ThvAeFxT]

Some unexpected news surrounding the Cincinnati Bengals dropped Tuesday when a report surfaced that cornerback Trae Waynes had suffered a chest injury and could miss roughly two months.

Two months would mean into October at this stage of training camp. And considering camp hasn’t had any padded practices yet, questions about the report were bound to surface when head coach Zac Taylor met with the media.

Taylor told reporters the injury had happened this week during walkthroughs, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Tyler Dragon: “Yea, it just happened this week. It is unfortunate. Those guys have been working hard since they’ve been in the building. It’s just an unfortunate situation. These things happen during training camp.”

But Taylor also brushed off talk about severity, per The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr.:

It isn’t shocking Taylor won’t go into specifics right now, though questions about the subject were only natural. Not only is it odd timing for an injury, Waynes and has reps had previously gone public about not necessarily training at 100 percent because the team was late getting him in the door to sign his free agent deal due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Regardless of the how and amount of time Waynes will miss, the Bengals will now be without a player who could’ve been their No. 1 corner in 2020 and attention now turns to getting his replacements ready.

Report: Trae Waynes could miss 2 months with pectoral injury

The Bengals gave the former Vikings cornerback a three-year, $42 million deal this offseason.

The Bengals might not get their big-time free agent by the start of the season.

Trae Waynes, who signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Bengals this offseason after five seasons in Minnesota, has suffered a pectoral injury that could keep him out until October.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Waynes is getting a second opinion.

This is obviously a huge blow for both sides. We’ve seen these types of injuries linger throughout the course of a season. Hopefully that’s not the case for Waynes.

The Bengals also signed former Vikings cornerback Mackensie Alexander this offseason.

The first big injury news for the Cincinnati Bengals during training camp has arrived via a reported chest injury suffered by cornerback Trae Waynes.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Waynes suffered a pectoral injury that could see him miss two months. He’ll seek a second opinion on the setback.

Waynes, 28, was a massive signing for the Bengals this offseason in free agency via a three-year deal worth $42 million. He’s never missed more than two games in a season since 2015, yet now has an early training camp setback after joining a new team for the first time in his career.

Previously, Waynes had been in the news because he and the Bengals still hadn’t finalized his deal in early July. That wasn’t strange due to player restrictions at team facilities, but Waynes and his reps had said it prevented him from training like normal.

Where do the Vikings defensive position groups rank in the NFL?

The Vikings offense will likely have at least two new starters, while the team’s defense will likely have five.

Unlike Minnesota’s offensive position groups, the Vikings defense will have a plethora of new contributors.

The Vikings offense will likely have at least two new starters, while the team’s defense will likely have five.

The Vikings have a lot of question marks surrounding younger talent on the team, but some of that younger talent might be an upgrade over veteran players such as Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes and Linval Joseph, all of whom were inconsistent at times.

It will be interesting to see whether rookies and relatively inexperienced players will help the Vikings improve, stay the same or regress.

Here’s where ESPN thinks the Vikings rank for their defensive position groups:

A.J. Green, Trae Waynes are a few Bengals swinging in limbo as NFL negotiations continue

A.J. Green and Trae Waynes are two Cincinnati Bengals players who need some clarity on this summer’s proceedings.

[jwplayer fbbypsUl-ThvAeFxT]

The Cincinnati Bengals can’t do much but wait for the NFL and NFLPA to iron out the details of training camp and the mere arrival of players at team families, leaving big names like A.J. Green and Trae Waynes swinging aimlessly in the wind.

Ongoing negotiations between the two parties suggest a reduced roster size for camp. There are also rumblings of players being able to opt out of the entire season.

Meanwhile, Waynes has been left in a sort of limbo after moving his family to Cincinnati. The Bengals are one of many teams that won’t allow third parties to perform the medical checks necessary to finalize his free-agent deal.

In the case of Green, we’re now 10 days out from the deadline for teams to agree to long-term extensions with franchised players. Otherwise, the veteran wideout will have to play 2020 on the tag.

With Green, the Bengals clearly weren’t going to agree to a long-term deal without first seeing if he can stay healthy. Extension money now figures to go to running back Joe Mixon instead.

Keep in mind the current unknown status of report dates and rules means the Bengals — like most of the league — have yet to sign a rookie player to a deal.

In other words, critical details such as the above help to explain why it’s important to keep a close eye on the ongoing talks between the NFL and NFLPA as we get ready to embark on one of the most unique seasons in league history.
