Watch: Billy Horschel, Sam Burns and Jason Day discuss penalty drop in Zurich Classic final round

“I’m one to play it safe, but I was pretty confident that ball landed above the red line.”

AVONDALE, La. — On the 16th tee box, Billy Horschel and Sam Burns sat just two shots back of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. The par-4 was driveable during Sunday’s final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and Burns had a crack at it.

His ball found the water.

Unsure of where it went in, the group had a lengthy discussion on whether or not the ball crossed near the green or if they would have to drop it back in the fairway.

Horschel claimed that he saw the ball bounce first — which video replay backed up — before going into the water, and that would only be possible if it did so above the red hazard line.

Watch the full interaction below:

“So from where we were, Sam pulled his drive a little bit and it was coming back,” Horschel said after the round. “Conversation was did it land above the red line. Well, I saw a ball land and bounce. From the tee box and everything, you really can’t see the red line.”

“The ball was six inches into the water,” Burns said. “If it lands close to the edge, it’s going to kick pretty hard in, but if it lands higher up it’s going to kind of…”

Then Horschel carried on.

“It’s going to take a couple bounces. From what I saw and not being able to see the red line and where the red line was, I couldn’t see below that from the tee box when I got up there, so I figured that ball had to land up on top of the red line. We asked TV and everything, and TV didn’t have clear-cut evidence.

“Travis, his caddie, saw the ball bounce. I’m one to play it safe, but I was pretty confident that ball landed above the red line.”

The pair eventually took their drop near the green where Horschel then chipped the team’s third to two feet and was able to escape with par.

Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele make history with Zurich Classic of New Orleans win

The American duo is the first to win the Zurich wire-to-wire.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele entered the final round of the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans with a five-shot lead and never gave it up.

The pair ham-and-egged their way around TPC Louisiana on Sunday in the alternate shot format to sign for an even-par 72 to finish at 29 under for a two-shot win over Billy Horschel and Sam Burns. The win is the seventh of Cantlay’s PGA Tour career and fifth of Schauffele’s. The American duo also became the first to win the event wire-to-wire.

Horschel and Burns finished tied for fourth last year and improved to runner-up this year, followed by the team of Doc Redman and Sam Ryder, who finished third at 24 under.

Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown hit three balls in the water, make quintuple bogey on par-3 at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Can’t really laugh at them, I make these all the time.

AVONDALE, La. — Golf is hard, even for the professionals. This is one of those instances.

Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown, best buddies from Aiken, South Carolina, are playing in this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Their best finish at this event came back in 2017 when Kisner chipped in on 18 to force a playoff. They would go on to lose to Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith.

Today, the Aiken boys ran into quite the problem at the par-3 9th at TPC Louisiana. It started when Brown found the water off the tee. After taking a drop, Kisner also found the water. Then, after another drop, Brown chunked a wedge into the water again.

Zurich Classic: Leaderboard | Best merch

Not great.

Kisner would find the green with his second attempt and leave Brown with a 13-foot putt for an 8 which he made to save the team from having to write three times the par on their scorecard.

Several teams made a move Saturday morning at the Zurich Classic, including the World No. 1

Five teams are tied for the day’s best score of 9 under.

AVONDALE, La. — Another day of best ball, another day to make a bunch of birdies.

It was a morning to make a move at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and the World No. 1 took full advantage.

Scottie Scheffler and Ryan Palmer, the greatest recruiter on the planet, started with a par, but then went on to birdie four of their next six holes. After turning with a 4-under 32, the Texans put circles on the first four holes of their back-nine scorecard to get to 8 under for the day.

The pair played the next four holes at even par, then Scheffler was able to grab one more birdie at the par-5 18th.

Other teams to shoot 9 under were Callum Tarren/Davis Skinns, Scott Piercy/Sean O’Hair, Justin Rose/Henrik Stenson, and Adam Schenk/Tyler Duncan. All four fired 63s, although Tarren had to overcome an interaction with a gator on his way to the clubhouse. The four teams sit at 17 under for the week.

Also at 17 deep are Will Zalatoris and Davis Riley. During their third-round effort, Zalatoris made all eight of their birdies, including one at the last, on the way to an 8-under 64.

All this may be too late as the leaders are pulling away just halfway through their third rounds. The lead is 21 under as of 3:25 p.m. ET.

This PGA Tour pro didn’t see a gator at first, then went into panic mode at Zurich Classic

Can’t make fun of him, would have done the same thing.

AVONDALE, La. — When you come down south to play some golf, you better expect to see some dinosaur-like creatures. It’s tough not to think of Happy Gilmore when an alligator shows up at a PGA Tour event.

RIP Chubbs.

Anyway, some Tour players handle the situation better than others. If you remember, Cody Gribble gave a gator a little love tap to get him out of the way.

And Rory McIlroy couldn’t get far enough away.

Saturday at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Callum Tarren didn’t see the gator at first, but once he did, he went into panic mode.

Can’t poke fun at him though, we’d all (apart from the crazies) do the same thing.

And if that wasn’t enough, another gator held up play as he made his way back home. Excuse me, Keegan.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a unique event offering the PGA Tour pros a break from the normalcy of stroke play. Rounds 1 and 3 consist of best ball (or Fourballs), while rounds 2 and 4 are alternate shot (otherwise know as Foursomes).

Although the Schauffele/Cantlay team is leading the pack, several teams lurk just a few shots back.
