Kubrat Pulev’s manager pitches Croatia as site for Anthony Joshua fight

The handlers of Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev are discussing the possibility of staging their fight in a Roman amphitheater in Croatia.

Could Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev fight in Croatia?

Pulev’s manager told Bulgarian media that he and Joshua’s handlers are discussing the possibility of staging the title fight in a Roman amphitheater in Pula, Croatia.

Joshua was scheduled to defend his titles against Pulev on June 20 at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London but the fight was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ivaylo Gotsev, Pulev’s manager, pitched the amphitheater as an unusual option. It has been the site of a variety of events, including a Felix Sturm fight in 2005.

No date has been set.

“For our part, we are discussing Croatia,” he told the journalists from Bulgaria, Pulev’s native country. “There is a unique Roman stadium, Pula Arena, and we are in active conversation. We like this variant because it is in Europe, in the middle of the continent. The arena itself predisposes to an unprecedented event in our times.

“There must be mutual consent. We want the conditions and rules to be favorable for both parties. [Joshua promoter Eddie] Hearn is talking about the Middle East, and we have left it to him to communicate in that direction.

“Bulgaria it cannot be, because Joshua will not agree. He wanted to be home, but force majeure led to a change. Kubrat was ready to fight in Joshua’s backyard and even if his family were judges!”

The handlers of Joshua and Tyson Fury, who is set to fight Deontay Wilder a third time, reportedly have had conversations about jumping directly into a title-unification bout. However, Pulev and Wilder evidently do not intend to step aside.

Anthony Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev has target date of July 25

Eddie Hearn is working on a new date for Anthony Joshua’s title defense against Kubrat Pulev after the heavyweight bout was postponed.

Eddie Hearn is working on a new date for Anthony Joshua’s title defense against Kubrat Pulev after the heavyweight bout was postponed.

The fight, scheduled for June 20 at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, was called off because the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Rescheduling it is tricky, according to Hearn.

Hearn said July 25 is a possibility but made it clear that nothing is certain these days.

“We have looked at alternative dates for everything without knowing anything concrete,” Hearn told talkSPORT in the U.K. “We have ongoing conversations with Tottenham to say that if the Premier League extends and does get played in June, then we’ll be pushed back.

“We do have a date of July 25 held at Spurs as well, which is more realistic. It is five weeks after June 20. But we haven’t gone on sale with that, we haven’t made an official announcement in terms of seat details and on-sale dates, so we have got less pressure on that. There is more pressure for Anthony to fight twice this year.

“I know there is a bigger picture going on but everybody in sport, everybody in business right now, needs to be working on a solution, the outcome, what happens when we get through this because it is going to be a horrifically messy time for all businesses, all sports, everything, when we do come out the other side.

“The world won’t be the same again and, in a lot of cases, we will have to start from scratch.”

One solution being discussed is staging the fight in an empty stadium. Pulev, for one, is OK with that.

“I’m ready for June 20, July 25, whenever they say,” Pulev said. “You see, what the situation is, the whole world must adjust to it. There’s no problem (if the fight is) to be without spectators. Everyone would be at home, they can pay-per-view, so I don’t see any problem financially.

“The show could be lost a bit without fans, but it can still happen. After all, it’s a world championship, which must take place.”

Eddie Hearn tries to envision Anthony Joshua’s immediate future

Promoter Eddie Hearn might starting focusing on a Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury fight if Joshua-Kubrat Pulev doesn’t happen fairly soon.

It’s hard to see beyond the chaos of cancellations and postponements, but Eddie Hearn is trying to get a glimpse of what might happen if and when the coronavirus pandemic subsides.

Business as normal? Probably not.

More chaos is the best bet.

From the chaos, a scheduling scramble is likely.

Already, questions are emerging bout whether heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s mandatory title against Kubrat Pulev will happen on June 20 at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London. Pulev told a television network in his native Bulgaria, BTV, that he was told it would not.

The quote was picked up in by U.K. media. Hearn, of Matchroom Boxing and Joshua’s promoter, said he was still planning to move forward with the June 20 bout.

But Hearn also said there were contingencies for the bout to be moved to a later date and perhaps a different site. A complication is soccer. The season is suspended. But if the virus subsides, it will resume at the stadium at about the same time the Joshua-Pulev fight is scheduled.

Joshua-Pulev might have to move. But to when? And where? That opens up other possibilities, Hearn told Sky Sports.

“Well I think, all of a sudden, does the Joshua-[Tyson] Fury fight start taking priority, maybe over a Pulev fight, if the Pulev fight extends beyond the summer,’’ Hearn said. “There’s so much that could happen right now.

“I mean anything is possible, but contractually Deontay Wilder is going to want his fight next, whether that’s in July or whether there’s a force majeure (extraordinary event) that takes that to October, November, wherever.’’

Wilder exercised his option for a third fight with Fury after a stoppage loss to his British rival on Feb. 22 in Las Vegas. The projected day for the bout had been July 19. Now, however, it’s impossible to project anything. Fight cards have been cancelled through the end of April. Boxing, like the rest the sports business, has gone dark. Lights up and down the Vegas Strip are off for the foreseeable future.

“Right now, for us, we’re fighting Kubrat Pulev, June 20, and it could be July 25,” Hearn said.

“But everything is uncertain at the moment, while the country and the world tries to contain this pandemic.”

Anthony Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev formally announced

A day after news broke that Wilder will fight Tyson Fury a third time, the Anthony Joshua-Kubrat Pulev fight is finally a done deal.

Deontay Wilder has lost his title, yet it looks as if he still has some power as a player in the heavyweight division.

A day after news broke that Wilder had formally exercised his option for a third fight with Tyson Fury, the Anthony Joshua-Kubrat Pulev fight is finally a done deal.

Joshua’s mandatory title defense against Pulev on June 20 at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was announced Monday by Matchroom Boxing, Joshua’s promoter, and Top Rank, Pulev’s promoter.

“I’m back in my home city after some time away,’’ Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) said. “A spectacular stadium has been built in North London, and I’m honored to bring the boxing community from all over the world to witness us make history with the stadium’s first heavyweight world title fight. The belts go back up in the air and nothing will stop me from being victorious.”

Negotiations for the bout had gone on for weeks. Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn said they had been held up by “silly things.’’

One of the “silly things’ appears to have been the contract clause that allowed the Fury-Wilder II loser to force a second rematch. With the third leg in the trilogy set and tentatively scheduled for July 18 in Las Vegas, the other key piece in the heavyweight division falls into place.

The Fury-Wilder III winner is expected to face the Joshua-Pulev winner barring something silly, something like a Pulev upset of Joshua, who holds three of the significant belts.

“I am happy to have the opportunity to show the world how strong I really am,” said Pulev (28-1, 14 KOs), a Bulgarian whose lone loss was to Wladimir Klitschko in November 2014 in Hamburg, Germany.

Tottenham’s struggles and inconsistencies, no matter the manager in charge, have been well documented. While the team’s record away has been brutal for a whole calendar year, its home form has been what you’d expect from a club with such quality. Despite Tottenham’s inability to string results together, the team has the talent to beat any club on any day. If Tottenham shows up in good form, it can certainly be a threat to Liverpool’s bid for history.

The Spurs will be no bystanders in this matchup. They are six points behind Chelsea for the fourth spot in the table and the final Champions League spot. The honeymoon period with Jose Mourinho was a quick one as the team has only won once in its last five competitions, including a loss against Southampton and a draw with Norwich City.

For Liverpool, life couldn’t be much better. Not only is it on pace to become only the second club to not be defeated in a Premier League season, but the team is even making progress in other competitions. Liverpool’s bid for a Champions League repeat is on track, while it just knocked out bitter rival Everton in the third round of the FA Cup using a predominantly reserve-laden team. The sky’s the limit for this side as history draws closer and closer.
