Toronto Raptors at San Antonio Spurs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Toronto Raptors at San Antonio Spurs odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Toronto Raptors (4-3) visit AT&T Center Wednesday to take on the San Antonio Spurs (5-2). Tip is set for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Raptors vs. Spurs odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Raptors have won 3 of their last 4 games. They took down the Atlanta Hawks 139-109 as 2-point favorites on Halloween but lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 112-90 as 3.5-point favorites Friday.

Toronto is led by F Pascal Siakam, who is averaging 26.1 points per game. It has many capable scoring options with 6 players averaging double figures.

The Spurs are off to a surprisingly hot start this season. They have won 2 straight games, beating the Chicago Bulls 129-124 Friday and taking down the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-98 Sunday, both at home.

They are also diverse offensively, having 6 players in double figures as well. F Keldon Johnson leads the team with 23.9 points per game while putting up the 2nd-most rebounds (5.4) and 4th-most assists (4.1) for the club.

Raptors at Spurs picks and predictions

Prediction

Raptors 116, Spurs 111

Moneyline

PASS.

The Spurs (+215) will struggle to score if Johnson and Vassell are out. It would also hurt them defensively. I would pass here given the unknown with Johnson.

The Raptors (-280) are absolutely unplayable due to a lack of value.

Against the spread

LEAN SPURS +6.5 (-108).

This handicap really only applies if Johnson plays. He’s key to the Spurs’ entire gameplan, and although he played against the Wolves, he is questionable tonight. Johnson averages 3.9 threes per game, so his spacing helps quite a bit as well.

Nonetheless, the Spurs rank top 10 in effective field goal percentage and offensive rebounding rate. The extra opportunities and how they convert those to points are good reasons to back them.

They’re also 2-1 straight-up at home this season while the Raptors are just 1-2 on the road.

Over/Under

BET OVER 224.0 (-110).

I like this regardless if Johnson is active or not. The Spurs have struggled defensively this season and are 20th in defensive rating.

They also have the league’s 2nd-worst turnover rate. Toronto forces turnovers at the 7th-highest rate, so it should be able to create takeaways and keep the pace up in this one.

The Spurs sit 3rd in pace, and although the Raptors sit 28th, the potential absence of VanVleet may make them step it up.

Raptors at Spurs: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Spurs 117, Raptors 113

Money line (ML)

The Raptors got out to a first-half lead in their last game before getting dismantled by the New Orleans Pelicans 113-99 as 3.5-point favorites in their temporary Tampa Bay digs. Toronto was outrebounded 45-35 and the Pelicans outshot the Raptors from deep 45.2% to 30.4%, sinking five more 3’s.

The Spurs notched an impressive 131-119 road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies as 2-point underdogs Wednesday. Former Raptors PF DeMar DeRozan was outstanding vs. the Grizzlies. He scored 28 points on 7-for-14 shooting, was 14 of 15 from the charity stripe, and added 9 rebounds and 9 assists.

The two teams split last season’s two head-to-head meetings with the road team winning and covering. In fact, prior to Toronto’s 110-106 victory and ATS win over San Antonio last season, the Spurs covered seven straight meetings with the Raptors.

Revenge-game angles are considered square by certain betting communities, but I contend that they make the biggest difference in NBA regular-season games. DeRozan played nine seasons in Toronto, and you know he wants to show up his previous team and have bragging rights over former teammate PG Kyle Lowry. Additionally, it’s tough handicapping teams’ motivation in the regular season, and I love backing teams whose best player I can count on giving a full effort.

GIMME SPURS (+110) for only a half-unit because I’m going to take them plus the points.

Against the spread (ATS)

Just to be safe, I’ll TAKE SPURS +2.5 (-115) for a unit as insurance for the money line wager. Not only did San Antonio cover seven straight vs. Toronto prior to the last meeting, but the Spurs had a winning ATS record last season as an underdog even though it was the first season they missed the postseason in coach Gregg Popovich’s career.

Over/Under (O/U)

Let’s follow the money and TAKE OVER 228.5 (-110). According to Pregame.com, 93% of the money is on the Over, which has pushed Raptors-Spurs from a 225-opening point total to the current price.

The Raptors will have a bounce-back performance offensively against a Spurs team that was uncharacteristically bad in 2019-20. San Antonio was 25th in opponent’s points per game and defensive efficiency last season.

Also, the Spurs offense started to fill it up last season when it played in the bubble—scoring at least 122 points in five of its final eight games—and looked good in the first game this season.
