Season series: Maple Leafs lead 1-0; Toronto won 4-1 on Oct. 24 at Capital One Arena

The Maple Leafs suffered a 4-3 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, snapping an 8-game winning streak in the series. Toronto has suffered back-to-back losses for the 1st time since it dropped 3 in a row from Jan. 13-16.

The Capitals have picked up 3 consecutive victories, including a 5-2 win Monday against the Calgary Flames. Washington outscored the competition 9-4 in the 3-game win streak, and each victory came as an underdog. The Under is 4-2-1 in the past 7 games.

Maple Leafs at Capitals projected goalies

Joseph Woll (9-7-1, 2.89 GAA, .911 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (13-13-3, 3.29 GAA, .890 SV%, 1 SO)

Woll is likely to get the starting nod after Ilya Samsonov allowed 4 goals on 30 shots in a loss in Philadelphia. The Toronto backup has allowed 4 goals in each of his 2 March starts, which are losses at home and on the road against the Boston Bruins.

Kuemper was tuned up for 7 goals on 37 shots in a 7-2 road loss against the Edmonton Oilers last time out on Wednesday. He has allowed 3 or more goals in each of his past 6 starts. He suffered a loss on Oct. 24 in D.C. against the Leafs, allowing 4 goals on just 17 shots.

Maple Leafs at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 4, Maple Leafs 3

Moneyline

The CAPITALS (+120) are worth playing as short ‘dogs at home, as the Maple Leafs (-145) have a tough turnaround after losing in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

The Caps have won 3 in a row, and Washington has cashed in 5 of the past 7 outings, outscoring the competition 21-15 dating back to March 7.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Capitals +1.5 (-210) will cost you more than 2 times your return, and that’s way too much risk for not enough reward if you just can’t bring yourself to bet Washington straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-120) is worth play lightly.

The Capitals have cashed the Over in 5 of the past 6 home games, while the total has gone high in 2 of the previous 4 outings.

For the Leafs, the Over has connected in 3 consecutive outings, with the Leafs going for 4.3 goals per game in the span, while coughing up 3.7 GPG. That’s a good recipe for plenty of Over results.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Toronto Maple Leafs (3-2-0) play the 3rd contest of a 5-game road trip against the Washington Capitals (1-2-1) Tuesday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET (ESPN/ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Maple Leafs vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Maple Leafs were staring a 3rd consecutive loss in the face, trailing 3-1 after 40 minutes in Tampa on Saturday. However, Toronto scored 2 goals in the 3rd, and won it in overtime, picking up a much-needed win.

The Capitals were on the short end of a 3-2 OT loss in Montreal on Saturday, their 3rd loss in 4 games. The Capitals have had a power outage on offense, notching just 6 total goals in 4 games, or 1.5 goals per game (GPG). The Under is 3-1 overall.

Maple Leafs at Capitals projected goalies

Joseph Woll (1-1-0, 1.69 GAA, .949 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (1-1-1, 3.56 GAA, .887 SV%)

The 25-year-old Woll is confirmed for the crease Tuesday. He came on in relief of Ilya Samsonov in Tampa Saturday, benefitting from the comeback in the 3rd period and overtime, turning aside all 29 shots he faced after taking over late in the first period.

Kuemper has allowed 9 goals on 57 shots in his past 2 outings, going 0-1-1 in a pair of road outings. In his only home outing, the veteran kicked aside 38 of the 40 shots he faced against the Calgary Flames in a SOW on Oct. 16.

Maple Leafs at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Capitals 3

Moneyline

The MAPLE LEAFS (-175) are a little on the pricey side, so go lightly. However, since it is just under my personal limit of -180, it is worth playing. It’s better to toss into a multi-team parlay, however.

The Leafs have won 5 of the past 6 meetings in this series, with the favorite cashing in 23 of the past 33 meetings. And with the Capitals (+145) struggling to score goals, the Leafs are the play.

Puck line/Against the spread

The CAPITALS +1.5 (-165) aren’t priced out of line if you’d like a little insurance, and just cannot take them straight up.

The Caps have won 17 of the past 24 home games against the Leafs in D.C., but again, Washington is having some uncharacteristic struggles. Perhaps it will come alive in Spencer Carbery’s 1st game against the Leafs, the team he served as an assistant with before landing in Washington as head coach.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-120) is worth a look, but go lightly.

The Leafs have had no trouble scoring, or allowing goals. However, the Caps have struggled to light the lamp, so be careful.

Still, the Over is 5-1-2 in the past 8 meetings in this series, and 3-0-1 in the previous 4 skates between the teams at Capital One Arena, so that’s a positive.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (34-14-4) take on the Washington Capitals (28-17-9) at Capital One Arena in Washington Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Maple Leafs vs. Capitals odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a wild, 10-7, victory in Detroit Saturday, easily extending their streak with two or more goals to 17 consecutive games. The Over is 12-4-1 during that 17-game run.

The Capitals had a disappointing past couple of games, falling 2-1 in Philadelphia Saturday, and 4-1 on the road at N.Y. Rangers Thursday. That’s now five losses in the past eight games.

Washington has dropped five straight at home since its last win on home ice Jan. 22. The Caps haven’t won in regulation at home in the past 10 games since a 5-3 win, Dec. 29, against the Nashville Predators.

Maple Leafs at Capitals odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Maple Leafs -140 (bet $140 to win $100) | Capitals +115 (bet $100 to win $115)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Maple Leafs -1.5 (+170) | Capitals +1.5 (-230)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +105 | U: -130)

Maple Leafs at Capitals projected goalies

Jack Campbell (23-8-4, 2.55 GAA, .917 SV%, 4 SO) vs. Ilya Samsonov (17-9-3, 2.85 GAA, .904 SV%, 3 SO)

Campbell has coughed up four or more goals in each of his past three starts, and he was on his way to a third straight loss Saturday except for the extraordinary goal support.

Samsonov has dropped each of his past two starts, allowing six goals on 43 total shots in a pair of losses in Philadelphia and New York. He is 4-4-0 with a 3.04 GAA and .907 SV% in seven starts and nine appearances in February.

Maple Leafs at Capitals odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 4, Maple Leafs 3

Money line

The CAPITALS (+115) have definitely had their issues lately, especially on home ice. Their top player, Alex Ovechkin, might be a little distracted lately, too, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and people pressing him for his thoughts on the situation. However, Washington has dominated Toronto in recent seasons, posting 16 wins in the past 22 meetings, and 19 of the past 26 battles in D.C.

Against the spread

The Capitals +1.5 (-230) will cost you over two times your potential stake, and that’s just too expensive. If you like Washington, just play them straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (+105) is the lean, but play it lightly.

As mentioned above, Toronto has scored two or more goals in 17 straight, hitting the Over at a 12-4-1 clip during that stretch. And the Over is 11-3-2 in the past 15 for the Leafs against teams with a winning record, while cashing in five of the past seven meetings in this series. The Over is also 14-6 in the past 20 at home for the Caps.
