Tony Romo weirdly praised Patrick Mahomes’ ‘instincts’ for a basic incompletion toward Travis Kelce

Tony Romo really gave Patrick Mahomes praise for failing.

These days, three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes is the NFL’s unquestioned best quarterback. Almost everything he does on the football field is worthy of commendation because Mahomes is indeed that good.

But CBS’s Tony Romo probably overdid this principle during Sunday’s key AFC battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals.

In the first quarter, Mahomes missed an open Kelce low on a basic slant pattern over the middle. That’s it. He missed. Even the great ones miss sometimes because nobody’s perfect. It’s really nothing to write home about. Like, at all. Except when CBS went to a replay of the sequence, Romo claimed that Mahomes intentionally threw the ball low (?) toward Kelce to avoid a sack and praised his “instincts” for doing so (???).

Uh, I don’t know how to break this to Romo, but Mahomes had a clean pocket and an open receiver. Mahomes wasn’t trying to live to fight another day. He just flat-out missed Kelce. That’s it:

Given his status as arguably the worst major color analyst in the NFL, I’m not surprised Romo would turn an unintentional incompletion into a short diatribe about how great Mahomes is. The funny thing is that Mahomes doesn’t need this kind of extra, extremely undue praise. He doesn’t need people spinning a fake, short narrative about missing an open playmaker. Because he’ll almost always make up for any mistakes, no matter how big or small.

But I suppose that’s probably par for the course for Romo in the booth.

Bengals get Tony Romo on the call again for showdown vs. Chiefs

The Bengals and Chiefs again get Tony Romo in the booth.

When the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Kansas City Chiefs for their Week 2 matchup of the 2024 regular season, fans will hear a familiar voice on the call for the 4:25 p.m. kickoff on CBS.

Yet again, the Bengals game against the Chiefs will feature Jim Nantz and Tony Romo in the booth along with Tracy Wolfson, and Bengals fans are growing even more tired of hearing Romo call their games, especially big ones against Kansas City.

The last time the two teams matched up late last season, the same broadcast crew called it. Romo and Nantz have also been in the booth for both of the AFC Championship games the two teams played against each other, as well as a game on Jan. 2, 2022, when Ja’Marr Chase had 11 catches for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bengals are coming off of an ugly Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots, and with Ja’Marr Chase still without a new contract and Tee Higgins out with an injury last week, fans of the team likely have more important things they are worried about than who will be the voice they hear during that game, but it still wasn’t welcome information when Jay Morrison revealed it on Twitter.

Announcers set for Chargers vs. Raiders Week 1 game

Find out who will be calling the Week 1 game between the Chargers and Raiders.

The Chargers will kick off the 2024 regular season against the Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1:05 p.m. PT.

The AFC West divisional bout will be televised on CBS and Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will have the call.

Los Angeles looks to turn things around under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has a proven track record of winning at all of his coaching stops in college and the NFL.

Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman seek to enforce a physical brand of football, and it starts with establishing the run. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins will handle the backfield duties.

Justin Herbert will be without Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, but he’s proven to be one of the premier players at his position, throwing to lesser-known names. Joshua Palmer headlines the wide receiver room, with Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and DJ Chark making up the rest.

After finishing as one of the worst defenses in the league, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will look to turn things around. Minter will have Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, Asante Samuel Jr., Derwin James and Alohi Gilman at his disposal. Poona Ford, Kristian Fulton and Denzel Perryman are the notable new additions.

3 reasons Dak Prescott would be crazy to re-sign with Cowboys now

While the Cowboys continue to lose almost every major negotiation, let’s not pretend like the QB doesn’t have other reasons to hesitate. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys took care of their most pressing contract situation last week, extending wide receiver CeeDee Lamb for another four years through the 2028 season. Lamb is now making the most net income of any non-QB, playing half his games in no-state tax Texas and averaging $34 million a season.

Lamb was one of three superstars Dallas had to worry about, but issues remain on the contract front when it comes to quarterback Dak Prescott. Like Lamb, Prscott is entering the last year of his deal. Unlike Lamb, Prescott reported to offseason activities and training camp. With much conversation about whether or not the team will be able to reach an agreement with their franchise player, along with whether or not they should, one question hasn’t been asked very often.

What is the incentive for Prescott to agree to a deal now? Here are three reasons why he may be more willing to stay on the market than people may realize.

Cowboys History

The Cowboys have been blessed with two finds at the quarterback position; do fans realize that Tony Romo joined the club over 20 years ago? While Romo likely isn’t going to make the Hall of Fame, he and Prescott have regularly been among. the league’s best quarterbacks at various times in their tenure.

Yet the organization cannot make progress in the playoffs. From Prescott’s perspective, he’s 5 months away from being able to choose his own franchise and it could be one that has proven capable of putting together a world champion some time this millenium.

Bidding war maximizes his value on the street

Even if Prescott intends to remain with the Dallas organization, why would he not maximize his value? The 2025 free agent market is absolutely barren, unless Russell Wilson or Justin Fields rejuvenates their stock to a tremendous level this year.

The bidding war for Prescott would be absolutely insane, regardless of what his detractors think about him. Prescott is a proven winner with a .640 regular season winning percentage, and has two top-six MVP finishes in his eight years. Kirk Cousins has a career .531 winning percentage, has never sniffed an MVP vote is 36 and just got $45 million a season.

With Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa signing extensions with their team, there’s going to be a bidding war, especially with the 2022 QB class falling into the abyss already.

Resigning without knowing the coaching staff and system makes little sense

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter of their wild card playoff game Sunday, January 14, 2024 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Green Bay defeated Dallas 48-32.

The final point, who knows what’s going on with Dallas next season? Prescott has now played through three systems, learning under Jason Garrett while winning rookie of the year, while excelling with both Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy’s system. But Dallas could turn over the apple cart this offseason with their coaching staff.

Signing now, while the front office could certainly lean on his input, limits his options as far as his next system should the Joneses move on from McCarthy. Waiting to see what they do following the season gives Prescott additional leverage in the decision, for better or worse. If he doesn’t like the hire, he can go find a team who he does agree with their philosophy. And if there’s an opening for a team he’s dreamed about playing for? Even better.

There are plenty of reasons why Prescott would want to sign with Dallas before the season starts, but these are tangible explanations why the ball isn’t exactly in Dallas’ court, regardless of what their offers look like.

Tony Romo praising Tom Brady joining NFL announcing is like a dinosaur hyping up comets

Tony Romo doesn’t seem to realize he’s staring a comet right in the face.

I don’t know where Tony Romo got the idea that he’s this respected NFL announcing ambassador, but he needs to stop. Immediately. No one in their right mind is looking at CBS’s lead color commentator as this shining beacon of broadcasting light in 2024. These days, I’d venture to guess that very few view him as a leading example to follow.

In fact, from talking over Super Bowl-winning touchdowns to aimless live rambling that is often barely coherent, most pro football fans now probably (and rightfully) think the exact opposite of Romo in the booth.

Yet, here he is, opining about the legendary Tom Brady taking over as Fox’s top color analyst this fall. A morsel of self-awareness, please!

If you listen closely to the way Romo talks about Brady in a recent interview on CBS Mornings, you’d almost get the sense he doesn’t think the 7-time Super Bowl champion quarterback could supplant him as the most beloved modern NFL broadcaster.

It’s Romo’s not paying much of any attention to Brady’s debut and likely announcing ascendance.

More from CBS Mornings:

“We all know Tom [Brady] well,” Romo said. “You gotta remember, Jim’s [Nantz] done the most Tom Brady football of anyone (in broadcasting) — literally over 100 games. I think it’s great. I think it’s great for the industry that people want to go into this position and these roles. I think you find that the NFL has that grab. This [quarterbacks becoming announcers] was not always that, but Troy Aikman, I felt like really started this.

“Now, it’s part of possibly an arc in your career. But Tom’s gonna do great. He’s working as hard as anybody.”

I understand Romo is trying to be classy here. I know he’s making a point about quarterbacks becoming more comfortable talking to fans every Sunday. That is a welcome development! And I know this is him mostly being magnanimous toward a future “competitor” like Brady. The nature of NFL broadcasting on CBS (which focuses on AFC matchups) and Fox (which centers on NFC duels) doesn’t really make Brady a rival to Romo, even if their networks are fighting over the same afternoon time slots on Sundays. The generally equal conference split makes this more of an apples-and-oranges comparison than we’d like to admit.

At the same time, Romo does understand he’s lost his mantel as The Guy Who Correctly Predicts Plays Before They Happen, right? Surely, he knows that his work announcing games has become rote at best and grating at worst? Right?

Someone like Brady might not technically be a competitor, but that’s definitely not how NFL fans will view this dynamic in the long run. Everyone reading this is old enough to remember the direct Greg Olsen comparisons. It’ll be the same line of thinking for Brady.

If Brady’s awesome at the job for Fox — unfortunately, as much as it pains me to admit out loud in public, he probably will be — then he will be propped up by the football media landscape more than Romo ever was. It won’t be close. Because of Brady’s well-established, built-in playing resume, he can be so good at announcing that he might almost make the days of Romo offering insightful, worthwhile analysis seem like they never happened. And to be candid, that feels so long ago that I’m not sure it happened anymore myself.

Romo talking about how Brady working for Fox is excellent for the broadcast industry is him missing the mark on his own place in football. For cinephiles, it’s like Blockbuster praising Netflix for how it will revolutionize the DVD market. For you work-from-home 9-5ers, it’s like Skype giving Zoom some public shine for jumping into the video call space. For you history buffs out there,  it’s like Napoleon Bonaparte telling British naval commander Horatio Nelson, “good job” for hamstringing his navy.

You get the idea.

Kudos to Romo for giving Brady some advice and helping him ease into a new, demanding job. I’m certain not many other people would’ve been nearly as kind in his position, and that’s the point.

Why did Tony Romo fly to Wisconsin directly after playing celebrity golf in Lake Tahoe? More golf

He flew across the country to Wisconsin just hours after playing in the American Century Championship.

WAUKESHA, Wisc. – Within 96 hours, Tony Romo played 72 holes of golf.

He still can’t get enough of it, even if he’s never seen the course before.

The former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro quarterback and CBS commentator from Burlington competed Monday in the 123rd Wisconsin State Amateur Golf Championship at The Legend at Merrill Hills.

He flew across the country to Wisconsin just hours after playing in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

“It’s fun,” he said of the celebrity tournament. “We take a lot of family and friends. We probably had 20 people or so. That’s one of our favorite trips of the year.

“It was a blast outside of golf. When you play good golf, everything’s more fun.”

Romo is no stranger to the American Century Championship, having won it in 2018, 2019, and 2022. He came up short this year, though, tying with Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Doug Pederson for 38th.

Romo sought to redeem himself in the State Amateur, despite having to make a quick transition from the American Century Championship.

He’s no stranger to the immediate turn.

Last year, due to a delayed flight, Romo didn’t get in until 3:30 a.m. He knew, though, that he had a special opportunity to play with his dad, Ramiro, who also qualified for the opening round at the Erin Hills golf course.

Although Ramiro isn’t playing this year, Tony still made the trip after a disappointing performance in Lake Tahoe.

“It means a lot,” he said. “If it wasn’t this tournament, I don’t think I would probably be coming. It’s a long week (at Lake Tahoe). I feel like it just shows how much I want to play and how good the WSGA does to put this on.

“It’s gonna be as good a golf course as you’re gonna play every year, condition-wise. It’s as well done as any tournament you’re gonna play in the state. They’ve really outdone themselves this year and last year, each time I’ve played.”

Unfortunately, the struggles Romo faced in Lake Tahoe followed him for his first-ever round of golf at The Legend at Merrill Hills.

In the first round, he finished 14-over-par 85 and is tied for No. 149, four strokes out of last place.

“All the above,” he said when asked about multiple potential injuries.

Before the celebrity tournament, Romo was in France with family. He felt the turnaround between France and Nevada also threw off his game.

“Chipping, wedge game has been poor when I came back,” he said. “I’ve been hitting the ball fine. When I came back it just felt a little foreign. Just trying to work out the kinks now.”

Even with NFL training camps opening up next week, CBS’ main color commentator has some more golf tournaments lined up. He’s set to play in the Texas State Open and the Utah State Open.

Romo’s plan for improvement in the next couple tournaments?

“I think in the future I need to see the golf course before I play it,” he said.

“That’ll probably help.”

Seahawks “one-in-a-million” moments

Seahawks “one-in-a-million” moments

Fate. It favors fools, little children, ships named Enterprise, and professional football teams in Seattle, Washington. For whatever reason, the Seahawks always seem to find themselves invovled in wildly memorable moments, and  fortune seemingly smiles on them more often than not.

There are no shortage of iconic moments in franchise history, but there are a few that stand out more than others. Moments seared into our collective memory. Moments to smile on and bring up when talking (or arguing) among friends at a bar or cookout.

The Seahawks shared on their official Twitter accout some of the most memorable moments. Oddly enough, the Green Bay Packers have suffered the receiving end of a couple of these.

Now that we’ve watched this highlight, I have a question for all the 12’s reading this: which moment was your favorite? Personally, I will never forget where I was when the infamous Fail Mary occured, the reaction online, and the discourse for the rest of the week among everyone I knew in my life.

Hopefully the Seahawks can add a few more to the list during the 2024 season.
