Cowboys dead last in NFC spending at this position, just $3 million before free agency, draft

A review of what the Cowboys have at RB, what they’ll do once the league year starts with free agency and the draft.

The Cowboys have completed the mission. After heavily investing in the running back position in both draft and financial capital, things have bottomed out. In 2016, Dallas invested the No. 4 overall pick on the position, drafting Ezekiel Elliott. Three years later they invested financially making him the highest paid player in the history of the position.

Four years after that, while still carrying $just under $6 million in dead money after releasing Elliott, they slapped a $10 million franchise tag on Tony Pollard. Still, even in 2024, they still had $6.4 million in space being used by Elliott’s old contract. So it is just now that they’ve landed on the less invested side of things in that regard.

And landed their with authority, it might be added. The Cowboys churned out another 1,000 yard rusher, but he is a free agent, leaving just three players with under 100 total carries amongst them remaining on the roster.

So what comes next?

Rostered: $3.09 million in cap space

The Cowboys have three players under contract for 2025, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis and Hunter Luepke, who count for only $3.09 million in cap space. That’s the lowest total among all NFC teams and 30th overall.

None of the three backs have proven much, with only Luepke feeling like he has a great chance to stick.

Pending Free Agents

Rico Dowdle, the team’s starter the majority of the season and bell cow the last half of it, hits free agency for the first time. Undrafted in 2020, an injury stole his 2021 season and it took him until this year to become a consistent contributor. He’s seen as the fourth or fifth-best back available in free agency after averaging 4.6 yards a carry on his way to 1.079 rushing yards with another 249 through the air.

Dowdle’s average is a true representation of what to expect on any given carry, as his longest run was just 27 yards and he rarely broke off big gains.

The Cowboys are likely looking for someone with more juice to lead the way in their new play-action based system.

Prediction: Dowdle signs elsewhere.

External Free Agents

The Cowboys are likely going to want to meet all types of runners on their offseason roster before making their way to the draft. Luepke is the short-yardage guy, and he’s expected to make the 2025 roster regardless. Davis has the all-around label and Vaughn… well Vaughn has a touching story.

The Cowboys will likely be looking for a speed merchant style of back, but more than likely at a discount.

Prediction: Jordan Mason could see free agency this year. He’s a restricted free agent but was undrafted and it would be a big ask for the 49ers to offer him a second-round tender while also paying Christian McCaffrey big money. If he comes free, he’s the guy that would make a ton of sense to spend the NFL version of the mid-level exception on. A two year, $7 million deal with two void yearsbmay get him in the fold.

2025 NFL Draft

The Cowboys are expected to be players in the market for a top running back in a deep class. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty may slide down to No. 12 and make the decision very hard on Will McClay and company.

If not, Omarion Hampton (UNC) and Treyveon Henderson (OSU) could be second and third-round targets who offer breakaway speed at any given moment.

Prediction: The Cowboys go elsewhere with their top pick, Hampton is snatched before they hit the clock in Round 2 and Henderson is the pick in Round 3.

Wasted Free Agency: Cowboys projected to have just 5th-most comp pick value in 2025

The Cowboys saved cap space and money, but they basically traded away their exiting 2024 free agency class for Jonathan Mingo. It probably wasn’t a coincidence. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys let a lot of talent walk out the door in 2024. Not only dd defensive coordinator Dan Quinn leave to become the head coach of the Washington Commanders, but the team lost significant free agents as well.

Dallas didn’t try to replace them with much either, meaning that they will likely receive the maximum number of compensatory picks in April’s draft. But just because they maxed out on picks, doesn’t mean they made the right decision. Dallas didn’t seem to get a ton of value, compared to the holes that were left on their roster.

In exchange for allowing OT Tyron Smith, DE Dorance Armstrong, DE Dante Fowler, center Tyler Biadasz and RB Tony Pollard walk in free agency, OverTheCap is predicting Dallas will receive four compensatory draft picks in 2025.

And while Dallas is tied with Baltimore for the most projected picks, they only rank fifth among 14 teams in terms of comp pick value. They are set to receive just three fifth-round picks and one sixth-round pick.

Those picks, projected to be No. 171, No. 173, No. 175 and No. 212, total 73.2 points on the trade value chart.

That’s less than half the value of league-leading Miami (147), and trailing Minnesota (112), Baltimore (83.5) and San Francisco (73.5).

73.2 is almost the exact value of the Cowboys’ missing fourth rounder, sent to Carolina in exchange for WR Jonathan Mingo. Pick No. 112 is worth 70 points on the value chart.

Comp picks are awarded based on a formula centered around how many qualifying free agents a team loses, cancelled by ones they sign, and adjusted for contract value. The Cowboys, like the Ravens, pay special attention to their comp-pick ledger each season, so it’s more than likely they knew what the value of their incoming picks would look like when they traded for Mingo.

Former NFL All-Pro praises Titans’ Tony Pollard: ‘Largely overlooked’

One former NFL running back offered up some high praise for Tennessee Titans RB Tony Pollard, who he feels goes “largely overlooked.”

There is no doubt that the Tennessee Titans struggled in 2024. At 3-14, they fired their general manager and are headed into rebuild mode with Mike Borgonzi steering the ship.

Offensively, it was a battle each week. Uneven quarterback play coupled with a porous offensive line never allowed the offense to truly get into a rhythm. If Tennessee did have a bright spot on offense, it was the rushing attack, which was productive when called upon.

Both Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears had their moments, with Pollard proving to be a solid free-agent investment. Unfortunately, the game plan did not accommodate this part of the attack and it would inexplicably disappear throughout the season.

Pollard was extremely productive considering he battled a nagging ankle injury for most of 2024. He notched his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.

In 2024, Pollard had 260 carries for 1,079 yards and five touchdowns and added 41 receptions for 238 yards. His performance was also noticed by former All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew in his final running back rankings for 2024.

Largely overlooked while operating in a subpar offense with a revolving door at quarterback, Pollard quietly put up three 100-yard performances on the way to his third straight 1,000-yard season. He was the most consistent part of Brian Callahan’s attack this season, and with improved QB play in 2025, Pollard could easily build on his first season in Tennessee.

Pollard may never reach the status of Derrick Henry in Tennessee, but the veteran back can definitely make an impact moving forward. If the Titans can improve play calling, fine-tune the offensive line, and solidify the quarterback position, there is no doubt that if Pollard remains healthy, he can be the engine that makes their offense go.

Titans injury report: Amani Hooker out, Tony Pollard questionable

The Tennessee Titans released their final injury report and see multiple starters led by safety Amani Hooker out for Week 18.

The Tennessee Titans finished up their work on the field in preparation for their Week 18 battle with the Houston Texans on Friday and have a lot of injury questions heading into the weekend.

With the season wrapping up, the Titans will see multiple starters sidelined on Sunday. After practice, the team released their game statuses for the battle and eight players will not suit up for the finale including kicker Nick Folk, edge Arden Key and safety Amani Hooker.

Titans’ Tony Pollard and Arden Key have added incentives in Week 18

The Tennessee Titans are always motivated against the Houston Texans, but players such as Tony Pollard and Arden Key have added motivations this week.

As the Tennessee Titans head into their season finale on Sunday, there is a push to end the season on a high note. For some players, there will be added motivation to reach certain performance incentives that could earn them some extra cash in 2024.

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac breaks down some of the more notable incentives still available to players heading into Week 18.

Tennessee Titans

S Amani Hooker secured $500,000 with his 5th interception. The 26-year-old is under contract through 2025 at a non-guaranteed $8.1M.

RB Tony Pollard needs 83 rushing yards to secure an extra $250,000. There’s another $200,000 available if he scores twice on the ground as well.

LB Kenneth Murray needs a half sack this weekend to secure a $250,000 bonus. The 26-year-old holds a non-guaranteed $7.5M for 2025.

EDGE Arden Key is a sack and a half away from securing a $500,000 bonus. The 28-year-old holds a non-guaranteed $7M in 2025.

Unfortunately, for all of these players, the injury bug has had an impact on their production in 2024. While Amani Hooker has met all of his available incentives, the others are in jeopardy or have already missed out.

Running back Tony Pollard may have the easiest path to meeting his incentives even after missing Week 17. With Tyjae Spears being held out after suffering a concussion and head coach Brian Callahan rotating quarterbacks, Pollard should again be the focal point of the offense. Rushing for 83-yards and two touchdowns is not out of the question. In Week 12, he carried the ball 24 times for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Outside linebacker Arden Key has a chance to reach his incentives if he plays. The veteran edge has not practiced so far this week due to an injury and his status is undetermined. In the first meeting he was basically invisible, recording only two tackles, but likely matching up against a reserve offensive tackle could open the door if he plays.

Unfortunately, linebacker Kenneth Murray will fall just short. The veteran linebacker was placed on injured reserve during Week 17 and will miss the final two games of 2024.

Tune in to see if any of these players can reach these incentives when the Titans close out the season on Sunday against the Texans in Week 18 action.

Titans injury report: Amani Hooker out, Tony Pollard limited

The Tennessee Titans returned to the practice field and watched multiple starters led by Amani Hooker sidelined.

The Tennessee Titans were back on the practice field Wednesday, ramping up preparations for their Week 18 tussle with the Houston Texans.

The Titans have numerous players dealing with nagging injuries, something that is common at this stage of the season. Unfortunately, for some, this may cause them to miss the season finale, or even be the end of their Titans’ career.

Safety Amani Hooker headlined the group that was held out due to injury. In all, six players missed practice on Thursday, most of whom are battling nagging injuries and have been listed in previous weeks.

Tennessee did receive some positive news with running back Tony Pollard returning in a limited capacity and guard Dillon Radunz practicing full. Both players missed the team’s Week 17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars because of injuries.

Titans downgrade Tony Pollard, Amani Hooker to out

The Tennessee Titan downgraded Tony Pollard and Amani Hooker to out for the Week 17 battle with the Jaguars.

The Tennessee Titans received some bad news Saturday on the injury front that will have an impact on their Week 17 battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tennessee announced that they have downgraded running back Tony Pollard (ankle/illness) and safety Amani Hooker (shoulder) to out. Both Pollard and Hooker entered the weekend questionable on the final injury report.

With Pollard sidelined, Tyjae Spears should see the bulk of the action and build upon his string of impressive performances. Pollard has been battling an ankle injury, but a report surfaced that he was being left in Nashville while battling the illness.

Hooker is the latest player in the secondary to miss time due to injury. Either safety Kendell Brooks or Mike Brown should step into his role, but this will be a big loss for the defense against the Jaguars.

The Titans and Jaguars will meet at EverBank Stadium on Sunday in Week 17 action.

Titans downgrade two starters to out vs. Jaguars

Titans downgrade two starters to out vs. Jaguars

The Tennessee Titans downgraded starting running back Tony Pollard and safety Amani Hooker from questionable to out against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 on Saturday.

Pollard (ankle) and Hooker (shoulder) were both listed as questionable on Tennessee’s final injury report. Pollard was reportedly expected to play through his injury but came down with the flu after the Titans practiced on Friday.

Pollard has rushed for 1,017 yards and five touchdowns over 238 carries this season and added 41 receptions for 238 yards. Hooker has recorded 71 total tackles with four for loss, five interceptions, nine defended passes and two forced fumbles.

Tennessee previously ruled starters, right guard Dillon Radunz and kicker Nick Folk, out against Jacksonville on Friday. Starting wide receiver Tyler Boyd is questionable to play.

The Titans signed kicker Matthew Wright, guard Arlington Hambright and linebacker Raekwon McMillan to their active roster from their practice squad, and elevated offensive lineman and safety Gervarrius Owens from their practice squad after ruling Pollard and Hooker out.

The Titans released cornerbacks Tre Avery and Gabe Jeudy-Lally from their active roster in corresponding moves.

Jaguars vs. Titans is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

Titans injury report: Tony Pollard out, Luke Gifford returns

The Tennessee Titans returned to the practice field and watched multiple starters led by Tony Pollard sidelined.

The Tennessee Titans were back on the practice field Thursday, ramping up preparations for their Week 17 tussle with the Jacksonville Jaguars and watching numerous players sit out due to injury.

The Titans are definitely thin at inside linebacker after placing Kenneth Murray on injured reserve and subsequently releasing recently acquired David Long Jr. after he failed his physical. They did receive some good news at the position as Luke Gifford practiced fully as he navigates the concussion protocol and might return.

Running back Tony Pollard headlined the group that was held out due to injury. In all, six starters missed practice on Thursday, all of whom are battling nagging injuries and have been listed in previous weeks.

Wide receiver Bryce Oliver was added to the injury report with a knee injury and was limited on Thursday.

The Titans’ complete injury report for Thursday can be found below.

Did not participate: WR Tyler Boyd (foot), K Nick Folk (abdomen), RB Tony Pollard (ankle), LB Otis Reese (ankle), S Amani Hooker (shoulder), OG Dillon Radunz (shoulder),

Titans injury report: Tony Pollard, Nick Folk out

The Tennessee Titans welcomed T’Vondre Sweat, Jeffery Simmons and Daryl Worley back to practice on Thursday on their injury report.

The Tennessee Titans hit the field on Thursday to continue their preparations for their battle with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and welcomed back a couple of players.

This is some great news for a team that enters the week battered and bruised. After seeing 10 players sidelined due to injury on Wednesday, that number dropped to seven. That is still a large number but it is a step in the right direction. Jeffery Simmons, T’Vondre Sweat and Daryl Worley all returned and were full participants.

The biggest piece of news on the injury front came from special teams coach Colt Anderson, when he stated that the abdominal injury that is bothering kicker Nick Folk is a remnant of the groin injury that bothered him last week. If he can’t go this week against the Colts, expect Brayden Narveson to be activated from the practice squad to take his place.

Wide receiver Colton Dowell was again limited. At this stage there is no timeline for his return, but practicing again is a great first step.

The Titans’ complete injury report for Thursday can be found below.

Did not participate: LB Kenneth Murray (hamstring), WR Tyler Boyd (foot), K Nick Folk (abdomen), RB Tony Pollard (ankle), LB Luke Gifford (concussion), LB Otis Reese (ankle), Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (ankle)

Limited participant: WR Colton Dowell (knee)

Full participant: CB Roger McCreary (shoulder), OT Jaelyn Duncan (hamstring), DT Jeffery Simmons (NIR/rest), DT T’Vondre Sweat (shoulder), DB Daryl Worley (calf),
