New PowerWash Simulator DLC invites you to clean Lara Croft’s house

FuturLab and Crystal Dynamics are teaming up to launch Powerwash Simulator DLC themed around Tomb Raider and Lara Croft

FuturLab and Crystal Dynamics are teaming up to launch PowerWash Simulator DLC themed around Tomb Raider and Lara Croft. FuturLab marketing coordinator Jess Green announced the Tomb Raider Special Pack in a new PlayStation Blog post, but the DLC will be available for other platforms as well.

PowerWash Simulator’s Tomb Raider DLC will launch on Jan. 31, 2023, though FuturLab didn’t mention whether it’s a free pack or what the price will be.

The Tomb Raider pack takes you to Lara Croft’s mansion, which is sorely in need of a proper scrub, what with its mistress always being away from home.

Hose down the vast exterior and give its ancient bricks a new lease on life before turning your attention to Lara’s obstacle course for some more traditional Tomb Raider flavor.

Lara’s trove of finds is also in need of a wash, so plan on flooding a new museum-like area as well.

The Tomb Raider pack marks the first round of DLC for the quirky cleaner since it launched in 2022, following a lengthy early access period the year before. If that’s not enough PowerWash for you, check out the latest record-breaking no-soap speedrun from the recent Awesome Games Done Quick earlier in January.

Amazon is publishing the new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics

Amazon is publishing the new Tomb Raider from Crystal Dynamics, built on Unreal 5, on multiple platforms

The new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics is still in the works, and Amazon announced it will publish the action game on multiple platforms – whenever it releases. Amazon made the announcement in a press release, which Game Informer obtained, and said the new Tomb Raider pushes Lara Croft’s saga forward in exciting new ways and called it the most expansive Tomb Raider yet.

“It includes all the elements that have made Tomb Raider one of the most revered franchises in gaming, giving players control of the confident and multidimensional hero Lara Croft in an environment that rewards exploration and creative pathfinding, with mind-bending puzzles to solve, and a wide variety of enemies to face and overcome,” Amazon said in the press release.

Crystal Dynamics is building the new Tomb Raider using Unreal Engine 5, and Amazon Games will publish the game globally whenever it launches.

Scott Amos, head of Crystal Dynamics, said he believes Amazon is an ideal publishing partner.

“Transformative is what we’re looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities,” Amos said in the release. “They’re uniquely positioned to rewrite what publishing and development collaborations are, and we’re eager to forge this new path together, starting with building the biggest and best Tomb Raider game yet.”

Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the series’ most recent entry, released in 2019 to mostly positive reviews, with critics praising its interesting world, while pointing out the need for an equally-interesting story.

The new Tomb Raider is a bit of a departure for Amazon Games, which has, up until now, focused primarily on online games, such as New World, Lost Ark, and the upcoming Blue Protocol MMO from Bandai.

Crystal Dynamics files takedown notice following Tomb Raider script leak

Publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics issued the DMCA claim following a Tomb Raider script leak.

Earlier this week, potential details regarding the next Tomb Raider game began floating around online. More specifically, an audition script that allegedly contains story and character information.

Following the apparent leak, gaming-centric podcast Sacred Symbols read off bits from the script mentioned above in episode 213. This inevitably resulted in publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics issuing a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) claim via Patreon. For those of you not familiar with United States copyright law (most people), companies utilize DMCA takedowns as a means to combat piracy.

In a follow-up video, Colin Moriarty, a host of Sacred Symbols, spoke about the incident.

“They DMCA’d Patreon, to have them ask us to take down the offending audio of us talking about the new Tomb Raider,” Moriarty said via YouTube. “I was acting in the notion that this is fair use, this is general interest, this is of huge general interest. I didn’t break into Crystal Dynamics to steal it.”

Thus far, no other outlets have received DMCA claims from Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics. We won’t link to the script either for well, obvious reasons!

Thus far, we know next to nothing about this Tomb Raider title other than it’ll use Unreal Engine 5. Shortly after its announcement, Square Enix sold Crystal Dynamics, along with Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal, to Embracer Group. A move that upset fans considerably.

Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider movie rights are currently in flux.

MGM loses film rights to Tomb Raider, starting fierce bidding war in Hollywood

Alicia Vikander will no longer play Lara Croft in any big-screen adaptation.

The Tomb Raider film franchise seemingly needs a new home, and many prospects are lining up.

According to The Wrap, MGM has lost the movie rights to Tomb Raider after failing to begin production on another movie by May 2022. As such, several high-profile movie studios are bidding to acquire the franchise, though no deals have closed yet. For the time being, rights have returned to producer Graham King’s GK Films.

Insiders also claim that Alicia Vikander, who played protagonist Lara Croft in the 2018 movie, will not be returning to the series. Instead, any future Tomb Raider film will be a complete reboot. However, no director or casting information is available at this time.

Tomb Raider, the sort-lived franchise relaunch from 2018, made roughly $275 million at the global box office during its theatrical run. Surprisingly, that’s slightly better than the original Angelina Jolie film, which brought in $274 million worldwide back in the day.

Where the movies go from here is anybody’s guess. Several months ago, developer Crystal Dynamics announced that it is working on another Tomb Raider video game. Publisher Square Enix recently sold the series to Embracer Group as part of a $300 million deal, which left fans pretty upset.

Square Enix fans aren’t happy about the sale of Tomb Raider

Lara Croft and Adam Jensen will have a new home soon, and it’s not great.

There sure have been a lot of significant acquisitions within the games industry this year, and Embracer Group’s purchase of several Square Enix franchises is the latest.

For only $300 million, Embracer Group is acquiring Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, and more than 50 back-catalog games from Square Enix, along with most of its western studios. Right after announcing another Tomb Raider, no less.

Fans are (understandably) upset, mainly because Square Enix said in a press release that the transaction will primarily fund the company’s Blockchain ambitions. Great idea, that. Because if there’s one thing that Behaviour Interactive, GSC Game World, Ubisoft, and many other companies have taught us in the last year, it’s that everyone loves NFT and cryptocurrency stuff. No doubt about it, yup. Not an ounce of sarcasm in this paragraph, no siree Bob.

As you might expect, social media is overflowing with fans not happy that Square Enix ditched Tomb Raider, one of the most beloved video game series of all time, for NFT nonsense. Let’s look at the best reactions below, memes and all.

Tomb Raider writer wants fewer ‘father issues’ in next game

Rhianna Pratchett hopes Crystal Dynamics takes the story in bold new directions.

The excitement over Tomb Raider’s return is still palpable. Though former series writer Rhianna Pratchett hopes family history isn’t part of Lara Croft’s next adventure.

Pratchett, who wrote the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider, told Eurogamer that she’s not working on the new game. So like everyone else, she’s in the dark about any details aside from the fact that this installment will use Unreal Engine 5. However, Pratchett did express that she hopes Crystal Dynamics moves on from any storylines involving Lara Croft’s father.

“We had a really fun time evolving her character, so I would like to see probably less father issues,” Pratchett said. “And that’s coming from me!”

“I like seeing her striking out on her own and really taking some joy in what she does,” Pratchett continues. “Because when we wrote the reboot game, she was really on her way to becoming a tomb raider. So she was like proto-Tomb Raider. And all the traits that you associate with Tomb Raider, like tenaciousness, bravery, and resourcefulness, were kind of bubbling to the surface with her.”

It’s worth noting that Pratchett didn’t work on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the last mainline entry, which most people were lukewarm on.

“I want to see that full fruition. I want to see the sassy one-liners and things that I would have loved to have written. But, you know, she wasn’t at that stage yet. She didn’t have the confidence yet,” Pratchett concludes. “I think that the trilogy went down really well with fans, so it’s gonna be exciting to see what they do next.”

It’s hard to say where the next Tomb Raider will go with its story or if there’ll be any connection to the reboot trilogy.

Days Gone director joins Crystal Dynamics for the next Tomb Raider

Jeff Ross is now part of the team behind Lara Croft’s next adventure.

Jeff Ross, the director behind Day Gone, has joined Crystal Dynamics to work on the next Tomb Raider.

During State of Unreal 2022 on Tuesday, Crystal Dynamics made the surprising announcement that another Tomb Raider is in active development. Shortly after, Ross announced his involvement with the project.

“I’m excited to announce I now work at the amazing Crystal Dynamics as Design Director,” Ross said on Twitter. “That’s all I can say other than I’m thrilled with the project, and especially the team of really wonderful people.”

It’ll likely be a long time before we see whatever this new Tomb Raider is, as Crystal Dynamics probably only recently began working on the title after wrapping up development on Marvel’s Avengers — which isn’t exactly a fan-favorite Marvel game.

GLHF spoke with Ross last year about Days Gone and the sequel that never came to fruition. Sony Bend, the studio behind Days Gone, is working on another IP at this time, and it’s not looking like there’ll be a follow-up anytime soon, even though the open world zombie title sold pretty well.

Given the extra-long date to pick these titles up, it seems the Epic Games Store’s holiday week of freebies has come to an end.
