Knicks’ Tom Thibodeau blown away by Sixers’ Joel Embiid, James Harden

New York Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau is blown away by Philadelphia 76ers stars Joel Embiid and James Harden.

NEW YORK — The Philadelphia 76ers have impressive stars Joel Embiid and James Harden who terrorize opposing teams’ defenses. The pick-and-roll game with the two is absolutely deadly due to Harden’s playmaking and Embiid’s ruthless scoring.

Before the New York Knicks completed a 21-point rally to beat the Sixers on Sunday, coach Tom Thibodeau gushed over what the two stars can do on the offensive end of the floor. The two have found synergy while out on the floor.

“Yeah, no, it’s pretty good,” Thibodeau laughed about the Harden-Embiid duo. “When you take two guys like that, and the way they’re playing right now is unbelievable, and I think any time you put two elite players in the pick-and-roll, that’s gonna command a lot of attention, and then that opens up the floor for other guys. I think their willingness to sacrifice and play off each other has made them. They’re playing great basketball on both sides of the ball right now.”

Embiid is one of those bigs who can score in the paint or he can knock down mid-range jumpers off those passes from Harden. That type of offensive ability is tough for teams to stop . They make their teammates better due to the attention they receive.

“You look at Joel, he gives them a post presence,” Thibodeau continued. “He’s a big that can play away from the basket, he can put it on the floor, he’s terrific in the pick-and-roll, and James is terrific in the pick-and-roll, and then you look at guys like (Tyrese) Maxey and (Tobias) Harris and (De’Anthony) Melton, it’s a lot of weapons.”

One of the better aspects of the Harden-Embiid duo is the fact it’s clear they’re sacrificing for one another. Harden is no longer the ruthless scorer he was in his heyday, but he is an elite playmaker who makes everybody around him better. Embiid is rolling more than in the past with other ball-handlers.

“I think their willingness to play off each other, their ability to break you down off the dribble, that creates easy offense, and then of course, they’re very efficient from the 3, so they’ve surrounded them with good shooting,” Thibodeau finished. “(Georges) Niang comes in, spreads you out, and plays off, they got guys who are playing off their stars really well.”

Coaches around the league believe Sixers’ Tobias Harris is underrated

Coaches around the league believe that Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris is an underrated player.

NEW YORK–Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris remains one of the highest-paid players in the league, and he receives criticism for it, but he also remains one of the more productive players in the game.

He’s averaging 16.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 40.5% from deep and he continues to be a guy the Sixers can count on. Despite any role he’s given, Harris thrives in that situation.

He has gone from having to be the No. 2 scorer next to Joel Embiid to then having to be the No. 3 guy with the emergence of Tyrese Maxey and then he was bumped to No. 4 after the acquisition of James Harden. That could bother anybody, but Harris has accepted the change around him and he has excelled.

There are some coaches around the league who believe Harris is an underrated player as they have stated the following:

Evan Fournier on being out of Knicks’ rotation: ‘It’s not easy’

In two weeks, Evan Fournier has gone from a starter to a reserve to being out of the rotation completely. From a key piece for the Knicks to an insignificant, rarely used backup. “How hard is it? It’s not easy. I’ll tell you that,” the 30-year-old Fournier said after not playing a single second for the first time in the Knicks’ win over the Jazz on Tuesday night.

The biggest challenge for Fournier is staying ready. He plans to get more work in on game days than he would have otherwise and prepare like he did as a rookie with the Nuggets, when he appeared in just 38 games. “I mean, I’ve got to keep that mindset [this can change] for sure,” he said. “If I’m thinking about staying on the bench for the rest of the season it’s going to be awful. Mindset is always the same. Do your work every day and live [with] the result.” -via New York Post / November 17, 2022

“Just the rhythm of it, you’re learning your team,” Thibodeau said. “What works best? Are guys able to get in a rhythm? Those are the questions you ask. That’s why we did it.” It was somewhat surprising to see Grimes sit out the entire game, since he profiles as one of the Knicks’ best perimeter defenders and had such a strong summer. But he has missed so much time due to a sore left foot and only logged eight minutes each of the previous two games. Then there is the 30-year-old Fournier, who is making $18 million this year and set a Knicks record in 2021-22 for most 3-pointers in a single season. He has gone from an opening night starter to a reserve and now a bench-warmer. -via New York Post / November 16, 2022
The 30-year-old Frenchman makes $18 million this season with $18.9 million guaranteed for 2023-24. The 11-year veteran added that he hasn’t played so few minutes since “probably my second year” in the league with the Nuggets in 2013-14, when he averaged 19.8 minutes over 76 appearances (four starts). “I’m not gonna lie, I’m getting stiff on the bench now because I’m a little bit older. My knees can’t take it anymore,” Fournier said with a laugh. “But yeah, it’s not an excuse at all. I just have to figure it out myself, so I can help the team. That’s all I can say, really.” -via EuroHoops.net / November 15, 2022
“The thing is when you only shoot three times a game … it adds up. It adds up. And at the end of the season, you look at your [shooting] percentage and it’s not good,” Fournier said after not scoring in Sunday’s game. “But it’s just hard to find a rhythm right now. I think not knowing the rotation, what’s coming your way, etcetera, etcetera. I have to do a better job of all that and just being in the moment, being ready for whatever.” -via New York Post / November 14, 2022
Ian Begley: For those asking why Tom Thibodeau & Knicks see Quentin Grimes as a ‘situational’ player right now: “He’s missed a lot of time. So the conditioning part of that is part of that equation. As he gets opportunities, he’ll play more & more,” Thibodeau said when asked about it. -via Twitter @IanBegley / November 11, 2022

The 30-year-old Fournier had started in all 80 of his appearances with the Knicks last season, and the first seven games this year ahead of Friday’s benching. Former All-Star point guard Kemba Walker similarly was replaced in the starting unit with Alec Burks in late November of last season. “It is what it is. I’m in Year 11. So I know a lot of things can happen,” Fournier said after Friday’s win. “We see it every year. Last year with Kemba. So I’m going to do the best with what I have, try to impact winning and be a good teammate. That’s all you can ask for. Just do my best. Be a pro and take it from there…By doing your job. “Nothing really changes for the approach of the game. You have the same approach. You have to do the best with what’s given. That’s it.”

There is belief around the league Tom Thibodeau would prefer to give up RJ Barrett in a deal than shooting guard Quentin Grimes, who is coming off a solid rookie year, and a summer league in which he looked quicker and more sculpted. Grimes is a better defender and 3-point shooter than Barrett. Ainge is hot to acquire Grimes for his Jazz rebuilding plan. One individual believes Grimes would likely be amenable to joining Utah since a Brunson-Mitchell backcourt would a roadblock to ever becoming a Knicks starter.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve written or said or thought some variation of the following line countless times: the Knicks’ B-level offer is better than most of the other suitors’ A-level offers. But how true is that? Which of the Non-Knicks Six can come close to the package New York could cobble together? The Jazz want five or six or seven first-round picks, as well as young players. The Knicks own all of their firsts as well as four from other teams: the Wizards’ in 2023, the Detroit Pistons’ in ‘23, the Dallas Mavericks’ in ‘23 and the Milwaukee Bucks’ in ‘25. All of those are protected. They can deal up to eight first-rounders, including up to four unprotected ones. They could add at least three first-round swaps. They have attractive up-and-comers, including RJ Barrett (who we should assume would not be part of a hypothetical deal), Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin. -via The Athletic / August 9, 2022
There’s been some conflicting reports on the Utah Jazz and RJ Barrett amid the Knicks’ pursuit of Donovan Mitchell. While some reports state that the Jazz have had no in interest in Barrett, I don’t believe that is the case. Earlier this month – before reports emerged that Utah was willing to listen on Mitchell trade offers – the Jazz asked the Knicks about a package that included Mitchell Robinson, Barrett, other players, and at least three first-round picks. Around that time, members of the Jazz were also making educated guesses/projections on what an extension for Barrett may look like, per sources. -via SportsNet New York / July 29, 2022

The Lakers had conversations about joining the Jazz and Knicks a few weeks ago in a potential three-team trade, league sources told HoopsHype. The proposed three-team trade scenario included Russell Westbrook going to Utah and getting bought out. Utah would send Donovan Mitchell to the Knicks, a combination of two players, including Patrick Beverley and Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic or Malik Beasley to the Lakers, and the Jazz would receive significant draft pick compensation from the Knicks and Lakers. The Knicks also would’ve had to part with veteran salary filler(s), such as Derrick Rose to help make the salaries work. -via HoopsHype / August 5, 2022
