The definitive ranking of the 14 greatest American-born rock bands of all time

You will probably agree with our top choice, but what about the rest?

What is the greatest American-born rock band of all time? It sounds like an easy enough question, but my goodness, it is anything but that.

Podcast host Jack Wagner recently tweeted about the thought experiment, and the post caused ripples of debate in our Slack newsroom. So we decided to make a list.

This was a deliberately hard exercise for so many reasons, though, and it’s not just because most of the great bands you’re thinking about (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, AC/DC, Queen, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, U2, Oasis, Sex Pistols, Joy Division) are actually not bands from the United States. There were other hurdles we needed to jump through, too.

How exactly does one define greatness? Is it your personal favorite band, or is it based on accomplishments and influence? We all had our own definitions so we had to trust our gut here.

How does one define an American band? We disqualified Fleetwood Mac because Mick Fleetwood and the late Christine McVie are British; CSNY did not make the list because Neil Young is Canadian and Graham Nash is English; The Band didn’t count because several members (including the late, great Robbie Robertson) are Canadian; The Jimi Hendrix Experience had an American frontman but the rest of the band was English. You get the idea.

How do we define a rock and roll and roll band? Not only is it hard to define rock and roll (Do funk bands like Parliament count? What about R&B groups like Earth Wind & Fire?) but it is also tough to know what even counts as a band. So many of the greatest musicians who immediately came to mind (e.g. Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Prince, Joan Jett, Patti Smith) were primarily known as solo artists. This was tough to evaluate but our writers tended to favor bands with a more traditional rock and roll instrumentation.

Here was our methodology: Our staff was allowed to vote for any domestic rock band. They were asked to rank each band from No. 1 overall to No. 10 overall. Bands that got first-place votes received ten points while bands that got tenth-place votes earned one.

We calculated the results and bring them to you, the reader. This article says the results are definitive, and it is definitively our list. But really, it is actually imperfect, and mostly, this was simply the closest we could get to agreeing.

Other bands that received votes from multiple staffers include Journey, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hall and Oates, The Grateful Dead, Simon & Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Strokes.

Lane Kiffin played some Tom Petty to troll Florida after a top QB prospect jumped to Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin couldn’t not troll Florida after Ole Miss flipped one of their top commits.

Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin is having a heck of a weekend.

Kiffin’s team got a commitment from four-star quarterback Austin Simmons on Saturday, a hyper-intelligent prospect who finished high school as a freshman with a 5.34 GPA.

What made the recruitment even sweeter for Ole Miss was that Simmons jumped over to Oxford from Florida, where he had committed earlier in the year.

To celebrate Simmons’ commitment and troll his SEC rival, Kiffin tweeted that he was blasting some Tom Petty music on Spotify.

The joke comes from the fact that Petty was a Gainesville native, which is where the Gators call home. Ouch.

Kiffin’s new quarterback clearly enjoyed his new coach’s social media gag.

Kiffin also shared a photo of him dressed in Ole Miss apparel and holding a small gator in his hand because how could he not?

It’s going to be an exciting future for Ole Miss with Simmons in the fold, and Kiffin didn’t waste any time continuing his hot streak as the SEC’s best Twitter jokester.

Tom Petty to be given posthumous Doctor of Music degree from Florida

Tom Petty is getting a degree from UF!

One of the most famous names synonymous with the University of Florida is the late rock star Tom Petty, who hailed from Hogtown originally before hitting it big out west.

While the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member never attended the hallowed halls of the Orange and Blue, his influence remains omnipresent with the recent tradition of singing his signature tune, “Won’t Back Down” during its football games. As such, the Petty family and the school have some tight connections.

“I don’t think anyone in our family, including him, thought that he would be linked with the University of Florida this way,” Bruce Petty told Rolling Stone. “It’s such a powerful thing, it was his life-long dream, and I know he would just be over-the-top, crazy happy about it.”

And despite never matriculating on campus, Petty still holds a special place in the heart of the university’s school of music.

“We in the UF School of Music and College of the Arts are privileged to honor Tom Petty with an honorary doctorate degree in Music, celebrating not only his extraordinary achievements as an artist, but the ways in which his music has and continues to unite us as a community,” University of Florida School of Music director Kevin Orr said.

Orr added, “Tom Petty’s tireless defense of the rights of performing artists, and his compassionate advocacy for the wellbeing of his neighbors in every community where he lived, are embodied by the students and faculty of the UF School of Music: commitment to one’s artistic passions, even in the face of challenges; the safeguarding of creative work to ensure unique and lasting impact; and indeed, the power of music to advance causes for the greater good in society.”

Spanning across a three-decades-plus music career, Petty earned multiple Grammy awards, MTV Music Awards, the Billboard Century Award, Radio Music Awards “Legend” Award, and other top industry honors ultimately earning an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Gainesville native is also widely recognized for his philanthropy in both Los Angeles and his hometown, as well as his commitment to environmental advocacy. Petty’s accolades include the Midnight Mission’s Golden Heart Award in 2011 and MusicCares “Person of the Year” at the 2017 Grammy Awards — two of the highest honors in philanthropy.

The university is also partnering with Petty’s estate on what they are calling the Tom Petty Endowment for Guitars & Innovation, benefitting its School of Music’s Guitar and new Music Business & Entrepreneurship programs. Petty’s estate donated $100,000 to the new endowment. The family is also raising money for the endowment by selling reprints of Shepard Fairey’s An American Treasure poster.

The Cade Museum, located in Petty’s hometown of Gainesville, Florida, celebrated Petty’s doctorate by screening the 2021 documentary Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free on Thursday, with UF School of Music students presenting songs from Petty’s Wildflowers album arranged for a string quartet.

The Cade will also open a Wildflowers exhibit later this year in association with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Florida Gator fans sang “I Won’t Back Down” loud on Tom Petty Day

It was Tom Petty Day in Gainesville, Fl, and the moment everyone was waiting for came at the end of the third quarter.

The Gator Nation got together to celebrate Tom Petty by singing “I Won’t Back Down.”

They did it loud and proud.

There was merchandise available to celebrate the late rocker and his connection to the place he grew up.

The proceeds went to charities and can be purchased here.

The Gators were trailing LSU entering the fourth quarter.

On the first play, quarterback Anthony Richardson showed he had no intention of backing down by running 81 yards for a Florida touchdown.

Unfortunately, ESPN maimed the tradition on Saturday by being in a commercial and only showing a piece of the crowd in full throat on the iconic song.

This is last year’s version until someone posts what happened at Ben Griffin Stadium on Tom Petty Day, 2022.

Tom Petty Day’s schedule of events ahead of the LSU game

The Florida Gators will celebrate the Gainesville native with “Tom Petty Day” on Saturday, October 15. The celebration will begin on Friday.

On Oct. 7, 2017, the Florida Gators lost a close matchup against LSU 17-16. While the game didn’t cause celebration, the Tom Petty tribute between the third and fourth quarters did. In remembrance of Petty, The Swamp sang “Won’t Back Down” after “We Are The Boys” in a tribute to Gainesville’s finest. What originated as a one-time thing, instantly turned into Florida’s newest tradition.

Saturday, the University of Florida Athletic Association will celebrate the first-ever “Tom Petty Day” to honor Petty’s contributions to the City of Gainesville and the University of Florida. Petty once worked as a groundkeeper for the University of Florida before he made it big in the music industry.

The university has also announced that it will award Petty an honorary posthumous Doctor of Music in May 2023.

Florida Collection has partnered with The Tom Petty Estate to create apparel licensed by Original Retro Brand and other gear available for purchase online at the Gator Sportshop and the UF Bookstore. They are also available at TomPetty.com.
