‘Physical makeup of the team’: Kansas sports reporter on why Leipold’s Jayhawks are different

To get ready for the Oklahoma Sooners matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks we talked with The Topeka Capital-Journal sports reporter @JordanGuskey.

A decade and a half ago, Mark Mangino and Todd Reesing helped elevate the [autotag]Kansas Jayhawks[/autotag] to the national conversation. They became Big 12 title contenders behind an offense that was able to keep pace with just about everyone.

But that was a long time ago. In the aftermath, Kansas became one of the worst programs in the country, cycling through Turner Gill, Charlie Weis, David Beaty, and Les Miles. They couldn’t replicate the success of the Mangino-Weiss era, failing to reach bowl eligibility for 13 consecutive seasons.

Then the Miles era abruptly ended and the Jayhawks went all the way up to Buffalo to bring Lance Leipold to the Power Five and to a program in desperate need of resuscitation. Coming in late in the spring, Leipold didn’t have much of a chance to find success that first year, but they were a team that was far more competitive than they had been in a long time despite the two-win season. One of those two wins came on the road against Texas.

Then last year, the Jayhawks started strong, earning their first bowl bid since 2008, and in 2023, they are 5-2 and on the verge of reaching a bowl game for the second straight season.

And while they head into their matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners as a double-digit home underdog, there’s a sense this Jayhawks team could cause some problems for the Sooners.

To get ready for the 114th meeting between the Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas Jayhawks, Sooners Wire had the pleasure of discussing the matchup with Jordan Guskey, a Sports Reporter covering the Kansas Jayhawks for The Topeka Capital-Journal.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger closing in on some Big 12 history

Texas Longhorns senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger is closing in on some Big 12 history. He is currently top 10 in three major categories.

This season Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger became only the second quarterback in school history to pass for 10,000 yards. The other being Colt McCoy, a player that Sam has been chasing his entire time in Austin. Against the West Virginia Mountaineers, Ehlinger passed Oklahoma‘s Sam Bradford for 9th all-time in Big 12 history. He is now tied with Todd Reesing (Kansas) with 90 career passing touchdowns.

Ehlinger could creep even higher on the touchdown passes list as he is just two behind Mason Rudolph, three behind Patrick Mahomes and five behind Kliff Kingsbury. Should Ehlinger throw six more touchdowns he will find himself at No. 6 on the list.

No. 1 Graham Harrell Texas Tech 2005-08 134
No. 2 Baker Mayfield TTU-Oklahoma 2013-17 131
No. 3 Landry Jones Oklahoma 2009-12 123
No. 4 Colt McCoy Texas 2006-09 112
No. 5 Chase Daniel Missouri 2005-08 101
No. 6 Kliff Kingsbury Texas Tech 1999-2002 95
No. 7 Patrick Mahomes Texas Tech 2014-16 93
No. 8 Mason Rudolph Oklahoma State 2014-17 92
No. 9 Sam Ehlinger Texas 2017- 90
No. 9 Todd Reesing Kansas 2006-09 90

Climbing to the No. 5 spot is realistically the highest that Ehlinger could get to. Unless he went absolutely bananas and throws for 23 touchdowns in the next four plus games. Texas could have five games remaining if they make it to the Big 12 Championship, otherwise he would have four games to reach the mark. The touchdown passing list isn’t the only one that he is climbing on.

No. 1 Landry Jones Oklahoma 2009-12 16,646
No. 2 Graham Harrell Texas Tech 2005-08 15,793
No. 3 Baker Mayfield TTU-Oklahoma 2013-17 14,607
No. 4 Mason Rudolph Oklahoma State 2014-17 13,618
No. 5 Colt McCoy Texas 2006-09 13,253
No. 6 Chase Daniel Missouri 2005-08 12,515
No. 7 Kliff Kingsbury Texas Tech 1999-2002 12,429
No. 8 Patrick Mahomes Texas Tech 2014-16 11,252
No. 9 Todd Reesing Kansas 2006-09 11,194
No. 10 Trevone Boykin Texas Christian 2012-15 10,727
No. 11 Sam Ehlinger Texas 2017- 10,704

While already in the top 10 in passing touchdown, Ehlinger is closing in on the top 10 in passing yards as well. He needs just 24 yards to pass Boykin for 10th all-time. With just 490 yards, he will pass Todd Reesing for that No. 9 spot. Much like with the touchdown throws, without a massive output over the remainder of the season the No. 8 spot might be as high as he can climb. Ehlinger needs 548 yards to pass Mahomes.

Other notable rankings in the Big 12

Total yards (12,553) – No. 10

TDs responsible for (122)- No. 5

As far as total yards are concerned, Ehlinger can realistically get to No. 7 which is where Brad Smith (12,837) of Missouri currently sits. Ehlinger is just 10 touchdowns away from the Texas school record and the No. 3 spot in Big 12 history.

Quarterback Sam Ehlinger is definitely one of the top 10 quarterbacks in Big 12 history, statistically speaking.
