Cristiano Ronaldo looking at Manchester United exit

If you’re in the Champions League, Man Utd might have a player for you

Multiple reports say that Cristiano Ronaldo has informed Manchester United that if the right bid comes in for him, they should accept it.

The Times is reporting that Ronaldo, 37, wants to ensure that the final seasons of his career are spent playing in the Champions League, while The Athletic says new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already had a meeting with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss a possible transfer, and that Napoli is interested in bringing him back to Serie A.

That report also says that Bayern Munich have been told that Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer is looking for an exit.

Man Utd do have a place in Europe, as they qualified for the Europa League, but despite a lengthy career, Ronaldo has never played in UEFA’s second-tier tournament, and based on today’s news does not seem to want to start this coming year.

The Red Devils finished sixth this past season, missing the Champions League places by 13 points. Ronaldo returned to the club after spending the previous 12 seasons with Real Madrid and Juventus, but though he scored 24 goals in all competitions, the reunion has not been particularly fruitful, as Manchester City and Liverpool have moved out as a class by themselves in terms of contending for silverware.

The club is in the midst of a major change, with Erik ten Hag being hired as their new manager and transfer rumors pointing to some significant changes to the roster. Ten Hag has said he wants to keep Ronaldo at the club, even as there have been criticisms of how a perceived lack of defensive contribution has meant his goalscoring record comes with a cost.

Chelsea names Todd Boehly chairman of the board

The changes at Chelsea continue

Chelsea has named new club owner Todd Boehly as the new chairman of the club’s board, effective immediately.

In May, Boehly lead a consortium to purchase Chelsea after Roman Abramovich sold the club under pressure from sanctions from the British government stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The changes to Chelsea’s board are taking place after that sale was officially completed, allowing the American businessman to lead a new era.

“As custodians of Chelsea FC, we now begin executing our long-term vision and plan for the club, creating an outstanding experience for its passionate, loyal fans, and continuing to challenge for top honors in line with Chelsea FC’s decorated history,” said Boehly in an official club statement. “Working together, side-by-side, we are firmly committed to winning, both on and off the pitch. For us, that effort has begun.”

Chelsea’s announcement also confirmed the departure of club director Marina Granovskaia. Boehly will act as an interim sporting director for Chelsea while they pursue a permanent hire in the role, putting him front and center on the soccer side of the business as they enter the ever-important summer transfer window.

The new Chelsea board is largely comprised of members of the Boehly consortium, with his Clearlake Capital partners Behdad Eghbali, José E. Feliciano, and James Pade all listed as board members, along with Boehly’s fellow Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers owner Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss.

Chelsea sale complete as Todd Boehly consortium officially takes over in £4.25bn deal

It’s officially 100% official and done.

Chelsea’s sale to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly is officially complete.

The group takes over from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who led Chelsea to a prolonged period of success after buying the club in 2003.

Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale in March under heavy pressure after he was sanctioned by the UK government in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In addition to Boehly, the consortium also includes his fellow Dodgers and Lakers co-owner Mark Walter, Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss and Clearlake Capital, a California private equity firm.

“Roman Abramovich has completed the sale of Chelsea Football Club and related companies to an investment group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.,” Chelsea said in a statement on Monday.

On Saturday Abramovich released a farewell statement on Chelsea’s website, saying: “I am pleased this search has now come to a successful conclusion. As I hand over Chelsea to its new custodians, I would like to wish them the best of success, both on and off the pitch.

“It has been an honour of a lifetime to be a part of this club – I would like to thank all the Club’s past and current players, staff, and of course fans for these incredible years.”

Chelsea’s statement said that over 250 enquiries into the club had resulted in 12 credible bids, with the Boehly bid coming through several rounds of scrutiny. “We believe the Board and the Boehly/Clearlake group have a shared vision for the future of Chelsea Football Club,” read the club statement.

In a statement posted on Chelsea’s team site, Boehly said “We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club. We’re all in – 100% — every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud.”

Report: Magic Johnson joining group bidding to buy Broncos

Magic Johnson has joined a Josh Harris-led group that’s bidding to buy the Broncos.

The list of millionaires (and billionaires) interested in buying the Denver Broncos is growing.

Five-time NBA champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson is joining a group led by Josh Harris that’s bidding to buy the Broncos, according to a report from Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico.com. Harris is a co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Johnson is already a co-owner of MLB, MLS and WNBA teams. Interestingly, Johnson is part of the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership group with Todd Boehly, who is also leading a group bidding for Denver’s NFL franchise.

The fact that Johnson’s not joining Boehly’s group is presumably a sign that the ex-NBA star believes the Harris group has a better chance of winning the bid. That might be because Boehly is considered the favorite to buy English soccer club Chelsea. If Boehly’s bid for Chelesea is successful, it might be difficult to also pay a record-breaking price for the Broncos.

All of this would be a moot point, of course, if Walmart heir Rob Walton submits a bid for Denver that no other group could come close to matching. Given his net worth of about $70 billion, Walton is considered the favorite to buy the Broncos.

Five groups — including Walton, Boehly and Harris/Johnson — have advanced to the next stage of bidding for the team. The Broncos are hoping to complete a sale before the start of the 2022 season.

76ers owner in bid for NFL’s Denver Broncos

A group led by 76ers and Devils co-owner Josh Harris and a group led by Los Angeles Dodgers investor Todd Boehly have also submitted initial offers for the Denver Broncos, said the person, who was granted anonymity because the process is private. All will have in-person meetings with Broncos leadership at the beginning of May.

Todd Boehly a potential candidate to bid for Denver Broncos

Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Lakers and Dodgers, is said to be interested in bidding for the Broncos.

Todd Boehly is “interested in a possible bid” for the Denver Broncos, according to a report from the New York Post‘s Josh Kosman.

Boehly, 46, is the co-founder, chairman and CEO Eldridge Industries. He holds degrees from the College of William & Mary and the London School of Economics. Estimates of Boehly’s net worth vary, but he is believed to be worth about $5 billion.

The Broncos are expected to be sold for $4 billion or more, and they have drawn interest from multiple billionaires.

Boehly is already heavily invested in sports. He is a part-owner of teams including the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB) and Los Angeles Lakers (NBA). He is also part-owner of DraftKings, an official daily fantasy sports partner of the NFL.

In addition to baseball, basketball and football, Boehly has also attempted to enter the soccer world. In 2019, he tried to buy English Premier League soccer team Chelsea F.C., and he might try again.

Chelsea’s current owner is Russian billionaire oligarch Roman Abramovich, who has had his assets frozen by the British government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Before those sanctions, Abramovich was attempting to sell the soccer team. If Chelsea is sold, Boehly would presumably have interest once again.

Boehly grew up in Maryland and he now lives in Connecticut.
