Mike Farrell reveals Top 10 coaching candidates for Nebraska

Who does the “godfather of recruiting” think should be on the sidelines for Nebraska next season?

The Nebraska coaching search is now closing in on the two-month mark since the firing of Scott Frost on September 11th. Questions remain on who athletic director Trev Alberts will hire to take over the program starting in 2023. Shortly after firing former coach Scott Frost, the athletic director said the following about the search for a new head coach,

“I will tell you a little bit about the process going forward and we’ll open it up to questions. Obviously, we’re going to do a national search. We’re going to engage some third-party help, mostly for logistics and other things. I want you to know as well and I would encourage our fans and everyone to recognize there will be a lot of rumors out there. There’s going to be a lot of innuendo. I want you to know that these sorts of decisions and processes are not made in a silo. I have a lot of great mentors and friends that we’ll be working with.”

“Ultimately, you know, in a prior life, I have relationships with a lot of coaches in this business, and I intend to reach out to a lot of people. So if you hear that Trev Alberts reached out to XYZ coach, it doesn’t mean that I’ve offered the job to XYZ coach. I think there’s some fabulous coaches out there that have a perspective about our job that I can benefit from so I’m going to reach out to a lot of people.”

The “Godfather of Recruiting” Mike Farrell has recently made his thoughts on the search known by listing the “10 Best Coaching Fits for Nebraska.” You can find that list of candidates below.

How to watch Panthers vs. Falcons: Time, TV and streaming options for Week 10

Here’s how to watch and what to watch for in the Panthers’ lone primetime appearance (at least for now) here in 2022.

Just 11 days ago, the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons gave us one of the craziest games of the 2022 season. So, can they do it again?

Here’s how you can find out . . .

Week 10

When to watch

Thursday, Nov. 10, 8:15 p.m. ET

How to watch/stream

The game will be broadcast on Amazon Prime, with Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung on the call.

How to listen

WRFX 99.7 The FOX is the team’s local radio station. Anish Shroff, Jake Delhomme, Luke Kuechly, Kristen Balboni and Jim Szoke will have the coverage.

History

With their Week 8 loss, the Panthers are now 20-35 all-time against the Falcons. Atlanta has won 11 of the past 15 meetings with Carolina.

What to watch for

Panthers starting quarterback PJ Walker notched a career-high 317 passing yards in that last matchup against the Falcons. But with Baker Mayfield coming on strong in relief this past Sunday and Sam Darnold returning to the active roster, Walker’s time under center could be growing thin.

Will he, running back D’Onta Foreman and wide receiver DJ Moore put in more work on the birds to restart the offense and jump back into this absurd NFC South race?

Calgary Flames at Boston Bruins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Calgary Flames at Boston Bruins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Calgary Flames (5-5-2) and Boston Bruins (11-2-0) meet Thursday at TD Garden in Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Flames vs. Bruins odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Flames dropped another gut-wrenching 1-goal game Tuesday at the New Jersey Devils, falling 3-2 in regulation. The previous two losses were also 1-goal games — both in overtime — and 5 of the team’s 6 losses during its current skid were by 1 goal.

The Bruins rebounded from a 2-1 road loss at the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday with a solid 3-1 win over the visiting St. Louis Blues Monday. It was the 7th win in as many games at TD Garden for the B’s, who have outscored their competition 28-13 on home ice.

Flames at Bruins projected goalies

Jacob Markstrom (4-3-2, 2.97 GAA, .893 SV%) vs. Linus Ullmark (9-1-0, 2.05 GAA, .932 SV%, 1 SO)

Markstrom hasn’t been terribly sharp this season, especially in November. He is winless in his five 5 outings while going 0-2-2 with a 3.46 GAA and .881 SV% across 4 November assignments.

Ullmark has looked like an All-Star in the first full month of the regular season, winning all but one of his 10 starts to date. He has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 8 of his 11 appearances.

Flames at Bruins picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Flames 2

Moneyline

The BRUINS (-175) are actually a bargain at this price.

Boston is a perfect 7-for-7 at home this season and has managed a perfect 5-0-0 record against Western Conference teams to date.

The Flames have dropped 6 in a row, including each of the first 2 games on their current 4-game road trip. Calgary is a very ordinary 2-2-2 in 6 games against Eastern Conference foes.

Puck line/Against the spread

The BRUINS -1.5 (+140) are worth playing as a half-unit wager on the puck line.

In Boston’s 6 victories to date as a favorite, it’s covered the puck line in 5 of them.

The Flames +1.5 (-180) have lost 5 of the past 6 games during their skid by just 1 goal, but that’s an awfully large price to pay for a little bit of insurance. Calgary is not playing well and it cannot be trusted.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-125) is worth a play.

The Under has split 3-3 in Calgary’s 6 games against Eastern Conference foes, including 1-1 in 2 road games on its current trip.

The Over has dominated most of the season for Boston, going 7-3-1 in the first 11 games, but the Under is 2-0 in the past 2 outings, with the B’s yielding just 1.5 goals per contest.

Penn State vs. Loyola: Stream, broadcast info, Big Ten schedule

Penn State looks to go 2-0 when they host Loyola on Thursday night. How to watch…

Jalen Pickett and the Penn State Nittany Lions are going for a 2-0 start to the season on Thursday night when they host the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds in non-conference action in the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State started its season with a solid victory on Monday night against Winthrop and Loyolya dropped its first game of the season with a road loss at DePaul.

Loyola’s Kenny Jones led the Greyhounds with 20 points in the loss on Monday night, and he should be the main cog for the team against Penn State’s defense. Penn State’s defense played well against a well-coached Winthrop squad on Monday night, which pleased head coach Micah Shrewsberry. But that was just one game, and Shrewsberry knows his team still has more to prove.

This will be a good opportunity to keep things going before a big game next week against Butler. Here is how to catch Thursday night’s game as well as the rest of the Big Ten schedule for the night.

On this day: Dave Cowens leave of absence begins; Kendrick Perkins, Gene Conley born; Chuck Connors passes

On this day in Celtics history, Dave Cowens stepped away from the team for a time, Kendrick Perkins and Gene Conely were born, and Chuck Connors left us.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Hall of Fame big man Dave Cowens took a leave of absence from the team after several days of trying to get permission from team owner Irv Levin and legendary Celtics general manager Red Auerbach.

Cowens never revealed what caused him to want the break — it came after a four-game losing streak in a season that saw friend Paul Silas traded away while Cowens was embroiled in a lawsuit, any of which or all could have been the culprit. “Dave came into my office today, and said he’s got a lot of personal problems and feels he can’t play,” said Auerbach via the AP’s Dave O’Hara.

“These things happen,” added Red. “He’s a fantastic human being and sincere. This is a shock to everyone, no one anticipated it. I ache.”

Warriors’ Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) could return Friday vs. Cavaliers

The Warriors could be getting a piece back in the second unit before hosting the Cavaliers on Friday.

After returning from their five-game road swing, the Golden State Warriors returned to Chase Center to host the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. Despite securing a much-needed win to snap their five-game losing streak, the Warriors were still missing a piece off the bench against the Kings.

Due to a hamstring injury, Donte DiVincenzo missed his eighth consecutive game. With the Warriors getting three days off before hosting the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, DiVincenzo could be nearing a return to the court.

On Wednesday, DiVincenzo practiced and scrimmaged with the Warriors. DiVincenzo also practiced on Sunday before Golden State’s game on Monday against the Kings. If DiVincenzo is cleared by the medical staff, he will return to the lineup on Friday against the Cavs, according to Steve Kerr.

Via @CjHolmes22 on Twitter:

If DiVincenzo is cleared to return, he will provide a spark to a bench unit that has struggled to produce and find a rhythm since his injury on Oct. 23 in the third game of the season.

During his first three games with the Warriors, DiVincenzo averaged five points on 45.5% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc, with an assist in 14 minutes per game.

Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers odds and lines, with expert NFL picks, predictions and best bets.

The Atlanta Falcons (4-5) visit the Carolina Panthers (2-7) for an 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff in the Week 10 Thursday Night Football game (Prime Video). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Falcons vs. Panthers odds, and make our expert NFL picks and predictions.

The Falcons won a wild 37-34 win in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Panthers in Week 8, but failed to cover as 4.5-point favorites. It was unable to carry over the momentum, losing 20-17 at home to the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend.

Carolina QB PJ Walker hit WR D.J. Moore on a Hail Mary to tie the Falcons 34-34, pending the point after. But Moore took off his helmet in celebration, the Panthers were flagged 15 yards and PK Eddy Pineiro  missed the PAT sending the game to OT. Pineiro also missed a game-winning field goal in OT, but the Falcons didn’t.

Falcons at Panthers picks and predictions

Prediction

Falcons 19, Panthers 13

Moneyline

FALCONS (-140) is not a terrible play as moderate favorites, especially since the Panthers (+117) limp in with injuries at some key areas.

Even if the likes of Burns, Jackson and/or Luvu are able to push through injuries to play on defense, Atlanta is still the play.

Against the spread

Play FALCONS -2.5 (-120) is a little on the risky side, simply because the Panthers +2.5 (+100) easily could have won in Atlanta in Week 8.

In addition, RB D’Onta Foreman went over 100 yards with 3 TDs against the Falcons, so that will be an area of focus for the Atlanta defense. It must do better. Carolina has had questions at quarterback all season, and it looked to have temporarily answered those questions with Walker’s solid showing in Atlanta. However, he was brutal in a loss in Cincinnati last week, and Baker Mayfield came on. A quarterback turnstile is not good for consistency, and Atlanta’s situation is much more stable.

Over/Under

UNDER 42.5 (-105) is the play here, and might be the best on the board.

Atlanta and Carolina combined for 71 total points in Week 8, and that’s unlikely to occur outdoors, especially with the potential early effects of Tropical Storm Nicole affecting the entire Southeastern United States.

The forecast for the greater Charlotte area calls for a 100 percent chance of rain for Thursday night, with winds gusting 10-20 mph. That will keep the offenses mostly ground-based, and running runs the clock, which Under bettors love.

Georgia Southern at Louisiana odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Georgia Southern at Louisiana odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Georgia Southern Eagles (5-4, 2-3 Sun Belt) visit the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (4-5, 2-4) for a Thursday night conference battle in Lafayette. Kickoff at Cajun Field is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Georgia Southern vs. Louisiana odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Georgia Southern has played in 3 consecutive 1-score games. The most recent of those was a 38-31 loss to South Alabama Saturday. The setback for the Eagles — a 3.5-point underdog — came after a bye week and wins of 28-23 over Old Dominion and 45-38 over James Madison. The Sun Belt’s top offense (480.2 total yards per game) was held to a season-low 366 yards in the loss to South Alabama.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are also coming off a 1-score setback. Louisiana was undone by 3.5-point favorite Troy 23-17 Saturday. UL coughed up a 17-point lead in losing its 2nd straight game.

Georgia Southern at Louisiana picks and predictions

Prediction

Georgia Southern 38, Louisiana 34

Moneyline

Respecting the close-game angle to this contest and the spread in general. Going to PASS here, but will double back to see if a Georgia Southern +155 becomes available. The Eagles passing advantage makes them a solid side, just not 1 with leverage at current pricing.

Against the spread

AVOID. See above.

Over/Under

Louisiana likes to run the ball. Analytics call Georgia Southern’s defense against the run into question perhaps even more than its 224.6 yards per game allowed (127th FBS). And the Eagles allow a few too many big plays against the run.

Likewise, UL allows too many explosive plays through the air. Enter the Eagles passing game, which cranks out 331.4 yards per contest (4th).

On offense, the Eagles have been quite good in the red zone; the Cajuns have been solid overall and improving in that area in recent weeks. Louisiana’s red-zone defense has left much to be desired.

On a good-weather night in central Louisiana, expect some back-and-forth upward spiral in a scoring exchange.

BACK THE OVER 61.5 (-110).
