Hot Take Cannon: The Timberwolves surge is very real, the Suns are very good and more from around the NBA

Don’t sleep on the Timberwolves

What’s up, family! FTW’s NBA Hot Take Cannon is back with more goodies for you to snack on.

We’re about one fourth of the way into the season so far with teams starting to either hit or creep closer to that 20 game mark. The small sample size theater that we had to start the season is morphing into the league’s new reality.

So you know what that means — there’s plenty to discuss today. We’re going to get in on the Lakers and Clippers, the Suns being awesome and more.

But before we do that, let’s talk a little bit about the Timberwolves.

Anthony Edwards’ NSFW description of Giannis Antetokounmpo was so hilarious but completely accurate

Couldn’t have said it any better.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is absolutely unguardable.

Sure, it’s not in the way that you’d typically think of a player being unguardable. He’s not, say, drilling 3-pointers in your face like Steph Curry. He’s not crossing you into next week like Kyrie Irving or James Harden.

He’s just physically dominating you like some sort of twisted combination of Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James that just feels like it shouldn’t be possible. And, honestly, defending that might be a bit worse than watching someone hit a stepback 3-pointer on you.

You know there’s absolutely nothing you can do. Here’s a look at what that looked like via his shot chart from Wednesday against the Timberwolves.

He absolutely dominated the paint.

Now here’s what it feels like, via a perfect NSFW description from Anthony Edwards.

WARNING: There is A LOT of NSFW language in this tweet.

“With a guy like that, you can’t stress about him scoring. That’s what he’s gonna do. M*********** is 7’2, 280 pounds, like there ain’t nothing you can do about it. Like s***, we put four people on him, m************ still scored the ball…I ain’t never seen nothing like it. You can put four people on him, he might miss it, jump right back up and dunk that b****. I mean, like, it’s nothing you can do about it…I can’t even say we contained him. He still went for 40.”

It’s the last line that really drives it home, though.

“There’s nothing I can say about Giannis, man. He’s unstoppable.”

And that’s what it sounds like to guard Giannis Antetokounmpo.

7 totally hilarious and extremely fun early-season NBA stats that will blow your mind

These numbers are insane.

Look, the NBA season is only a week old. Paying attention to any stats or looking for trends at this point is a fool’s errand.

So y’all can just call me a fool then. I truly couldn’t help myself.

I logged on to NBA.com’s stats to see which teams were doing what and, holy cow, are there some absolutely nonsensical things going on in the NBA right now.

The Grizzlies look incredible and awful at the same time. The Knicks are chucking ridiculous amounts of 3’s. The Thunder are Thundering at astronomical Thunder levels. Oh, and the Magic are Thundering, too. Harder than anyone has ever Thundered before — well, except the Thunder.

Anyway, there’s a lot happening right now that doesn’t matter and doesn’t make any sense. But thanks to NBA.com’s stats as well as StatMuse’s research tool, we recorded them all here for you.

Enjoy.

Karl-Anthony Towns might have the most bizarre pregame ritual in NBA history

Karl-Anthony Towns’ pregame ritual is one of the weirdest in NBA history. It absolutely has to be.

Athletes are very superstitious folks. And those superstitions can lead them to doing some very weird things to prepare themselves for their games.

But there’s probably not much that’s going to be Karl-Anthony Towns’ pregame ritual at this point. It’s so incredibly bizarre.

You’re probably thinking “yo, he probably eats some weird food to get ready.” Or maybe you’re thinking “What? Does he listen to weird music?” Nope. It’s actually none of the above. It’s even weirder.

Apparently, Towns likes to watch two gorillas fight each other to the death ahead of games, according to Timberwolves reporter Dane Moore.

He’s not out here listening to a motivational song or getting some motivational quotes or something. No. None of that. That’s too normal. This man watches two gorillas. Fight. To the death. Bruh.

This quote is absolutely wild.

This quote almost doesn’t seem real. It feels like that time we thought Kawhi Leonard was out here stanning apples.

NBA Twitter was just lost. There were so many questions.

Anthony Edwards said the Timberwolves ‘gladly’ let RJ Barrett take the Knicks’ last shot

Ouch.

Anthony Edwards is an extremely good and fun interview.

He’s never afraid to say whatever is on his mind and, because of that, there are a lot of genuinely funny moments and informational nuggets that come out when he speaks. But some things? They should probably just stay in the huddle.

Like this moment from Wednesday night’s game when Edwards said after the game that the Timberwolves would “gladly” let RJ Barrett take the last shot for the Knicks.

Ouch.

On the last possession of the Wolves 102-101 win over the Knicks, RJ Barrett got the ball with a chance to win it and he took a tough step-back jumper that completely missed.

This is exactly what the Wolves wanted, according to Edwards.

“Try not to let [Julius] Randle catch the ball. Gladly, RJ Barrett caught it and if he would have made the shot we would have lived with it because that’s who we want taking the shot. We don’t want anyone else taking it.”

SHEEEEESH. Probably weren’t supposed to say that one out loud, rook. But hey! At least he’s being honest. And we love honesty in our athletes.

Statistically, that strategy is sound. Barrett is obviously not the greatest shooter. He’s improving, but on the season he’s shooting 36% from 10-16 feet out, according to Basketball-Reference. That’s not good.

So great defensive strategy there from the Wolves. As much as that might sting for Knicks fans to hear, it’s true.

Watch this incredible footage captured from a drone flying through a bowling alley

This is so incredible. Wow.

First of all, I’m almost certain that headline sounds wild. A drone? Flying through a bowling alley? What?

There are so many questions that come with that. Why would a drone be flying through a bowling alley? What is this for? And, really, why are the details of a bowling alley even remotely interesting enough for a drone to fly through?

And, honestly, I don’t have the complete answers to these questions for you because I am still at a loss for how incredible this video is. It’s just spectacular. It’s legitimately top-notch cinema.

The only way to properly understand it is to actually see it, so take a look.

Prediction

Timberwolves 122, Bulls 113

Moneyline (ML)

The Timberwolves (-162) are favored to take down the Bulls (+135), but this is a little higher than I’d like to risk. Usually my limit is -170 to -180 max. AVOID, and look to the line.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The TIMBERWOLVES (-3.5, -106) are a bit of a risky play, as they’re just 5-15-1 against the spread in the past 21 as a favorite. They’re also 1-5-1 ATS in the past seven in the second end of a home-and-home. That’s the bad news. The good news is that Bulls (+3.5, -115) are 2-7 ATS in their past nine meetings with the Wolves, and 0-5 ATS in the past five trips to the Twin Cities.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 229.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play, as neither of these pay very much attention to defense. The Over has hit in five of the past six meetings, while going 4-1 in the past five battles at Target Center. The Over is also 11-3 in the past 14 overall for Chicago, and 10-2 in their past 12 as a ‘dog while going a perfect 7-0 in their past seven on the road. The Over is also 6-1 in the past seven for the T’Wolves, too.

Watch: Andrew Wiggins reacts on social media to being traded to the Bay Area

Andrew Wiggins used his Instagram account to react to being traded to the Golden State Warriors.

Unlike trade deadlines of the past, the 2020 edition was a whirlwind for the Golden State Warriors.

Starting with a deal that sent Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks following to a trade that moved both Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III to the Philadelphia 76ers, calling the Warriors active at the trade deadline would be an understatement.

The Warriors capped off their busy week of moves with a blockbuster trade on deadline day. Golden State moved 23-year-old guard, D’Angelo Russell, to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans III in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and draft pick compensation.

The Warriors will receive a 2021 protected first-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick along with the 2015 Rookie of the Year.

With the news of the Minnesota-Golden State blockbuster deal rippling through the NBA, Wiggins went to Instagram to react to a trade that involved him moving to a new city.

(NSFW language in attached video)

Wiggins, born in Canada, used a previous Instagram story of Canadian music star, Drake where the singer references the “Yay Area” — slang for the former Kansas Jayhawk’s new home.

Wiggins could make his Bay Area debut on Saturday when the Warriors return from a five-game east coast road trip to host the Los Angeles Lakers in San Francisco.
