The Gators are supposed to take on the LSU Tigers at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday, but following a slew of positive test results on the team, that game currently hangs in the balance.
The program reported five new positive cases from the last week, updated as of Monday. However, Payton Titus of The Independent Florida Alligator reported Tuesday that the actual number of positive tests on the team was 19.
That report was later confirmed by multiple outlets.
Then, on Wednesday, The Athletic reported that 29 players for the Gators are currently unavailable, with 19 being positive tests and an additional 10 facing mandatory quarantine for exposure.
With most of those 29 players reportedly being on scholarship, UF is dangerously close to being below the 53 minimum available scholarship players required to play.
In addition to having 53 scholarship players available, teams must have at least seven offensive linemen, one quarterback and four defensive linemen, and according to The Athletic, Florida is struggling to meet at least one of those criteria.
The school suspended team activities on Tuesday, and practicing Wednesday will be critical if the game is to happen this week. Should the team have to extend its activities suspension until Thursday, it would not be a good sign for Saturday’s game.
Mullen says deadline could be today for deciding whether #Gators game vs. LSU occurs this week. After missing Tuesday's practice, it seems imperative Florida is able to practice Wednesday.
