Twitter reacts to Theo Pinson all-time starting five of UNC players

Twitter reacts to Theo Pinson, Justin Jackson and Kenny Williams’ all-time starting five of UNC players.

Tar Heel fan favorite [autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag] caused quite a stir on social media Wednesday night after a snippet of a “Tidal League” episode revealed his UNC all-time starting five.

Pinson was joined by former UNC players, Justin Jackson and Kenny Williams, and the Tar Heel trio drafted who they believed belonged on the all-time starting five list. Michael Jordan was drafted first by Theo, Vince Carter went second to Jackson and Antawn Jamison went third to Williams. Each player had a different starting five with a unique spin on their reasons.

Pinson went with Joel Berry, Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Tyler Hansbrough and Brendan Haywood.

Jackson went with Raymond Felton, Marcus Paige, Vince Carter, Marvin Williams and Sean May.

Williams went with Ty Lawson, Rashad McCants, Rasheed Wallace, Antawn Jamison and Jerry Stackhouse.

The snippet caught traction, reaching 99K views as fans reacted to the discussion. There were some notable names missing, but it is understandable when you think about all the greats that have rocked Carolina blue.

Let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the Tar Heel trio’s all-time starting five.

Theo Pinson records triple double in 2022-23 season finale

Former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson recorded a triple-double in his first career start for the Dallas Mavericks.

The 2022-23 NBA regular season has come to an end as the playoffs are officially set beginning with the play-in tournament and then the first round.

For one former North Carolina standout, he had the opportunity to earn a start and extra playing time on Sunday. And he took advantage of that opportunity.

Forward Theo Pinson recorded his first career NBA triple-double on Sunday as the Dallas Mavericks fell to the San Antonio Spurs 138-117. Pinson finished the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, a steal and 0 turnovers.

Pinson also became the first Mavericks player not named Luka Donic to have a 20/12/12 triple-double since 1999.

What may have been more impressive is that Pinson had a triple-double after three-quarters of play and added to his line the rest of the way.

Pinson got his first career start on Sunday after the Mavericks were eliminated from postseason play with a loss to the Chicago Bulls on Friday night. With the Mavericks not making the playoffs, this was a chance to see what they had on the roster with a few players. And Pinson certainly delivered in a big way.

Dillon Brooks takes a shot at Theo Pinson

Former UNC basketball forward Theo Pinson responded to Dillon Brooks’ comments about him being a cheerleader on the bench.

The Memphis Grizzles have gone from a team that was easy to root for in the Western Conference to one that everyone is getting tired of outside of the city of Memphis. Dillon Brooks continues to be one of the centerpieces of that.

Last week, Brooks scuffled with Draymond Green about something that was said on a podcast. Now, he’s taking a shot at a former UNC basketball standout.

After Memphis’ comeback win over Dallas on Monday, Brooks took a shot at Theo Pinson, calling him a cheerleader for his antics on bench. Here is what Brooks said via Drew Hill:

“I just wanted to let him know he was a cheerleader. Same class, I grew up watching him play and he was a great player. Now he gets paid to cheerlead. I love it.”

Brooks did a pom-pom gesture at Pinson after a dunk in the third quarter, signaling that he thinks the Mavericks reserve is a cheerleader. He was unhappy that Pinson was standing up, referring to the NBA’s bench decorum rules.

But Pinson fired back at Brooks on Twitter saying that he owns real estate now.

We should also note Pinson was a key factor in the Tar Heels run to a national championship in 2017, when they beat Oregon in the Final Four.

In that game, Brooks shot 2-of-11 from the field and had 10 points in the losing effort. He watched Pinson and his teammates celebrate a title game berth.

As you know, we side with Pinson in this situation.

The NBA’s ‘Theo Pinson rule’ over bench players standing, explained

Everything you need to know about the Theo Pinson rule that’s being enforced in 2022-23.

It’s extremely rare to see a rule change or a point of emphasis named after an NBA player. It’s even rarer to see that happen with a player who isn’t an All-Star.

But here we are. The NBA’s new Theo Pinson rule is in full effect.

The Mavs’ guard has been solidified forever in NBA history. Not as a player who had a particularly spectacular moment on the court, but as the martyr who caused the league to take bench decorum more seriously than it probably should.

That’s a totally bizarre position to be in, but it’s also accurate. Let me explain.

Watch: Theo Pinson says D’Angelo Russell was going to commit to UNC

Former UNC basketball wing Theo Pinson describes the moment he found out D’Angelo Russell was about to commit to North Carolina.

The UNC basketball 2014 recruiting class has already gone down to be one of the best in not only recent memory, but also in the entire program’s history. Not just due to on the court success, but also to what that class meant to the program as the university was going through the NCAA investigation.

The three-man class of Justin Jackson, Joel Berry and [autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag] played big roles from their first year all the way through their final season at UNC and helped bring home the 2017 National Championship — after playing big roles on the 2016 National Runner-Up team as well.

But, there is a chance it may not have happened. According to a recent interview with Theo Pinson, he mentioned that former Ohio State star guard D’Angelo Russell almost took Pinson’s spot in that class.

He mentioned how the Tar Heels had one scholarship left and was going to commit before Pinson.

“I don’t know how I found out, but somehow, somebody told me D’Angelo Russell was about to commit to Carolina,” Pinson said. “There was one scholarship left and I knew he was about to take it, and then I was like, ‘you know what, I’m about to do it’.”

In the instagram comments, Russell added ‘lol that’s a fact.’

Russell was the No. 16 overall player in the 2014 recruiting class and the No. 5 shooting guard in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Russell chose Ohio State over Louisville, Michigan State and North Carolina.

The 6-foot-5 guard went on to star with the Buckeyes, averaging 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He was a consensus All-American, and All-Big Ten performer in his lone season with Ohio State.

Theo Pinson re-signs with Dallas Mavericks

Former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson is re-signing with the Dallas Mavericks here in free agency.

Former UNC basketball standout [autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag] is staying put in Dallas.

The forward is returning to the Mavericks on a one-year deal per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Pinson entered this offseason as a free agent but struck a deal to stay in Dallas for another season.

The 26-year-old Pinson played 19 games for the Mavericks last season, averaging 2.5 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. He was signed on a 10-day contract with the Mavs dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak and then earned a two-way contract for the remainder of the season.

While Pinson hasn’t become a key figure in their rotation, he’s crucial for team chemistry, something the team values.

The Mavericks are fresh off a run to the Western Conference Finals a year ago where they fell to the eventual NBA champion Golden State Warriors.

Former UNC wing Theo Pinson expected to re-sign with Mavericks

Former UNC basketball wing Theo Pinson is expected to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks and be on its 15-man NBA roster this coming season.

A week ahead of the NBA Draft and in the midst of offseason trades and contract talks, one former UNC wing is expected to return to his current team.

[autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag], who was a reserve for the Dallas Mavericks this past season, is ‘strongly expected’ to stay in Dallas next season, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.

The Mavericks announced yesterday that it had agreed to a trade for versatile forward Christian Wood and part of that trade was sending Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke and Marquese Chriss to the Houston Rockets.

With three extra players involved in the trade, it obviously cleared up roster room for the Mavericks.

Pinson played in 19 games with Dallas this past season, averaging 2.5 points per game. In his NBA career, he has played four seasons and appeared in 87 games for three different organizations.

The Mavericks brought Pinson in on a 10-day contract earlier this season as the team was dealing with a COVID outbreak on their roster.

Player with four or less years in the NBA are the players eligible for two-way contracts, thus bringing Pinson back would mean a spot on their 15-man roster.

Pinson played critical roles on every team during his four years for UNC. His Swiss-army knife skillset was extremely valuable for the Tar Heels in the 122 games he played in. Despite battling injuries throughout his career, he averaged 6.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 21.7 minutes a game during his time at North Carolina.

Theo Pinson responds to t-shirt controversy by calling out other NBA teams on Twitter

This is getting funny.

Theo Pinson has stirred up quite the funny controversy in the NBA playoffs, although it’s cost the Dallas Mavericks some money.

As you might have seen, Pinson wore a white shirt while sitting — well, at one point he was standing and holding his arm up and Steph Curry hit him with a pass, perhaps thinking Pinson was a Golden State Warrior — on the Mavs’ bench in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. The NBA fined the Mavericks for violations of bench decorum, which may have included that play.

But in Game 3, a mic’d up referee asked Pinson to change his white shirt … and Pinson did not.

And now, Pinson’s brought up the issue with other teams’ bench attire on Twitter since then:

A mic’d up ref asked Mavericks’ Theo Pinson to change his shirt before Game 3 and he refused

This is hilarious

The Dallas Mavericks’ bench has spent some of the NBA postseason violating a bunch of decorum rules, and the league has responded by fining the heck out of them.

Part of the problem? Theo Pinson’s shirt.

From USA TODAY Sports: “The final item – distracting opponents in an unsportsmanlike manner during game action – came into play in Game 2 when Steph Curry, with the Warriors wearing white uniforms, threw the ball to Theo Pinson, who was not in uniform but wearing a white sweater with his left arm raised. Curry clearly thought it was a Warriors teammate.”

Before Game 3, a referee asked Pinson to take his white shirt off, because the Dubs were wearing white.

But he refused:

LOOK: Hubert Davis in Dallas to watch former Tar Heels

UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis was in Dallas to watch the Suns-Mavericks and met up with former players before the game.

The Western Conference playoff series between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns shifted to Texas for Game 3 on Friday night, and before the Mavericks cut the series lead to 2-1, a few former UNC basketball standouts met with a special guest.

UNC basketball head coach [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag] was in town to watch the game and met with [autotag]Cameron Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag] and [autotag]Reggie Bullock[/autotag] before the game. Davis made the trip down to Dallas to see a few former Tar Heels battle in a key game for the series. Check out the photo they took ahead of the game below:

Bullock came up big for the Mavericks in the win, scoring 15 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in 41 minutes. He also continued to play stellar defense in the series.

Johnson scored just 6 points in the loss while Pinson did not play.
