Instant analysis and grade for Titans selecting DB Theo Jackson

Shaun Calderon breaks down the Titans’ second-to-last pick of the 2022 NFL draft, DB Theo Jackson.

The Tennessee Titans’ draft weekend is finally drawing to a close as they make the first of their final two selections, both of which came in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

With the No. 204 pick, the Titans selected a local product, Tennessee defensive back, Theo Jackson.

Jackson is a productive defensive back who earned All-SEC honors in his final season by both the coaches (Second-Team), and Phil Steele (Third-Team).

The Tennessee product also set career-highs in 2021 with 78 tackles (fourth-most on the team), nine tackles for loss (led SEC defensive backs), 1.5 sacks, 12 pass break-ups (second-most in SEC) and one interception (returned for touchdown).

In total, Jackson played in 56 games (24 starts) and tallied 190 career tackles, 20 passes defended, 12 tackles for loss, three interceptions (one pick-six), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

The Titans’ new defensive back, who can play safety and out of the slot, will likely need to contribute on special teams if he’s going to find his way on the field in the near future, but I like the overall idea of getting another young safety to develop under Amani Hooker and Kevin Byard.

And that’s especially with Hooker’s unknown future beyond this year as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. If Jackson shows enough promise as a rookie, it could make that decision much easier in 2023.

Overall, I like the addition of another young safety and Jackson has enough potential to warrant at least an above-average grade at this point of the draft.

Grade: B

In all, the Titans made nine picks throughout the course of the three-day event, and Campbell and Jackson were two of three defensive players taken in total.

Theo Jackson discusses preparing for Music City Bowl

Theo Jackson discusses preparing for the Music City Bowl against Purdue.

Tennessee will conclude its 2021 season Thursday against Purdue in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl.

The contest will take place at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Ahead of the matchup, senior defensive back Theo Jackson met with media and discussed playing in the Music City Bowl.

Below is a transcript of Jackson’s media availability provided by the University of Tennessee.

On Purdue’s pass-heavy approach and potentially seeing reserves play in the secondary

“I feel like from all the snaps that we’ve taken in recent games, we’re good. But if we do need to go deeper in the depth chart, we will. With how our bodies feel and the things they do, that we’ll be fine.”

On experiencing a bowl game in his hometown

“It’s always a positive to go home, but just doing it with the guys who I had started with, it kinds of means a little bit more to do it here with them.”

On younger cornerbacks seeing extra time in bowl prep
“They’re preparing well. They’re getting extra reps and learning about Purdue’s offense. They’re taking it in well, and I feel like they’re going to play well too.”

On younger DBs stepping up when their name is called

“That’s a big thing that we’ve kind of harped on all year, just to have no drop-off at all. If somebody goes down, then the next person comes in and they know what to do, how to do it, so it’s really easy for when we do have to come out. We don’t have any nervousness of who’s in the game. We don’t have to change up the play calling or anything like that, so it’s just nice to have that feeling.”

On finishing the bowl game

“We just treat it like another game. Going in, we understand what kind of game this is, but we’re just treating it like any other game. Go in, and have the mentality to win.”

“Ever since we’ve gotten here and been on the field, those guys have been taking reps at the return spot. They’re extremely natural catching the ball, tracking the football. They’re really good decision-makers on those in-between balls — do I get it or do I pull off of it.”

Jackson is accompanied by strong safety Trevon Flowers and free safety Jaylen McCollough this season in the defensive backfield.

The in-state senior met with media during Tennessee’s third week of fall training camp and discussed the safety position and how comfortable he is playing alongside Flowers and McCollough in Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley’s defensive system.

“I feel very comfortable, same as they feel,” Jackson said on a Zoom call. “Us three, especially, are very close because we play the same positions — we play left and right safety.

“I feel with us three being close and being the quarterbacks of the defense, we are really good. All three of us are really close to Coach Ansley, so he guides us through it when we have trouble.”

Jackson also mentioned he feels that the defensive backs “will be a strength of the team” due to experience.

“I feel like we will be a strength of the team because we have the most experience in the back end,” Jackson said of the defensive back unit. “Most of us have been playing since freshman year and we’ve all built up that camaraderie together.

“I just feel like with us being that close and listening to Coach Ansley, we can be a really good defensive backs unit.”
