The landscape of elite quarterbacks has changed in the NFL, and young stars such as Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes are the flag bearers. Mahomes shared his thoughts on the rival quarterbacks, and the impact each player has had on the racial stereotype of the position.

Mahomes was very candid in his response to questions regarding race during his discussion on HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted” last Saturday night. Co-Executive Producer Maverick Carter posed questions about possibly feeling the pressure as a successful black quarterback.

“I didn’t feel any added pressure until this year,” said Mahomes. “I don’t know what it was about this year. It could’ve been Lamar [Jackson], Deshaun [Waston] and how we kind of elevated our game — we were doing our thing. But growing up, my dad played baseball, and there’s every race there. So I didn’t know any different I was just going, ‘The best player played.’ That’s how it was, so I didn’t even watch football like that.

“I think this year seeing how much it meant for us to do this, we can be at the top of the league, and it wasn’t just running; it wasn’t just scrambling and doing all that different stuff we were mentally just dominating the game.”

Mahomes was league MVP in 2018, while Jackson followed by winning the award last season. Watson helped lead the Texans to a division title and playoff win before falling to the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes would go on to discuss understanding the impact of being a successful black quarterback in the NFL.

“I think I started realizing it after I played either Deshaun or Lamar and they had the little special on Sports Center,” said Mahomes. “I could see how much it was impacting, not only me, but the kids below me. And the guys that came before me like Doug Williams and all these guys, I knew their stories. It hadn’t impacted me as much as it did until I realized I could not be where I’m at if it wasn’t for guys like that before me laying the foundation for me to come out and play.”

Mahomes continues to lead the charge in changing the face of the position moving forward. His exciting and efficient style of play impacts all cultures and opens the door for more diverse opportunities throughout the league.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes aspires to be on Andy Reid’s level

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made sure to show some love to his head coach Andy Reid for his immediate success in the league.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the center of attention during his appearance on the HBO, and LeBron James produced show “The Shop: Uninterrupted.” Last Saturday night, the reigning Super Bowl MVP made sure to show some love to his head coach Andy Reid for his immediate success in the league.

After receiving compliments from fellow panelists, Mahomes quickly redirected his praise to Reid, who finally won his first championship as an NFL head coach with Super Bowl LIV. When asked about the memorable trick play, Mahomes credited Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for implementing the Rose Bowl play from 70 years ago in training camp.

The 2018 league MVP dug a little deeper with his gratitude for Reid by recalling a past game.

”I want to get to the level coach Reid is at,” said Mahomes as he began to break down his new goals in the league. ”We played the Denver Broncos in the snow, and we had moved the ball well. In the red zone, they played zone coverage every single time, every single play. And so I wanted to call a different play, and coach Reid called a man beater. He said ‘I want to call this man beater right now.’ I’m looking at coach like, what are we doing?

“We get out there and those dudes are playing man coverage. Touchdown. He knew. I want to be on that level where I can think ahead.”

Mahomes’ appearance didn’t disappoint at all as he gave fans a deeper understanding of his motivation. The show displayed a raw version of his view on his career so far and, more importantly, the expectations he still has for himself in the future.

Patrick Mahomes reveals he recently learned to read NFL defenses

Patrick Mahomes is a featured guest on Saturday night’s episode of the HBO show “The Shop: Uninterrupted” hosted by executive producer LeBron James.

The offseason is in full swing for Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes as he’s continued to make the media rounds following Super Bowl LIV. Mahomes is a featured guest on Saturday night’s episode of the HBO show “The Shop: Uninterrupted” hosted by executive producer LeBron James.

In this week’s episode preview Mahomes reveals what he picked up along the way to winning the Super Bowl last month.

”I started playing quarterback junior year of high school, until now, which is like six years,” said Mahomes. ”I was playing safety and a little bit of quarterback. I didn’t understand how to read defenses until halfway through last year. I understood coverage, but having to be able to pick up little tendencies defenses do something like Brady and them have done. I was just playing.”

Mahomes has already won both a league and Super Bowl MVP in his short three-year career. The admission to only now understanding defenses is a terrifying thought for opposing teams looking to stop the Chiefs offense.

”This year I could actually recognize more and more stuff, and I think the more experience,” said Mahomes. “and the more I learn, then I’ll be able to go out there and call plays and do that different stuff because I’ve seen it. I still think there’s a long way for me to go there and that’s where mentally I feel like I could get better, physically I’ve done a lot of stuff I always work on the fundamentals and doing that stuff, I think mentally I could take my game to a whole another level.”

Mahomes and James were joined in the discussion by co-executive producer Maverick Carter, Chadwick Boseman, Trae Young, Roddy Ricch, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Stoute, and Paul Rivera. Interesting to see what else Mahomes will reveal on this Saturday night’s full episode.
